Hey, this might be fun! 30 of us raiding a second hand music shop. We might give the owner a heart attack if we all come in together... Think about it : 30 bewildered, crazy, out-for-a-bargain, looking for everything our hero's ever made, Level 42 fans in your store? Thats scary. We even might end up fighting amongst each other about a copy of Strategy for $15.... London, here we come!! Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope if you want your photo back. I'll list everyone alphabetically by last name. By the way, are people using the L42 Chat Room I made? I see hits to it, but that could be individuals checking to see if anyone's there. Maybe I should work up a calendar where people can post when they'll be there, to facilitate meeting others. Let me know what you think. For those who are new to us since I made the announcement, you can go to the chat room at http://www.pfpd.com/42chat. From: Paul Fucito Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 10:14:52 -0700 Andre: I'm not going to flame you.... I know that Wang Chung really never took off in England, while Level 42 did... In America the opposite DID happen.. As far as who the better band is... YOU KNOW I favour Level 42. I wish our ignorant radio people in the 80's (who played everything that DIDN'T chart high) would have explored Level 42 more... PAT: Your tape is almost done.... I like your 80's survey idea..You know I'll have a few songs for you... Flock Of Seagulls Update: Last album: Light At The End Of The World (1995) is already out of print. They are going to release a live album from the 1995 tour and are working on a new album, featuring some 90's takes on thier older hits. Mike Score is the only original member.... Lightning Seeds update: Last Album: Jollification (1994) is also now out of print. The new album is great and features Chris Sharrock of The Icicle Works on drums, although he has since left the band. Icicle Works Update: No new material, but in a recent radio poll of US Modern Rock / Alternative stations, Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) is considered one of the top ten most popular songs requested and aired in the format today.... If anyone else know this group please feel free to send me a > note about it. I am a fan of this group. They do have an interesting selection of musical styles, mostly on the funky side. I only have their first CD. I haven't got around to getting their second one yet. Bradford is one very diverse musician, having played with every member of his family, Bela Fleck, and even some classical music (Romances for Saxophone, I think). Do you have his second Buckshot CD? Is it like the first one? His group actually played here in Omaha Nebraska a couple of years ago but I didn't have his CD then so I didn't go. I did buy it after that and I kicked myself for not going to the concert. Oh well.... Andre writes: > Randall the 8-track.....uuuhm sorry the ATRAC defender of the galaxy > writes: Well, that's the Defender of ATRAC, but I do have to cover the galaxy to help the digitally-challenged! Off I go to save another analoged soul! (WHOOOSH!!) Speaking of which, Sony has come out with a new base MD player (MDS- JE510) whose features are virtually the same as my JE500 but the new unit is $200.00 cheaper than what I paid for my unit!! Shit!! : ( It's listed for $299.00 in the Crutchfield catalog so if anyone has ever considered one, it might be a good time to get one. Sony also has another player (MDS-JE700) which has some extra features (TWO optical digital outputs, autotext transfer from CDP-CX250 and 270...that's cool! No more manual entries...time/date stamp, Sony S-Link, etc etc etc...). Do you have these units over there Andre? > For anybody who likes lazy funk and/or Sade style of music: Buy > "Maxwell's Urban Dance Suite". Stuart Matthewman (the musical man > behind Sade) Yes! Kind of like 70's soul with a 90's feel. Excellent CD. His voice is outstanding!! I agree!! Get it! You won't be disappointed! As far as the idea of having a "picture book" of everyone, I think it would be good because I'm sure most of you, like me, have put together an image of what a particular person on the digest looks like. For example, when I first saw Eric's homepage, his picture didn't look anything like what I imagined. I always thought Eric was a thin, short-haired, athletically-built, strapping young example of masculinity. ...well, sort of.. BUT ANYWAY...Andre..I liked your pictures from the Levelfest. I think you guys need a couple of female digesters in there to break up the monotony!! :) Doesn't Lolita have a nice smile? JennCyn is the only person that looks exactly like I imagined! Hey Jenn! Have you recovered from my idea of putting Micro Kid to a Bill Gates montage yet? I tell you what. I'll send you to a special place for Mac owners and tell Bill to leave you alone, OK? I can't promise that he won't try to assimilate you. If he hands me a check for...oh...12 millions dollars...I might have to tell him where you live. Right, then! Randall "I'm French! From: L42DAD @ aol.com Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 11:46:27 -0400 (EDT) It's been quite a while since I've addressed the members of the digest. Good day eh! I have to put in my vote for the next level fest. Orlando, it doesn't have to be at Disney. Why not Universal, or Old Town, or even Medieval Times (as seen in the movie the Cable Guy). If Orlando is not your thing then it's got to be Bermuda. Turquoise blue water, traveling by scooters, friendly people, a place where people appreciate great music. Now to the news, a little bird told me there was something in the works for a new album from Hall & Oats. Whoop tie doo you may say, well the neat thing about this album is that it will be produced by Rick Astley who also recommended the artistic genius and talent from our own Mark King and Mike Lindup. They appear to be hesitant about working together again but they are currently in the negotiation process. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Everyone from the States could take Thursday night redeye flights, arrive Friday morning and hang out in London all day - do the record stores, walk around, etc. We could then hit the bars (which is an awful lot of fun) and do some clubbing. Saturday morning we could charter a bus to take us to the Isle of Wight (it is a 2 1/2 hour ride and costs around $15 roundtrip) and then hop the 15 minute ferry. We could stay on the Isle of Wight all day and overnight, and then take the bus back on Sunday morning. Anybody who needed to fly out could do so, and people who wanted to stay would be in good shape as well. This seems like a good solution since most people would have to fly in and out of Heathrow anyway. The Europeans could simply fly in sometime Friday and join everyone. Does this sound like a good idea? Since a lot of us will be in Vegas the next few days, I won't see your responses until Monday morning, so don't think I'm 'igging' you by not replying. Later y'all! Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Cheap Basses From: N Collier Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 21:06:54 +0100 I'm green with envy about the Vegas LevelFest. I really wish I could make it there. I vote we all make a Level 42 lottery pact - if any of us wins big on the lottery we pay for Level 42 to get back together for a one-off concert free to anyone who can make it there. I've been checking out basses in yown recently as I'm in the market for a new one. I'm absolutely amazed just how fantastic relatively cheap basses sound. I tried, amongst others, a Westfield for 250 pounds and an absolutely amazing Aria Pro IGB for 300 - I also had a go on a Status and couldn't tell the difference in sound quality between any of them (bar the the Fender Jazz which was absolutely atrocious). I'll probably go for the Aria with the gorgeous hardwood body. Why do so many cheaper basses sound so good these days? More advanced and cheaper components? Increased competition? Or were my ears deceiving me? Can any other Brits suggest good, inexpensive basses to try out (Jason, what's York like for music shops?) Incidentally, the blokes in the guitar shop seemed impressed/confused by my slapping - don't think they've seen much of it before and they didn't know quite what to make of it. I know there are hundreds > of digesters but I'm sure we could accommodate. Just an idea. I second this proposal. I am prepared to set up the Member Page. Would it be an idea to install the files on the worldmachine server of Eric (How about that Eric?). Then it would be easy to remember the URL of the Member Page. Something like www.worldmachine.com/level42/hall-of-fame. Just an idea. I could also put them on my own homepage off course, but it would be nice if we could keep Level-related things centralized. To set it up I would need your pictures though. These could be sent to me by email if you've already scanned them, or by snail-mail to my home-address in The Netherlands where I will scan them personally. If they are to be sent by email, please reduce the picture to a reasonable size. First of all because it won't take me too long to download the files from my mailserver, secondly the loading time of the Memberpage should be acceptable. Another possibility would be off course to get a number of people to work on developing the HTML files and then send them to a central point/person who installs it on his/her website. We could already start thinking about a name for the page. What about: - Levelheads Memberpage; - Levelheads Hall Of Fame; - Digest's Finest; - ........; - ......; Reactions????? See you later......... Daniel ========================================= Daniel Venema http://www.noord.bart.nl/~mggroote/dvenema dvenema @ poboxes.com ========================================= [Here's an interesting idea... I would be willing to collect small graphics from anyone who wants to participate, and then put them up on the Digest homepage near the section that already lists member homepages. Even better, I can insert the photos at the beginning of messages that show up on the Digest archives. For example, if you were to go to the homepage and pull up this Digest mailing, you'd (potentially) see small graphics of Walter, Pat, Paul, Randall, Lolita, Nigel, etc. at the beginning of their respective messages. Once you send me your photo (via email... after scanning), you'd be "in the database", and your email address will always be mapped to your graphic. A lot of you probably already know anyway - Tell me if you do. I think that Stanley Clark is a definate. Also, is Marks Solo 'Influences' available on CD anywhere? Our local record shop employees look at me as though I have leprosy when I ask. Either my complexion IS very bad or they simply dont know what I'm talking about. Indeed a few haven't even heard of Level 42! When I mentioned it they said they only have a basement and a first floor. Apearantly one of Marks Alebic basses is for sale at the 'Bass Centre' in London - Wapping High Street - I dont know the trueness of the allegations. Why would he want to sell ? Anyway I am on Holiday at the minute and the weather is miserable here. It is England after all. William Hague has been elected the Conservative Leader. Boring! I saw Jim Careys 'Liar Liar' today very good - It had bit more substance than normal - Any suggestions on what to look out for from the US? Cheers Dave ------------------------------ Subject: CDNow...or EVER? From: Roxanne Moore Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 17:13:02 -0700 Hi levelz- Don't get me wrong, CDNow, the on-line CD store, which I'm sure most of you are familiar with is great, BUT, if your a US fan, and you want a L42 CD, you just might be better off flying to London to get it. I have a tape someone made for me of "Standing In The Light", well, since I want the hard copy instead for my "files" I ordered from "CDNow" the SITL CD. I've gotten numerous tales of "it's an import, it'll take a bit longer", to "not to worry, your cd is on it's way...", to "we apologize, and we will be sending you a coupon for your next order with us." Hmmmmm, that's a great concept, if my first order ever gets here, and assuming I ever go with CDNow again. My point is, (yes, there actually is one) that a trip to England would be perfect for me, because then I could absolutely raid every last darn Record store in London, and then stop by Wales and ask Mark for a few unreleased recordings. (ok, I like to dream alright?) Anyhow, before you make that on-line purchase for a CD you really want "now", I'm afraid the name may be misleading. Their customer service is outstanding. BUT I WANT MY SITL CD!!! Thanks for your understanding friends- Roxanne N. Moore ------------------------------ Subject: David Gray, PLEASE CLARIFY... I can't envisage it somehow... Are you saying that MARK KING might be at this trade fair - accessible to some of us (well, those of us in the UK, of course) who might show up to say hello and let him know his fans are alive and well here on the 'net???
