How good is your information on this? I'm not exactly an industry analyst, but I find it hard to believe. Trace has a very long list of illustrious endorsers (to wit the "Also Available in Green" compilation CD including "At This Great Distance"), and has long been considered a Mercedes amplification label. If they did close up shop, it's a damned shame, and probably isn't due to lack of demand. SWR and Eden, which are somehow connected in their histories, are both very popular for mid- to high-end bass amplification products all over the place. About Jimmy Earl: Don't like him. I think he's trying very hard to be perceived as a Patitucci clone, but he hasn't nearly the art that Patitucci has (and I don't mean on his walls). Most of his work I've heard sounds plastic and sterile. Now, on the subject of bass splayers who back up bass players, I would strongly recommend listening to recordings by Armand Sabal-Lecco. He's the guy who played that really cool bass part in Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al", and now works extensively with both John Patitucci and Stanley Clarke. You can hear several cool duets between Armand and Stanley on "East River Drive" (which, other than the last few tracks, is also a bit sterile unfortunately). Armand also plays on Patitucci's "Another World" and "Mistura Fina" discs, both of which are heavily influenced by Brazilian music. I'm not sure, but I believe that Armand may have played with Youssou N'Dour as well over the years. -- -Will "I don't name the streets, I just live on them" ------------------------------ Subject: Hats/Vegas/Cd Cover From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 08:35:22 -0400 (EDT) Thanks to Pat F's help i have updated my page with an idea for a 'Past & Presence' CD Cover. The files are smaller, and they load a lot quicker. Plus, I've updated them to reflect the new track lsiting. ** Keep in mind that this is JUST my idea, not THE cover. I'm sure some other folks may be working on their own versions, so let's see 'em!! Ann, welcome to the digest! Graphic Designer, huh? Hmmmm, maybe I can pick your brain forcover ideas? So where in the east did you go to college? Near New York by any chance? Okay Colin, here is the skinny on the Vegas Trip: June 20th - June 22nd in Sunny Las Vegas. Make you own travel, hotel arrangements. We will meet Friday evening, and take it from there. (time and place still to be decided, so watch this space for more info) Breakfast Buffet at Treasure Island on Saturday Morning at 10:00 am sharp, see the June 10th digest for info. I'l be bringingsome surprise, but we have at least 20 people coming, and should have a ball hanging in Vegas. Okay, I still haven't received all the payments for the Vegas hats. I'm still waiting for 5 more payments. So needless to say they will not be ready in time for Vegas. Sorry, I'm a bit bummed myself, but it was a last minute thing. I'll place the order this week, and keep you all posted. The company told me at least 4 weeks, so there you have it. Tcoy, Winston p.s. Just heard that Mike Lindup will be joining Billy Idol in the studio,to work on some new tracks for their duo CD. John Tesh is producing. ------------------------------ Subject: European musings, digest comments From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 09:59:13 -0400 (EDT) Hey all: I'm sitting at my desk at work, pissed that I had to return to my reality after a glorious two and a half week European vacation. I caught up on all the Digests that I missed, so I have a few comments: * All Digest members who have ever worn a daishiki in a past life and are going to Vegas must bring pictures if they possess them. * My favorite cover is also Heaven In My Hands - when I used to have the screen saver on my computer people would always comment on how pretty it was. Worst is Guaranteed, hands down. * My favorite video? I don't really have a standout because I like the live concerts so much more, but I guess I would say Children Say. Worst is a tie between Weave Your Spell (can you say, cheese?) and Take Care of Yourself. * Bruce Conrad - I can supply two tunes for the project. One is a true original where I wrote all the lyrics and music, and the other is an adaptation of a Take 6 song where I sing all the parts myself by overdubbing. It's pretty cool, as Winston will attest. * Zak - I think the other song missing off that Forever Now is Time Will Heal. * Early instrumentals by the group are my favorite songs by them. My favorite songs are Pursuit of Accidents, 43 and Return of the Handsome Rugged Man. * Whoever was interested in teaching themselves the bass, consider the size of your hands before you buy one. I didn't, and I'm sorry now. I have very small hands and I wish I had bought a short scale bass, because I have problems covering the lower frets since my pinky can't rest on the fourth one when the first three are covered. It's a problem. If you have normal sized hands don't worry about it. * Brand New Heavies - How are they with Siedah Garrett instead of N'Dea? I've seen them with N'Dea and they were really good. I missed this cool festival in London on Sunday that had them, Jamiroquai, Erykah Badu and a bunch of other similar artists. Did anybody go? * Randall, please e-mail me the Bluey Maunick interview. * Bruce Harfield - You were on the Isle of Wight all weekend and didn't meet us for our Levelfest on Saturday? We were there for four hours, for goodness sake! I'm slightly insulted. Speaking of my European excursion, I would just like to publicly thank everyone here who took time out to show me around their lovely cities. All the U.S. people should take an opportunity to visit some of our European brothers (doesn't appear to be any sisters); they are great hosts. Amsterdam - Alex Thomas was the other guest since he was in a place nearby in Germany. We settled down for a couple of Dutch beers and had lively discussion (Alex, I don't really like Tracie that much either), walked around and then went to a Mexican dinner. I was forced to eat all of my food since apparently Europeans don't believe in doggy bags. Andre, you are a gem for setting it up; Gert, I'm sorry you couldn't make it and I'll listen to your CD tonight; Bram, what does Mighty Maomoondog mean? I'll send you guys a copy of my pictures. Munich - Since Alex happened to be in town at the same time as I for the big soccer game (Germany vs. Italy) we hung out with his best friend Arne. We went to Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) beer garden in the Englischer Garten and had much fun! Alex, I have been telling everyone about the surly checkout woman and that you said she must be from East Germany. I thought that was funny. We then walked around and took a ride through Munich in Arne's car. Alex, ich bin sehr froh, weil wir kennenlernen waren. Ist dass richtig? Also, tell Arne that he was a great host and I'll definitely contact him soon. One last thing about Munich which I thought was interesting. I went to a club by myself one night, and there was a band playing Brazilian samba and bossa nova, but they were singing in German. Let me just say that Brazilian music is not meant to be sung in German and leave it at that. I have nothing against German - I happen to speak it a bit - but Brazilian music should be sung in Portuguese. That's just my opinion of course. Berlin - I didn't meet anyone there, but I'd like to comment that East German police are no joke! I took the train in and arrived at Zoo Station, and the station is patrolled by these young fierce looking policemen, practically wearing fatigues and armed with vans and these ferocious German shepherds. These guys definitely don't eat doughnuts. Paris - Morgan Roussel and Tony Bassette hooked up with me there, and we had an excellent time! Morgan, I promise to look at your website (Tony, stop laughing!). I have to take a minute here to tell the rest of the Digest about Morgan. Morgan plays bass, but he is not just a bass player. I think he is one of the most talented musicians I have ever heard in my life. He played his Alembic for well over an hour and I was completely blown away. He wasn't just mimicking Mark - he added licks that were even more intricate and very soulful. I heard something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Morgan, you told me your girlfriend left you because you play bass; well if you were dating me I would make you play until your fingers bled. You have to get me a tape of some of your stuff. At any rate, thank you guys very much for showing me an excellent time in your beautiful city. Isle of Wight - Laurel and I took the bus from London and met David Goodall, the Bone Brothers (Marcus and Simon) at Joe DaFlos. I have to say, I felt like I had reached Mecca. The place is cute and unassuming, but it was a great feeling to be there. We talked about the band of course, and basically hung out and had beers and ciders. Marcus thanks for the poster - you and your brother are a good comedy act. David, I am very appreciative of you taking your time to set it up, especially since you were moving that day. Hey everybody: We should really try to have a truly International Levelfest next year. If we give out the dates far enough in advance, people can begin to save their money for it. The guys in Europe are so cool that it's a shame that a lot of you haven't met them. I say we do it in a centrally located spot; either the East Coast of the U.S. or England(Isle of Wight?) or maybe Holland, which is fairly far west in Europe. That makes it reasonably affordable for everyone. We should start thinking about it so that we can set a date by the end of the summer. What do you guys think? The only >info given on the CD sleeve is 'taken from the 'offical bootleg' recorded >by Dave Dixon. Surely there must be a few of you who were at this show, >and can prove it by recognising your voice in the crowd! :-) Well, actually I can! When I attended the 42-show here in Gothenburg, Sweden 1 Dec 1991, we (me and a friend) were the only ones who stood up from our seats after the shows first two songs ("Her Big Day" and "The Sun Goes Down"), which led Mark King to point at us and say "How you're doing?!". Of course, I could be wrong. Koko. ------------------------------ Subject: CD-R's/Vegas/Moody From: Daniel James Organization: Mathsoft, Seattle Division Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 09:57:07 -0700 On CD-R prices... We are also able to get them for about $4.50 in quantities of 200 or more. These are the kind with a white textured label for ink jet printing (we have an ink jet printer here designed for printing onto the CD-R's themselves) so it seems that the plain-jane disks should be even cheaper... > Any other Moody Blues fans? Very much so--mostly their late 60's/early 70's stuff. They played the Gorge here a few weeks back, but I was unable to go. I've never seen them live and I'm happy to hear that they put on such a good performance. I'll definatly have to catch them the next time around. Besides, I've heard that the Gorge is one of the best outdoor places in America to see a show. > A few people have commneted that I should make the cover in color, instead > of black & white. I kinda' like the b&w scheme, because of the whole > retro thing, but I will do a color version, and see how it turns out. This was exactly my thought. I thought the lack of color enhance the effect. Excellent job Winston! Vegas... 9 days and counting. I'm sure Bill has passed on our schedule, but he and I will be pulling into Vegas on our chartered 737 at 12:35pm. This is going to be fun. 10am Breakfast sounds great to me. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com DAPD Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: 80's Sampled Music in the 90's From: Paul Fucito Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 13:05:38 -0700 I turned on MTV yesterday and there was a rap song using the guitar section from "Every Breath You Take" by the Police, we've been hearing about "Leaving Me Now" sampled in Europe, (Radiohead sampling L42 now too?)...The Prodigy and Sublime sampling The Art Of Noise (talk about irony...sampling a group built around sampling in the first place..).. Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Interstate '76 From: N Collier Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 18:07:56 +0100 Eric e-mailed me the other day telling me about the soundtrack to the new PC game 'Interstate '76'. The game is set in 70s south west America and players get to barrel around in huge 70s cars, wearing massive flares, enormous afros, bizarre facial hair and firing all manner of car-based weaponry at eachother. The game CD also comes with 16, yes 16, 70s funk tracks. These are original, new tracks and are absoluetly AMAZING - they are some of the funkiest tracks I've ever heard. I don't know who is responsible for them, some session group put together for the project I assume, but, even if you don't play the game, buy it for the music - it is worth 30 pounds of anyone's money!!!!! I checked out the Interstate 76 website (www.activision.com/games/action/i76/index.html) and it appears you can get hold of copies of the soundtrack on its own (though I doubt it comes in 8-track format as depicted on the website) as well as T-shirts and stuff (the Interstate 76 bell-bottomed trousers are sold out). "Just how funky is this game?" I hear you ask. Well, take New Jersey Kings/James Taylor Quartet, Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Bros. Johnson, P-Funk, Larry Graham...etc etc...combine them all together, feed them on funk sandwiches for over 3 weeks and you'll end up with this soundtrack!! The website gets top marks too.
