Aw, I like The Ape, but I'll agree, it's not a good intro. I respectfully submit to the list of songs that newcomers "just won't get" (this doesn't mean I think they're bad songs, though I do think that about a few of them): A Pharoah's Dream A Kinder Eye (I like the song, but that GUITAR SOLO at the end, yick) THE CHINESE WAY (sorry, Winston) Beezer One Heart On The Line Set Me Up Almost There So there! :P Pat Flanagan Publishing & Design PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 email: pfpd @ pobox.com website: http://www.pobox.com/~pfpd TOTALMEDIA PUBLISHING: Print * Disk * Interactive * CDROM * Internet ------------------------------ Subject: Acoustic, etc. From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 15 Jan 1997 11:12:30 -0500 (EST) Hey, Hey, Hey! This has bugged me since I first purchased this album back in the eighties. Has anyone figured out the dialogue in the beginning of "The Pursuit of Accidents'? It always seemed that Mark says something, then Phil speaks. I could never make out what was being said. HELP!! Here is my Acoustic 42 list: . Dune Tune . Paixao - from Mike's solo album, 'Changes' . Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind (I'll use any excuse to hear this live!) . People (replace the synth chords with Acoustic Guitar) . Shapeshifter (Piano, Ac Gtr, Strings, and a violin melody) . Seven Days . Hours By The Window . SAY (just because) . Lying Still . Two Solitudes . Take A Look . Seven Years (Ac Gtr, Perc, strings) . With A Little Love (Sax, perc, piano, strings, ac gtr) . Love In A Peaceful World . One In A Million . Talking In Your Sleep . Time Will Heal (percs, strings, saxaphone playing the gtr line in the chorus) I think perhaps I got a little carried away, but what the hey, I can Dream Crazy, can't I? My list of tunes I love, but are probably under appreciated: . Theme To Margaret . Woman . Shapeshifter . A Floating Life . A Kinder Eye . Kick Or The Kiss - Boon . Pictures On The Wall - Mark King . I have a few things of value, only a couple I'm willing to give up though. I have a genuine MK bass guitar strap, used for his Status Bass period (84-87, not Matrix). I've seen it featured in "The Chant has Begun" video and various other appreances. It's well worn in and is set up for when Mark used to play bass on his chest. I've also got 5 or 6 sets of bass strings (used) that MK gave to me, he signed 3 or 4. If there's any interest in these reaching the Levelfest, let me know. I live in the UK so I won't be going but if anyones willing to fork out the cost, I'll send them (If anyone would like to buy the strap or some MK slapped strings, make me an offer), no way am I giving up the disc or bass though. Oh, can anyone send me a discography (my systems shit so I can't get it myself) so I can see how well I've done through the years. Cheers, Jamie. The Ape? After reading this, I decided to put on this track and listening to it again, since it's been months that I last played it. (Listening....listening....listening...) Well, perhaps you have a point. It's not that bad of a song, but the song 'My Father's Shoes' which is right after that, is a catchy, slightly country-ish tune that, while not in my Top 10, certainly does make 'The Ape' sound rather bland and uninspired. It shows in the lyrics too. Point taken. Now I'm listening to the beginning of 'A Kinder Eye'. This is one, smooth groove! You know, I really miss Phil Gould's drumming. While I think Gary did a good job on 'Guaranteed', I wonder if the drumming would have been tighter and less busy if Phil played. Oh well... One last item. I'm willing to pay BIG BUCKS for a CD of 'World Machine' with the 'Dream Crazy' bonus track. I need guidance O'Great Digesters.. One last item (for real). Please take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt. I'm just curious about this but after reading many letters about CD-R recording, it seems like a real pain in the gluteus-maximus when trying to find good disc to use, burning-in discrepancies, tracks skipping on certain playback equipment, ruined disc due to error, etc. I admit I don't know everything there is about this technology but something about a write-once format prone to many problems doesn't appeal to me. That's why I bought a Sony minidisc recorder/player (4th generation ATRAC) that sounds as good as any CD and its flexibility and convenience is the best I've seen in any format. Unfortunately, I don't see minidisc market exploding into the homes of millions of users like CD players but I think MD's need to be aggressively marketed to be relatively successful. I could go on about this but I just though I'd pass my thoughts on. I'm VERY curious about CD-R's though. In fact, I'm going to send Zaphod a blank disc so he can record AYGB for me. I'll have my checkbook out as soon a CD-R comes up to the flexibility/write-forever standards of MD's. Otherwise, I'll pass. Thanks for listening. His mother died when he was young and his father was happy living a humdrum existence with simple needs and simple ambitions in this unremarkable town. The characters who populate this place are similarly unremarkable and all seem happy for things to stay that way - that's how things always had been and always would be (growing up with a smalltown mentality?). This passive acceptance of a conservative, steroetyped and unambitous life is mocked and derided by Hesse; he quite openly blames 'The System' for stripping people of their individuality and aspirations by a continual process of attrition. This theme is continued with Hans; as the authority figures of the town have been subdued during their life, so they behave towards the young Hans who shows some precocious and outstanding intellect and talent for learning. Hans's intellect soon catches the eye of several adults who begin to see Hans as a potential candidate for the ordeal of the Landexamen - an exam sat by outstanding boys in the region who, if successful, will win a place at the Junior Theological College - a great honour. This means a secure future career for all those boys who pass. Hans, as is apparently only natural for a child as gifted as he, enters the Landexamen under very intensive interest and, consequently, pressure from, among others, the vicar, the local shoemaker (who is also a lay preacher), his headmaster and, of course, his father. This is the cue for a draining programme of extra lessons for which Hans 'volunteers' and, from that moment on, there is an enormous amount of expectation placed on his young shoulders to do well. The headmaster prescribes extra lessons in Greek which keep Hans up until very late at night. By the time he travels to Stuttgart for the big exam he is mentally and physically exhausted. The exam does not go very well for Hans who is still reeling from the pressure exerted by the adults who have bombarded him with [conflicting] advice for weeks. Hans is extremely surprised and pleased when he finds that he has won second place in the Landexamen and he decides (at least he thinks the decision was his) to go to the Junior Theological College. Once he has made this decision his schedule becomes even more intensive. The most interested parties are those who have a stake in Hans's success; that's not to say a stake in Hans's well being but for on whom some of the brightness of Han's celebrated intellect will reflect. There are extra lessons in New Testament Greek and Hebrew, Latin and extra mathematics. It was supposed to be the holidays and Hans should have been enjoying playing outside with the other boys. He had quite forgetten about his previous diversions like swimming in the lake, watching the birds or, his favourite passtime, fishing. All the natural urges for a boy his age had been snuffed out and replaced by his studies. Hesse is very critical of State education, just read the bitter irony of the following passage and then the single sentence which follows and which sarcastically sums up 'the State's' effect on Hans. It is easy to imagine that Hesse had suffered as a boy at the hands of the education system as there is a very cathartic feel throughout the book: "Many a person who is at present a contented citizen and persevering official might have become an undisciplined innovator or futile dreamer but for the efforts on the part of the school. There was something wild, untamed, uncultured in him that must first be broken, a dangerous flame that must be extinguished and stamped out. Man as Nature created him is a dark, incalculable and dangerous creature - a spring that bursts forth from an unknown mountain, an ancient forest without path or clearing. An ancient forest must be cleared and tidied up and greatly reduced in area; it is the school's job to break in the natural man, subdue and greatly reduce him; in accordance with principles sanctioned by authority it is its task to make him a useful member of the community and awake in him those qualities, the complete development of which is brought to a triumphant conclusion by the well-calculated discipline of the barrack square. How well young Giebenrath had developed." So we find Hans ready to make the trip to the College at Maulbronn where he will begin on a career path, with 30-40 other gifted boys, which will see him become either a lecturer or a priest. ***final part in next volume of Digest**** BTW, > Loz, where are you!! From: Mr Fish Organization: Sandstorm Date: Wed, 15 Jan 1997 21:20:08 +0000 Hi, I sent a post a short while ago asking if anyone had seen or indeed owns any of the 'Family of Five' CD Video singles. As a matter of fact I don't remember seeing it so it may never have arrived... Anyway, what I found at record fair in Southampton a while ago was a standad 120mm CD single with three audio tracks *and* a laserdisc format video (PAL). Actually, I suppose this isn't particularly outstanding as this was fairly common in the late eighties. The single is It's Over. There were four others (not altogether surprisingly) - has anyone else seen these at all? The only person I know who has was the guy behind the stall. Also, I now have two copies of The Early Tapes on LP on the 'Level Records' label, I can't remember if this was affiliated to Polydor in any way. Does anyone know the story behind this release? Are these from the original run of pressings of this album. Speaking of It's Over, it's pretty obvious that this video was made for the American audience. I know this sounds a bit glib, but did It's Over *look* like an "American" video. Back when this single was released I noticed that they'd added a slide guitar: was this all part of the plan? Lastly, a note to Emikatie (EMIKATIE @ aol.com) - (er, is this your correct name..?) ** Ah! I'm Scottish now living in Kent/working in London. I've been following the ups and downs of the band since first seeing them perform Chinese Way on Top of the Pops - it was such a long time ago! Most recently I've been rediscovering the RITF platinum edition. Some good remixes. Favourites - All the band line ups and all of the songs, however Livin It Up and Something About You stir special memories. I wondered if anyone caught the Mark King special on Meridian TV (Kent ITV channel) shown late last year. It was filmed on the IoW when Mark was putting together his new album which I believe he's now canned. Plenty of action from the man explaining his bass playing technique etc. My life is now complete..... Garry
