I'm off to Ireland on Tuesday, so I thought I'd just say goodbye. And whilst you all do the Levelfests on the 21st June, please think of me and Wendy as we get married. Getting to the IOW is relatively much more > expensive I guess.... Totaly agree, London is THE place to be. Lot's of music stores where we can hang out and find L42 stuff. You have my support. Go for it! It would be nice to do such a thing in the autumn, when all tourists have gone, and hotels are cheaper. CU Walter ------------------------------ Subject: Reason defeats Wang-King!!! From: John Shuford Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 08:54:09 -0700 Fun though it may be, Wank-King is an unproductive pasttime and is actually harmful to your mental and emotional health, as we have seen with the increased frustration experienced by many of the Digest's members. The exercise of reason will show you that Wang-King simply is not a viable alternative! This educational entry on Wang Chung (courtesty of CDNow) shows us why: "The London-based new wave group Wang Chung had a handful of hits in the mid-'80s, achieving their greatest popularity in the U.S. Originally called Huang Chung, the band consisted of VOCALIST/guitarist Jack Hues (emphasis mine), BASSIST Nick Feldman (emphasis mine), and drummer Darren Costin. The band recorded four tracks for 101 Records in the late '70s, all of which appeared on a pair of compilation albums. Huang Chung released their first single, "Isn't It About Time We Were on Television?," in 1980; the record led to a contract with Arista Records. The group released their first album, Huang Chung, in 1982. By the time they recorded 1984's Points on a Curve, the band had changed their name to Wang Chung. "Dance Hall Days" was a small hit in Britain, yet the band hit the Top 40 twice in America -- "Don't Let Go" made it to number 36, while "Dance Hall Days" reached number 16. From this point on, Wang Chung ignored the U.K. market, choosing to concentrate on the U.S. "To Live and Die in L.A.," the theme song from William Friedken's thriller, just missed making the Top 40 in 1985. That same year, Wang Chung switched from Geffen Records to A&M and Costin left the band. Hues and Feldman (ed: the VOCALIST and the BASSIST) continued as a duo and released Mosaic in 1986. The album was their biggest hit, launching the number two hit "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and the Top Ten "Let's Go!" "Wang Chung returned in 1989 with The Warmer Side of Cool, which spent a mere six weeks on the charts, spawning the minor hit, "Praying to a New God." After the relative disappointment of the album, the group quietly stopped touring and recording." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine All Music Guide So you see that Wang-King is not the solution to our Level 42 doldrums. There is no place for Mark King to be in this band, unless he were to become a drummer only. Maybe then they could go the two drummer-two guitarist-three vocalist route and ask Midge Ure and Gary Husband to join up...call themselves Ure-Wang-King-Husband. Otherwise, let's move on completely from this obsessive preoccupation with Wang-King! (Well, if it _was_ > sampled someone had to play it as well, or not ?) > > Groetjes, Andre Hi all! Well Andre, once when I met Jakko he mentioned to me that he had once played with the Pakistani singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. With this in mind, when I met him again I asked him if he had played the 'sitaar' on LIAPW. The answer was no, but we didnt go into who did play it. I would love to know too. If anyone is in touch with him, maybe they could ask? My vote for the International Levelfest? LONDON! It is so rich in Level 42 history. It is also accessible, internationalist, great bars and restaurants and it is just great fun! After all, thats where Level 42 started really. I always think of Mark selling basses and stuff when I walk past Macari's on Tottenham Crt Rd! And there are loads of record shops! Take care everyone ..not you, not me, only Elvis Presley. Bilal ------------------------------ Subject: VH-1 Pop Up Video & Level 42 From: Paul Fucito Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 21:44:08 -0700 After hearing the idea on the digest and watching the Pop Up Video fest today I noticed they have a number to call for tips and info... I say we compile enough Level 42 biographical info and do the "Something About You" video which still airs on VH-1 on occasion. Then we contact them with our proposal... Maybe they will mention us in the final blurb after the video. If anyone can do it right, it will be us... hell, if they can do "Goody Two Shoes" by Adam Ant, we can get some Level 42 in there... My sister in Boston said WBOS played Something About You again last week.. I almost worked for them too.... Paul [I heard M's "Pop Muzik" on Boston's WFNX this past Sunday... -Eric]
