Perhaps we should take 2 days London with an excursion trip to IOW, using some Digesters their car (the L42 convoy!). (I can only take 1 levelhead with my car, due to its structure :-) I need to get a visum for England though, since I'm almost all Luxembourger now (...) And great idea of the pictures... maybe another addition to the CDROM project, but only if the person agrees he should be included or not. I do really prefer 'action shots' (like the ones featuring on the existing levelfest pages) than dull passport photographs. Anyone with comments on the L42 MPEG3 12 hour Live disc??? To Dr. Dre: I'll send you a map of Lux for our (HLLF) highlandslevelfest Message to levelheadz John Mawer & Troels Dahl... I'll be thinking a lot of you guys this weekend ;-) And to Mike Petty: I haven't forgotten you To WinMan42 : sorry for the delay, but it will be even better (...) To ERiC: backtrack the mix(es) feedback, man! (whatyathink of Michelle Weeks anyway?) And whoever it was that boo'ed, take him out and shoot him... :-) gotta go d!Rk "Well Gary, if he hasn't phoned you yet I'm sure he will do shortly..." (Now, do I have any normal pictures is a question...) Some of you have already met in person, but the rest is a mystery to the masses... Let's get a visual of this World Machine..... CDNow...Surprised to hear a problem..They have been good to me and many others.... Avoid CDEurope like a new BeeGees album though... Wish me luck folks...I'm trying to quit my job today in North Carolina for a better job in NJ that I have already accepted. I'm trying to do it in person but may just drop off a formal letter early today... "I find myself outside your door, trying to make things like before.." Paul ------------------------------ Subject: New Music From: "Norton, Geoffrey D.,,DMDCWEST" Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 11:48:00 -0400 What's up Levelheads!!!! It's Friday, June 20th, 1997. I'm a very short flight from Las Vegas here in Northern California and can't go to Levelfest!!!! Anyway, I hope all of you that are going have a ball and take lot's of pictures! Hope to hear all about it on the digest. Just wanted to suggest grabbing some new music that's out. It's from an artist that Level toured with back in '86. Or was it '85? Anyway, Steve Winwood's new album "Junction Seven" smokes!!!! From the opening cut "Spy in the House of Love" (no it's not a remake of the Was not Was hit. It's an original penned by Steve, Narada Michael Walden and Jim Capaldi) to the summer sound of "Plenty Lovin'" (a duet with Des'ree), the whole album kicks! He also does a great version of the Sly Stone classic, "Family Affair." Living in and around Oakland, Ca. for a large part of my life, I was especially glad to hear Steve's version of a classic from one of Oaktown's all-time favorite hometown bands. Wonder if Steve will do a cover of a Tower of Power cut in the future? I'd love to hear it. Trust me on this one. You definitely want this CD. TCOY everybody. Talk to you soon! What is Strategy? Is it available in England? Is it official? My vote is London - I know London well enough to get around anyway and the places Not to go. I would be happy to help if I can. Dave. ------------------------------ Subject: Mondo "Hot Water," etc. From: Dave Mock Organization: Long Island Community Newspapers Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 13:34:28 -0400 Hey, Micro-Kids: A little experiment I tried last night: We know that "Hot Water" from "True Colours" was also remixed for the start of side two of "World Machine" in the US. Do you notice that it's also in a slightly different pitch than the original? I dubbed portions from both versions on a cassette tape, using the same tape recorder, in a sequence so it would sound like one song. (Since I'm in radio, I have a good ear for editing on a beat, even when I'm only using a pause button instead of a computer workstation -- or editing tape and a china marker.) It turns out the version of "Hot Water" from "WM" comes out in the key of F, while the version from "True Colours" sounds closer to E, and slightly slower. Someone help me out - was it just a bad dub job or an overt decision by Polydor to sweeten the song? I notice that they didn't do the same thing with "The Chant Has Begun," which was included on both albums. The song is at the same pitch on both collections. The most glaring example of this is the difference in pitch between the album and single versions of "Tracie" from "Staring At the Sun." Mark's vox on the single are different, too. Why wouldn't they just edit it at the same pitch. If the song rules or reeks, let it do so on its own merits rather than slightly changing the key. Radio stations will do so anyway -- remember WPLJ when Larry Berger was programme director? -- but it's galling as hell if a fan has to hear that, especially if he/she is a musician and has absolute pitch. (BTW -- I also hate it when an artist like Phil Collins does a live version of a song at a slightly lower key, to compensate for the fact that he can't hit the high notes. Fraud-o-rama.) Other notes: Please let me know the web address again where I can see photos of some of our correspondents? I think Winston or someone else mentioned it a couple of issues ago. Nice to read yesterday that Hall and Oates are getting back in the studio. I'm surprised that Daryl's solo album, which I picked up last October at the duo's WPLJ concert (Nassau Coliseum), hasn't come out stateside yet. It was doing well in Japan. Maybe this time, his vocals and songs will be forceful instead of cute. His last two solo albums (the unreleased one and "Soul Alone") were full of the kind of stuff he and John should have been recording for their 1988 and 1990 albums. TCOY, Dave (The Duke) Mock P.S. I'd love to hear H&O cover the song "Running In the Family" in the style of "Private Eyes." The beat is almost the same. I can also imagine Daryl playing the bassline on piano, as he did for "Private Eyes." ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #168 From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 15:08:32 -0400 (EDT) Lolita writes... > Florida - I have to discourage this idea for a number of reasons: 1)It > is too family oriented, and most of us will be single without children. > I go to Orlando quite often (I was born 20 minutes away, my family lives > there and I also go for work) and believe me when I tell you that Mickey > Mouse and his friends are absolutely shoved down your throat. Bitter about living in the tourist-infested, warped reality of the world's number one vacation spot, Lolita? Great advocate for Der Maus that I am, I can't blame you. And I definitely agree with your point about the summer: if the Fest must be in summertime, fahget about FL! If it can be held before Memorial Day, however, Central Florida is the most entertaining (and affordable) party place I know of, with simply TOO many choices of things to do. Enjoy Vegas, 'Heads!!! No need to choose between the two, there are trains. While I didn't ferry over to the Isle of Wight, I did see it from Portsmouth on the mainland side when my boat pulled in there (1979, back in my Navy days). I took a train to London for a day, about a two-hour ride. It was a scenic trip, but the seats on those British trains were hard plastic, like theme-park rides - not very comfortable. On the trip back, a guy about my age (19) got on with a Fender Jazz copy. I can only wonder.... > Apearantly one of Marks Alebic basses is for sale at the 'Bass Centre' > in London - Wapping High Street - I dont know the trueness of the > allegations. Why would he want to sell ? If you heard this as a rumor, Dave, it's more likely an Alembic 'Mark King Signature Model' rather than actually one of his basses. Although he's reported to own around a dozen Alembics and might want to unload a couple, he'd more likely donate them to charity auction than sell them in a consignment shop.
