From: Jason Kosewick Organization: Ingram Micro Date: Wed, 04 Jun 1997 09:19:11 -0700 My name's Jason Kosewick, and I'm a Levelhead in the U.S. (one of many, I'm pleased to say!), in Orange County, CA. I was amazed that this many people still have a common interest in a group that hasn't released any new albums (with the exception of compilations and LAW) since '94! I have been a Level 42 fan since SAY (of course), but then quickly got into their older stuff (while it was much easier to find back then in the States)! I have to say that my favorite albums are L42, SITL, TC, WM, and FN!! So I guess that puts me on the keyboard side of the digest... although ALL their songs are terrific, well-crafted gems that in my mind will always be classics, even if they are in the bargain bins sometimes. :( I've been in lurker mode for the past year, although much of this is due to the fact that I have only gotten e-mail sending access recently! Thanks to all the contributors on the Digest; it's a real kick to read about the daily going-ons in the lives of Levelheads! I am proud to say that I have recently ordered AYGB (thanks, Zap!), and have every commercially released CD of L42 from the U.S. and Europe (quite an accomplishment for someone in the U.S., don't you think?). Bill, be careful about following Mike Lindup; someone may drag you in for stalking him! Although you could then get scoop from Mark's dad Ray.. so it's not a total loss. ;) Thanks for reading, and I look forward to more of the Digest! Awesome job, Eric! As one who fondly remembers the 80's, I thank you for keeping the band and their music alive! Mark King plays Alembic Series ll (not a Mark King Signature Series, as one might expect), Status Matrix Empathy, JayDee (John Diggnins' Alembic knock-offs), and Music Man StingRay...and who knows what else. They're all available internationally - a fully-loaded Alembic like Mark's, however, lists for about $9000(US). For beginning bassists, I always reccomend the Peavey Foundation bass - it's simply the best bass you're gonna find for under $300, and a plenty good one for most anybody (I own Alembic, Spector, Music Man, & Carvin basses, and I strongly reccomend the Peavey)! As for learning how, unless you're genetically gifted or something, you're in for a long, hard road. But it's very rewarding if you stick with it - actually being able to play Level 42 songs correctly is a singular thrill! There are many videos available to help; check out Alex Sklarevski's vid on slap technique. Andre... What up with this 20-bit FN? I hadn't heard about this - does anyone know if this is an 'HDCD' disc? (That's 'High Definition CD' from Pacific Microsonics - gotta have a compatible player to really get the benefits of the higher bit-rate.) Don Z. I got the Master Series CD today - a cracking cover worth the money itself depicting Saint Mark of King's bass beautifully. It's pretty well crammed full of good stuff too - do people know where the versions of the tracks were taken from, some sounded a little 'different' to me. I was prompted by the album cover to look at some of the pictures in the gallery on Vince's Level 42 site (http://kumo.swcp.com/synth/level42/) - the picture of Mark & Mike sitting on the sofa is fantastic!!! John V: you're doing great work - any thoughts on a cover design for Past & Presence yet anyone? So far the people I *know* are going are myself, Marcus Bone, Simon Bone and, of course, Lolita. I haven't been reading the Digest carefully for the last week or so, so I'm not sure who else is also going. I've just spoken to Lolita who is intending to be at Portsmouth Harbour station at around two o'clockish, where the IOW passenger ferry leaves from. Could anyone else who's also making a pilgrimage to Jo DaFlos let it be known, then perhaps we could all meet up at the ferry terminal or somthing (if you want!). Hopefully you should recognise us - one of us will wear a conspicious tee shirt! If anyone wants to contact me personally here's how: Home : 01705 641 355 Work : 01705 486 363 x4826 (david_goodall @ uk.ibm.com - I've got the day off on Thursday as I'm moving house, but I'll be there on Friday). If we don't meet up Joe DaFlos is about two thirds of the way up Union Street on the left (in Ryde). From the passenger ferry, walk down the pier (unless you're a good swimmer) and turn right. About 50 metres or less on the right is the bottom of Union Street - it's dead easy to find. I don't know where the car ferry terminal is I'm afraid - perhaps someone else knows? Well, that's it - I hope you can make it!. Charl : > Also, is it hard to learn bass by yourself or should one take lessons > and/or buy books. I read somewhere Mark King learned by himself in a > music shop after hours. How long does it take to learn playing at an > "average" level(!) ? I learnt by a mixture of blood, sweat, tears. Going to lots of gigs watching lots of different bass players. And lastly, listening to loads of Level 42 instrumentals and playing the bass 'til I got it right. It took a while, depends on your learning curve. If the desire is there, you'll learn anything, in a short amount of time. Mark has used basses by Jaydee, Ashley Pangborn, Wal, Status and Alembic. And they are all expensive. Amps by Trace Elliot (which are not as expensive as they used to be). 30 - 90 gauge strings, really thin sounding, but great for slapping. It's really personal preference at the end of the day, where basses are concerned. I'm using a high-end-of-the-range Bass Collection bass, sounds lovely and covers most of the sounds I need in the studio. I mostly play Chapman Stick now, but that's another tale altogether. Anyway have fun, tell me how you get on. Then, the horror!! After the song ended, the DJ said...'One Hit Wonders from Germany...I wonder where they went...I think they were real popular in Europe...' The DJ's name is Ken Shelton. Naturally, I no longer respect his intelligence. He's been around awhile, and I thought he 'knew' music - I guess not. Naturally, I fired off an email to WBOSOnline @ AOL.Com, and asked them to play more songs by those German Wonderkids, and correct his mistakes. Wasn't it Herr King, who once said "Ich bin ein Berliner?" p.s. I won't be going to Vegas, unless I get a last minute deal - just been to busy. Have fun w/o me. Also - there is a spotlight article in the Globe (trash) newspaper, on Las Vegas, this week, not that I've read it or anything. You know, in this generation of Me-Me-Me, nobody is willing to accept blame or admit a mistake. Well not Me! I didn't know there was a CD5 of Guaranteed. (Why didn't you tell me that, Winston? Ya made me look stupid in front of everybody) Sorry, John Vee, that's the last time ol' Chuck here will stick his neck out and try to contribute something meaningful. Back to the mindless, inane comments. You know, sometimes it gets real hot down here in the southeastern tip of Chuckville, and yer brain tends to turn to mush, so you start to say dumb things. Add that to the fact that I'll have twin babies by the end of the year and my head's spinning faster than a longtailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs....see what I mean? BTW, I DO NOT think L42 sounds like Culture Klub, but somebody at cdnow does. That always bugged me, that's why I brought it up. Randall, I have AT&T Worldnet. It's OK. I was on a session about 3 years ago (I play sax) and somehow the engineer on the session asked me if I ever heard Level 42 and made me a tape copy of his laser disc and I've since worn it out. I've been looking everywhere for the last year or so but no luck. Someone must have some ideas where to buy this on laser disc! Jamiroquai is my favourite band of the nineties......I was thrilled to be able to include "Cosmic Girl" on the playlist of my radio station (HITZ FM) here in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) but we're still undecided on their latest one - "Alright". They are to me what Level 42 was to me in the 80's....I have all three albums...and yes the first one is still the best... I caught them on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno two weeks ago - but they seemed a bit letharhgic.I'll certainly watch Conan tonight! Thanks. "so many years ago, heroes ruled the world...." Level 42 has a huge entry with about 90 records and a few CD's that are rated as collectors items!! But the most interesting thing is that at the bottom of the page it refers to other groups or solo artists in the band who are featured in the book (the book has 1440 pages!!!) Mike Lindup(Changes), Mark King(Influences),Thunderthumbs and Toetsenman (Freedom) but (and a big but!!) it also mentions a group called THE LEISURE PROCESS?????????????? Did MK or ML start up any other bands??? When I look under the 'Leisure Process' in the book it lists they released 2 records one 12" and one 7" of a song called 'A Way You'll Never Be' (with a 'B' side called 'Rachel Dreams' ??? Do any of the digesters know anything about this????? Out of interest the rarest records in the Level 42 entry are: A 1981 LP release called 'Strategy' which was officially unreleased with 6 white label test pressings only - worth £450!!!!! A 1980 release 12" of 'Sandstorm/POWERLINE: 'Journey to the Powerline' (promo only) - worth £90 A 1982 12" featuring 'You Can't Blame Louis'(Extended Remix)/'Love Games'(Live)/'Dune Tune'(Live) - worth £40 A 1980 'Love Meeting Love'/'Instrumental Love' 12" die-cut stickered sleeve worth - £45 A 1983 'Micro Kid'(Extended Version)/'Turn It On'(Extended Live Version)/'The Chinese Way'(New York Mix) 12" Stickered picture sleeve - worth £45 And more recently: A 1991 release 'The Complete Level 42' (9 CD boxed set) - worth £275!!!
