I mailed them all out from New York today, so expect them in your town within the next week. Lazlo, Carl Mueller and myself collaborated on a 12' single pictorial discography, which we put up on out web pages. (I did all the scanning, and Carl did most of the programming, and content.) I learned everything I know from him! :-) In any event, you can probably grab the pics from our pages. Some of them are on his page, some are on mine. I also have scanned all of the Pic Disc, and 7" singles that I own. Drop me a line about getting the rest. Carl: www.inland.net/~cmueller/level42.htm Winston: http://members.aol.com/winman42/12inchb.htm Pat, I'll take the jibe about 'The Chinese Way' but I must strongly disagree with you regarding 'A Kinder Eye'. That solo is killer and I bet Keith and Carl agree with me. Right guys? hello, guys? Help me out on this one..... Nigel, thanks for Part1 of your 'The produgy' summary. excuse me while I go out and hang myself. I really don't think I can handle part 2! :-) I hope this has a happy ending, maybe young Hans takes everyone out with an AK-47? That will teach them to pressure the little guy. :-) David, I've never hear of "Level Records", where the heck does this stuff come from? I do have the cd singles you speak of, even though they are in the PAL standard and I can't play them on my inferior NTSC system. Alas I do have a few in NTSC standard, like SAY, and It's Over. By the way, the video for It's over was filmed in California. Ronn, good idea on the level 42 Fans Choice Awards! Can i be a presenter? Just one problem, how come I can't vote for 'The Chinese Way'? Live & L-Best on LaserDisc From: Brian D Shepard Date: Thu, 16 Jan 1997 07:28:36 -0700 A mighty fine howdy-do to all you Levelheads out yonder, from the front range of the Rocky Mountains, which is Denver, Colorado! I'm walking on cloud-9 right now folks. After work last night I casually walked into a local record store here in Denver where they had (literally) tons and tons of new & used CD's and laserdisc's. In fact, the store was so packed full of merchandise, being the big guy that I am, I could barely walk between the aisles. As I finally made it over to the laserdisc section, I noticed a LaserDisc Music bin. Ah-hah! I began to wonder IF they could possibly have our boys in the 'L' section and .... wellah!...behold, Guaranteed Live AND Level Best! These discs were only for rental, but I wittingly convinced the owner of the store to sell them to me, telling him that "hey, no one's ever heard of Level 42. I wouldn't expect to rent them very much. Sell them to me and at least you'd make your money back". I know, I know, I lied. But, hey, at least I bought them for $20 each!!! Yes, $20 each! One problem, though folks....I don't have a LaserDisc player! How funny is that? The store does rent them for $5 per night. So it looks as if I'll be renting one and finally making some STEREO copies onto video tape! You levelheads who've been on here for the last year or so might remember someone buying a video of Guaranteed Live from Audiophile Imports and paying $40 for it. As it turned out, it was only a COPY of the said laserdisc. The quality was somewhat suspect and was not a good stereo copy of it. Well, I'm ashamed to say it, but that was me. Then upon hearing news of CD Europe, I purchased a commercial video tape [at least I thought it was] of Guaranteed Live. But as it turned out, it was also a mono video copy of the laserdisc. I think I paid another $40-$50 for it, thinking "hey, I'm getting the actual commercially released and distributed version! ... No more laserdisc copy!" I was a sucker folks! (To Keith as "Anne Painter "... sound familiar?) Well, I'll be working on this... IF I can figure out a good way to keep a laserdisc on hand for a while, I'd almost like to offer to make stereo VHS copies for anyone who doesn't have the video for Guaranteed Live and Level Best. WAIT! Don't start e-mailing me for copies yet! Like I said, I have to figure out a way that I can do this for the Digest in multiple quantities. So, if anyone has suggestions or can help me out on this, then please email me at . By the way, the record store also had 3 CD copies of the Live at Wembley, 1 CD copy of Guaranteed, and 1 CD copy of Forever Now (Resurgence)...if anyone's interested, email me at the address above. Beezer One I think would be a great song. I'd think of it as a mild-introduction to the band; the song is very palitable, and not too complex yet very catchy in it's own right. I like Heart on the Line, but it might not be a good *first* song. As for Almost There, about 9 years ago when I was living in the dorms, I was blasting that song and somebody walked by my room, turned around and asked me who I was listening to. Now, I'm a big fan of the movies, but I never participated in any newsgroups, mailing lists, nor have I read any of the books so this may be old news to everyone, but they show a scene from Star Wars where Han Solo runs in to Jabba at the space port. My only other suggestion would be a version of 'Out Of Sight, Out Of > Mind'. Good call. And "A Pharoah's Dream", which the 1 version I heard could use some cleaning up, but I would rather hear a not-great (sounding) version of a rare tune than a super-clean version of a tune always heard. Others could be the cut tracks from the new Live @ Wembley, Tracie, and the bass solo (were there others that didn't make the cut?). That way that concert is complete. Also maybe a track or two (or the whole concert) from the few shows that Alan Holdsworth performed. Indeed rare. They are divided into forms, with Greek mythological names, and as time passes they all find their own groups of friends. Hans is somewhat of a swot when he arrives and spends much of his time in study. This gives the masters at the school a very favourable impression of Hans as a conscientious student. So Hans progresses until he begins to befriend a young boy called Hermann Hielner. Hielner is somewhat of a loner and, though strangely drawn to him, even Hans has a difficult time understanding and ingratiating himself with his new friend. Hielner and Hans are as different as chalk and cheese. Hielner has a great intellect but is disaffected with the 'establishment'; he seems to be older and more cynical than his years would suggest but he is undoubtedly a genius. He hates all the Latin and Greek and disagrees with much of established thinking, preferring to write poetry. This independant thinking makes him somewhat of a 'loose cannon' in the eyes of the masters (a repeat of an earlier theme when the shoemaker warns Hans against having much to do with the vicar who had some very strange ideas a Christianity which flew in the face of 'established' thinking). After spending some time with the troubled Hielner, some of Hans's naiivity begins to wear away and he too becomes disenchanted and much less deferential and subservient to the College authorities. This change in Hans's character is not missed by the masters who summon Hans for a talk in which they advise him to stay away from Hermann Hielner. Hans and Hermann do see less of eachother from that point but that doesn't seem to arrest the change that is taking place within Hans. Hans has frequent headaches and, following an incident in class in which Hans drifted off into an unshakeable and involuntary trance, he is seen by a doctor and given an hour a day to walk around the College grounds and get some fresh air. During these walks Hans rediscovers the beauties of nature which he had loved so much as a young, carefree boy. Hans is gradually joined on his walks by Hermann but the friendship is once again stopped when the masters learn of it and forbid Hermann for doing so. Shortly afterwards Hermann disappears and everyone at the school fears for the boy's life (following a similar incident in which a boy drowned). Hermann however is picked up by a policeman days later in a local village and is returned to the college whereupon he is expelled in disgrace. Meanwhile, Hans's health is not improving, the headaches and daydreams increase and, in a lesson, Hans falls into a shaking fit and cannot stand. The doctor diagnoses the nervous disorder St Vitus's dance, and Hermann is sent home from the college. Once back in his village he finds he is shunned [as a failure] by those who once invested their time and effort in him. He becomes increasingly depressed and begins to make detailed plans for his suicide, selecting a tree from which to hang and composing suicide notes. The idea of suicide begins to fade however as Hans starts reliving the pleasures of his youth and, again, rediscovers the joys of Nature. Han's house forms a wedge between two very different streets in his village; on one side is a broad street along whom live the 'respectable' people in the town, on the other is 'Falken' street which is populated by mysterious buildings like the Tannery and Dickensian characters who were bad influences on young children (according to respectable grown-ups) and with whom Hans and others were forbidden to associate. He begins to recollect with increasing clarity the days he had spent in the Falken (which to him was like a great playground), listening to exciting tales and getting up to mischief. Hans makes a trip back to the old places and people on the Falken but realises that time has moved on; the places and people are still there but Hans's childhood, the very thing which made the Falken the exciting place it was, had gone. Hans no longer belonged there. Then came harvest time when everyone in the region did little else but make, and talk about, cider. Hans is employed by Flaig the shoemaker in winding the cider press where he is joined by Flaig's niece who is viting for the harvest. A romance quickly develops with the girl but Hans is so nervous and frail that the excitement of finding love for the first time leaves him literally overcome. In a matter of days Hans learns that his first sweetheart, Emma, has returned to her village without saying goodbye. Meanwhile, Hans's father has arranged for his son to start a new career as an apprentice mechanic. Hans is not looking forward to the prospect of his new job but is surprised to find he relishes the satisfaction of manual labour and enjoys the cameraderie of the workshop. He and the other young apprentices go out to a nearby town on Sunday night to celebrate their first wage packet. They get drunk and have a few laughs and Hans sets off home at the end of the night. A couple of days later Hans's body is pulled from the river. Whether it was suicide or accidental we don't learn.
