Pref. From: Chuck Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 13:49:10 +0000 What Ho? Since we're talking about an International Levelfest, even though the First National Levelfest (U.S. that is) hasn't taken place yet, I'll be happy to submit my preferences (Wow! It only took us one day to narrow it down to three choices already). 1. Orlando, FL - Disney World - for selfish reasons; I live less than an hour away 2. NYC - for selfish reasons; my parents live less than an hour away 2. IoW - for sentimental reasons; obviously Ground Zero (such an ominous term, yet fitting!) I would LOVE to go there, but with a wife and two kids on the way, my level of disposable income for non-emergency funds is rapidly diminishing for to but and...how'd that go, Dave? Another good reason for Disney World: our fearless leader came up with the idea (also strongly supported by DonZ), and I live less than an hour away. To all Vegas LF participants: have a BLAST - wish I could be there :-( Orange crate mode off. Chuck (I know I put two # 2's on my list. Give me a break, my three button broke.) ------------------------------ Subject: All sorts of 'fests From: "Eric J. Hansen" Organization: Worldmachine Technologies Corporation Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 10:39:03 -0400 (EDT) Uhh, Chuck... the '#' sign that you used in the last sentence is the SHIFT-3 key... Anyways, yes, I initially suggested Disney World in Orlando, FL as a possible venue for a mega-supa-huge Levelfest adventure. My fiance and I went there for about a week this past February and had a really, really great time. There's certainly plenty to do there (enough for several solid weeks of fun and entertainment), but the cost may be prohibitive. Our 5-night stay (including hotel, bus transfer from the airport and passes to all the theme parks) was around $650 -- this did not include air fare. This was the "off peak" season, so expect to pay more between mid-February and the end of the year. So, speaking of Levelfests... it seems that there have been numerous fests so far - both in North American and in Europe. I'm wondering if there are enough folks (living near each other) in Austrailia or Asia (ok, well maybe Japan) to meet up? What about South America or Africa? Or maybe I'm just getting a bit carried away... (which is why I'm not mentioning the other two continents By the way -- I'm keeping a list of hyperlinks to Levelfest homepages on the Digest homepage: http://www.worldmachine.com/level42/#misc If you have photos or any other info about a Levelfest that you attended, please let me know so that I can link you in. I can also host a page if someone can provide me with scanned images and/or text. (I still have photos and info about the Dallas and Boston fests that I need to put up!!) Also, I had the esteemed pleasure of talking to a Mr. DirKEEES Vael on the phone yesterday, and we tossed around the idea of planning an international fest somewhere in Europe. Either way (and given advance notice), I'll try to make it -- I'm sorry that I can't be at the Vegas event!! It was just adding up to be too expensive (given three other weddings that I attended this month -- all of which have incurred air, hotel and rental car!) Oh, and speaking of phone calls, I also spoke with Mike Payne the other day! Mike has successfully relocated from Oklahoma to Dallas, TX. He doesn't have email access yet, but expects to be back online when he starts his new job during the next month. Looks like we'll be planning another Dallas Levelfest sometime this year! -Eric -- Eric J. Sounds like a ball, as I've only been to London once, but that was with my girlfriend at the time, and we were fighting our way thru Euope. Needless to say, it was not the best way to see the country!! Heck, anyplace overseas is cool with me. Lolita and I have spoken a few times about hosting one here in NY, but this city, as great as it is, is too #%#^ expensive!! You could spend more for a hotel for 2 nites, than you would for airfare to most destinations. Katie, I will bring my copy of 'The White Funky; to Vegas for you to check out. My version has the hideous brick wall artwork. Didn't someone tell me that their version has a different cover? Oh yeah, I have that Cobham CD, Ithink. I love 'Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron. Dave Mock, sure I'd love to hang in the city. Let me know when. I'm doing the family BBQ on the 4th but should be free before and after. Maybe we can get BOB C to come down, as we have been trying to coordinate our schedules for the last 2 months! Later, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Bass guitar strings From: "MNR. I would like to know just one more thing: while looking for a suitable bass guitar, I would like to start practicing on my plain guitar (the notes at least). Is there any difference in the string tuning between a plain guitar and a bass guitar? Do I need to re-tune my plain guitar's first four strings in some way? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Charl ------------------------------ Subject: Stuff From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 16:35:31 -0400 (EDT) Elson - thanks for *considering* gracing us with your presence in Vegas. Don't hurt yourself (just kidding). Paul Doody - I understand that you were defending your bro, but was your response really necessary? I personally didn't find the joke very funny, and it's not because I'm an American. People should be allowed to disagree here without personalizing it to such an extent. The one thing I liked about my recent excursion across the pond is that people didn't hold the fact that I was from the U.S. against me. This digest has no place for racism or excessive nationalism. You should have just said you disagreed with him and left it at that. Sean - The Machine Stops on MIDI? Cool - that's a great song. Andre - I'm giving your money for the hat to Winston tonight (I missed the opening of The Lost World when I was in Europe, so I'm dragging him with me to see it today!). I haven't listened to your tapes yet, but I will do so this weekend. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Hit by car From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 17:44:55 -0400 (EDT) Y'all, Do not be alarmed!!! While on a training ride a week ago, I was hit by a car. As you know, I'm a serious triathlete and take my training seriously. I sustained road rash, a severe gash on my leg and bruises. I landed on my back and butt. No head injury thank god!!! My $3000 Litespeed sustained wheel damage (both) a bent crank arm, a bent fork and possible frame damage (still checking it out). My training is shot to hell. I can't run very well due to hip/leg pain and already missed one race. I have one tomorrow that I'll just use as a training session. I hope to be able to compete at my former level soon. I just wanted everyone to know why I haven't been reading the digest on a daily basis. To D!rk!es: Did you get my letter? To W!nston: I'll try your P & P cover site again. To Kara: Have you obtained any offers yet? To Winston: I've heard that Mike Lindup and Billy Idol have already enlisted Shep Pettibone to do some remixing for the 12" material. Lastly, I noted that there is a RUSH album that has the "bolt and nut" graphic on the cover, similar to WORLD MACHINE. As WM came out first, Rush did an obvious copy. Shame on them!!! Gotta go! The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: New Level 42 Digest Member! From: "Norton, Geoffrey D.,,DMDCWEST" Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 18:52:00 -0400 What's up Levelheads!!!!! My name is Geoff Norton. I was turned on to the digest by a friend of mine at work. I got hooked on Level 42 while I was in the Air Force. I had the opportunity to be stationed in England from July '87 to September '94. I was actually still in the states when i first heard them. My supervisor at the time had just come back to the states after being stationed in the UK for four years. He had "The Early Tapes" and "The Pursuit of Accidents." "World Machine" came out soon after and I was hooked. When I finally got to the UK, I bought every Level CD I could get my hands on. I managed to catch them in concert three times over there including the January 12, 1989 "Live at Wembley" gig. My friend at work walked in my office one day and heard "You Can't Blame Louis" playing on my CD. He couldn't believe there was actually someone who knew about Level 42 here on the job!!!! I was just as surprised! I can't tell you what a fantastic, unexpected surprise it was to find out there was such a following here in the states for this incredible band. I'll be following all the news in the digest all the time!!! I hope to correspond with plenty of you fellow Levelheads out there, hopefully meet some of you in the future, and get to the international Levelfest wherever its held. My personal choice for a sight. I guess ideally it would have to be the IOW. But London would be great too. I'll go with IOW. Anything that would give me an excuse to go back to England. The UK is the BOMB!!!!!!!! I'm hoping more Levelheads turn up out here in Monterey, California and also the Bay Area. By the way, who should I contact for a copy of the AYGB CD. I'm listening to my friend's copy right now and I definitely want one. I'd appreciate anyone dropping me a line to stear me in the right direction. Thanks a lot. It's real good to know that all you Levelheads are out there. I'll be in touch. Thanks so much for getting this thing together!!!!!! ------------------------------ Subject: Wang-King From: Bruce_Conrad @ hphc.org Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 16:29:18 -0400 Winman - nice job on the 'retro' CD cover! From: Roxanne Moore Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 22:31:10 -0700 Hello fellow levelheads........ I was once a member before, but I moved, and never really got connected for about 8 months. Perhaps some of you remember me, I don't know. Anyhoo, let's see. I LOVE Level 42, of course, that's why I'm here. In the past, when I was a member, sometimes I felt a bit intimidated by the UK fans who had actually gotten to see them in concert, have every last album they made, etc. No offense you UK erz out there, if anything, I'm envioius of y;all. :) I really only started becomming a fan about 3 years ago. I remember back in the 80's when their Flagship 'Something About You' hit the charts, but unfortunatley, not a whole lot of their stuff made it to the US. I currently own the following albums: Standing In The Light The Pursuit Of Accidents World Machine MK's solo album-Influences Turn It On Guarnateed Staring @ The Sun R.I.T.F. Live @ Wembley Forever Now (the first album, w/'Tired of Waiting') The New Forever Now a proud owner of "As Years Go By" Level 42 B-Sides 1980-1994 CD, (put together by some great LevelHeads that put togehter this Digest!) AWESOME recording! And I'm still trying to collect all the other "good stuff" the band has done. For me, even though Level 42 is not the "new" and "hottest" band on the market anymore, they remain one of the very few bands I continually can listen to over and over again. They are all such strong talents on their own, and together, they were outrageous. Each of their albums has it's own style and individuality to it. Most of all, I love Mark King's bass playing style. What I wouldn't do to see him in person playing that thing. I can't beleive my ears when I hear it!!!!!!!!! Well, there's my corny little intro. It's nice to be back. Hope there's plenty of USA fans out there on the digest. TCOY- roxanne :) Roxanne N. Back in the 80's when SAY came out, it seemed it was the only song most people knew them for. I'd say "L42" and most would reply "Level who?". I wish I could say I saw them many times in concert but the truth is I saw them once in a small venue ( all original members) and twice as opening acts for Steve Winwood and Madonna. For some reason America didn't grab them like they should of so I thank all of you for bringing them back in a larger than life way! My Chant Has Begun........
