Yeah-yeah!) "Lessons In Love" is probably, but only probably, the worst video ever produced in the history of pop promos. The song became a hit before the idiots at Polydor knew what hit them, so they rushed of to make this terrible piece of filmmaking. (Whats' with the bulldozers?) Great song though... The best 42-video has to be "Children Say". Great parisian atmosphere, and two VERY relaxed musicians. It's a pity Phil didn't make it to the videoshoot... But have you any inside info as to why it keeps going up and down? I know we got to over 500 but now it's down below that. Is there really that much turnover? To Winston: hats? to my house? in the mail? soon? To Dirkies: Contact!!! yippeeee!!! To John V: thanks for the update. To Bill Miller: yes I too used to have The Chinese Way refrain stuck in my head. It took electro-shock-therapy to rid my brain of the evil message I was receiving. Seriously, I often get stuck on The Sunbed Song for periods of time. The same with All Over You. Actually, if I think of a L42 song, I usually have it swirling in my brain for days on end. A favorite of my kids is Livin It Up (the sun goes down). To all in the Northeast US: (weather alert!!! read at your own boredom) does anyone know when spring is going to arrive? My calander says June is here, but the weather says otherwise. Here in Buffalo, I just know we are going to go from 50 degree days to 80 degree days, thus bypassing spring yet one more time. To all: Anyone have any feedback on the new Paul McCartney CD? I read one review that gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Is is good? I found a CD called, POP MUZIK THE VERY BEST OF M which runs almost 80 minutes with a cool booklet mentioning several of our boys. I might not like it very much and may be willing to unload it. I'll listen to it again to decide but if anyone is interested, I'm here. The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: All Over You From: MScore0696 @ aol.com Date: Sat, 31 May 1997 14:52:15 -0400 (EDT) Levelheads; I have the Resurgence issue of FN which does not contain the track "All Over You". I paid large for this CD here in Canada as an Import and was wondering what is the best way to get my hands on the CD single for the song? The other version of FN is available here (1 copy in existence) but it's expensive also and I don't want to have to buy it just for the one song. I have never heard this song and the curiousity is killing me. Help...please. From: Bilaltab @ aol.com Date: Sat, 31 May 1997 15:00:56 -0400 (EDT) > PS: Bilal, I like the sparcity of colour on the SATS album. It's very > stark. Someone (I forget who) has a promo pack scan on their webpage, > it's way cool... ... I too LOVE the Staring at the Sun artwork. Its very pleasing and I would happily hang a print of it on my wall if one was available. I was just commenting that in the shop displays it didnt stand out enough, the way L/best did for example. The SATS art did however work exceptionally well on the concert programmes of that time, on which it had a much darker sandy colour. :::::: Hey, I guess one of the nice things about having a record collection is thumbing through it, brings back so many memories! All this talk of covers prompted me to flick through, then I started to look through the concert programmes, what great memories! Oops, I'm getting all emotional now! BTW, regarding the "do not mention radio play list'', I actually quite appreciate hearing about these broadcasts. I never knew L42 still get played in the USA! They dont get played here in the UK all that often! Bye, Bilal (bilaltab @ aol.com) ------------------------------ Subject: Live Disc One is just about finished From: John Venzon Date: Sat, 31 May 97 15:30:42 -0700 Thank you very much indeedy! ...is what Mark King would be saying if this posting to the list occured right after he finished performing any number of songs from Level 42! This means, of course, that you will be hearing Mark say this himself when you put on Live disc one! Stick with me on this one, 'cause it's gonna be a MUTHA! Here goes: After struggling with trying to get better and better vinyl dubs of the live tracks, I've decided to shake up the track listing in the interest of getting the first disc out the door, and to this end, I'm moving all the vinyl early live tracks to the second disc. To make up for the lack of that on the first disc, I've come up with a nifty idea: Let's make the first disc a sort of 'final reunion show'! You know, the kind we wish the boys in Level 42 would do. Think of it like this: every member, past and present, would come on tour, and the lineup would change based on the track, so for example you can imagine that there'd be _two_ drum kits, one for Mr. Gould and one for Mr. Husband. I've loaded all the tracks into my ProTools editing system and cut/mixed them to sound as if all the live tracks were performed as one show. I will track mark the songs so if you jump to the song you want to hear, it will be just the song, but if you listen through, it sounds like it was one night, just you and the entire lineup of Level 42! I've been working on it for a while, and let me tell you, it sounds great!. I even included the intro and standard 'countdown' for the opener and finished the disc with 88 from Physical Presence to give it that 'encore' feeling. Here's the track listing so you'll get an idea: Disc One: "Level 42 Mailing List Reunion Show" 01: Intro & Countdown (Guaranteed Live) 02: Microkid (Wembley) CD 03: Physical Presence (Live) CD 04: Silence (live) CD 05: Man (live) CD 06: Overtime (Overtime CD5) CD 07: Guaranteed (Overtime CD5) CD 08: If You Were Mine (Over CD5) CD 09: Her Big Day (Live) CD 10: The Sun Goes Down (Live) CD 11: Turn It On (PP Delete) Vinyl to DAT 12: Mr. Pink (PP Delete) Vinyl to DAT 13: 88 (PP Deleted) Vinyl to DAT Total Running Time: 73:33 (or so) You'll notice that if there were tracks performed together on the original release, I've kept them together. The flow really works. It opens and closes with the original lineup, with the middle being a mixture of the later lineups! Moving the early live vinyl tracks to disc number two does a rather interesting thing: since all the performances come from 1985-1990 all the performances have the same polished 'vibe' that their shows from this period have. This gives the whole disc a through line. Lest you think me some sort of 'sinner' let me assure you that I haven't done anything unsavory to the tracks, I've just overlapped and finessed the heads and tails to sound as if they were all performed in one night. It REALLY works! When I get a test pressing done, I'll send it to Zap and see what he thinks. The added benefit of doing this disc this way is I can have the master to Zap for burning within two weeks. Think about it. If you want to sound off on this idea, let me know. Jvenzon @ deltanet.com This means that disc number two will become.... ----------------- Disc Two: The Vinyl & Prince's Trust Performances 01: Dune Tune (Weave 12") Vinyl to DAT 02: Love Games (Weave 12") Vinyl to DAT 03: 88 (Chinese Way) Vinyl to DAT 04: Turn It On (Micro-Kid 12") Vinyl to DAT 05: Follow Me (Live Remix) Vinyl to DAT --- 06: The Spirit is Free (Guaranteed Live) Laserdisc to DAT --- 07: Something About You (10th Prince's Trust) CD 08: Running in the Family ('87 Prince's Trust) CD 09: Hot Water (Prince's Trust '86) 10: Heaven in my hands (Prince's Trust '89) 11: Lessons in love (Prince's Trust '89) 12: Summertime (Prince's Trust '89) Total: 67:?? This means that we can fit one more track on the second disc, so keep those offical release suggestions coming. Also, the track order of disc two isn't set, and will change. Track 12? You say... Summertime??? What the hell is that?? Well, it so happens that Level 42 was the house band for the '89 Prince's trust, and "Summertime" is the standard (from the musical "Porgy and Bess" if I'm not mistaken) featuring violinist Nigel Kennedy as the lead, but since it's an instrumental, it sounds like a Level 42 cover song with 'special guest Nigel Kennedy' not the other way around. It's a nice performance, rare, and heck, sounds great hearing the boys play out into a different style of music. Besides, we have the space. I still need cleaner dubs of all the vinyl tracks on disc number two, so if you've got a good turntable and the posibility of copying the tracks to DAT either by yourself or someone else, the person who gets them to me gets the two live discs for free (for their cost of getting the DAT to me). Let me know: jvenzon @ deltanet.com Put that in yerpipe'n'smokeit, John V P.S. Just 'cause everyone's doin' it: I was in a restarant last week picking up lunch and under the din of plates clanking and chatter was.... a muzak version of "Tracie"!!! I just about died. That... and I heard "Something About You" on the radio!! I heard "Something About You" on the radio!! I heard "Something About You" on the ra.... No, wait.... Wait... Nope, sorry, my mistake, I was actually listening to the "World Machine" CD. My mistake. ------------------------------ Subject: The Spirit is Guaranteed: By Law From: John Venzon Date: Sat, 31 May 97 15:30:46 -0700 Mark, > Hey John V. where did you get the live songs from Guaranteed? Was there > ever a live CD issued from the Guaranteed tour? Yes indeedy there was a live disc issued from the Guaranteed tour as well as a full concert video (Called for some strange reason, "Guaranteed Live"). The CD has 3 or 4 live tracks (sorry, don't have the notes in front of me, but they are all on the upcoming live disc) and were provided by the lovely and talented Winston Walker. (Some say he has an enchanting singing voice, and was for a time in the 70's the darling of the Broadway theater set. That was before the bizarre gardening accident that left him without the ability to sing in Latin, his trademark. Following the down time he kept busy performing as a turntable conductor in clubs throughout the quintburrows area, where he played on a regular basis, the music of an electronique quatrostringo bassafundo performer by the name of "Marcus Kingoungs" The new darling of the DJ set, a quick rise to power, followed by a high fall, then rise, then fall, fall lower, then rise higher, he quickly earned the nickname of "Winston" which he still uses to this day. Not a day goes by that someone in America uses his trademark slogan that was on every T-shirt, bumper sticker, banner and button: "Here, take a drink of this milk and tell me if it's rancid.") > Also, what is this song "The Spirit is Free" , I've never heard of it > in Canada. It's actually a solo Mike Lindup song. It appears on the "Guaranteed Live" Laserdisc. Since it's actually performed _by_ Level 42, and the fact that's is rare it's on disc number two. Though SAY (acronym alert) > has always been my favorite of theirs, the more I think about the LMN > video, the more I like it. LIL's video was kinda drecky, though. The > sad thing about the HIMH video is that it's a pretty exciting video > artistic-wise, compared to most of the others out there. The Take A Look > and Tracie videos are also extremely well-done, if you ask me. And I > have a soft spot for TCOY's video, simply because of the groovy stumbling > around drugged-out "peace" dude. I have to agree with you here, also... but my soft spot for the TCOY vid is the dancing flowers. Right about 1989 I really did want one of those things -- never got one, but I thought they were so funny...... (Hey, I was only 11 in 1989, give me a break. :) One thing that still bugs me about the Take a Look video, though, is really no fault of theirs -- it's the fault of watching Fait Accompli too many times. The guy describing the shot that pulls down the street and into the bar annoys me. ;) (You know, "I'm really excited about this but I can't show it...") I'm sure it _was_ a tricky shot to coordinate, but I've seen much longer scenes, and for that matter entire videos, done on a single tracking shot -- one recent example of which Shall Remain Nameless, unless you "really, really want" to know what I'm referring to. Here's a question: If you could take any L42 song -- single, album track, B-side, whatever -- and make a video of it, what would it be? Set whatever kind of scene you like, don't bother worrying about whether the song "should have been a single," and feel free to look at it from a 1997 technical perspective (eg. if you remade the MicroKid video today.....). As a no-brainer suggestion to get the ball rolling, I still think "Fashion Fever" was just screaming for a video treatment.... shots of people trying out outrageous clothes, a few supermodels thrown in for good measure, you get the idea...... fire away! From Dan: > Subject: White Funky Seattle ya know, Dan, that's really quite a statement. Sure, so we're all pasty-white Seattleites who've never seen the sun, but I'd like to think we're funky, yes.
