I had to give my opinion of the album covers. I agree with most of the previous impressions however one glaring omission is our very own AYGB!!! Now here is a well thought out, interesting and caring cover. Also, in color for the fortunate. Now for my worst. The White Funky. What's up with that? I looks like some deranged stained glass artwork with chalk drawn writing over it. Not to mention the lightning flashes on the rear cover. The booklet middle pages are also pretty mindless. A brick wall with the band line up. I must admit that Mark's name with the crown over it is pretty cool. Is this Backstages original idea or has it been done before? The machine stops. Very tastefully done. Dan wrote yesterday: >The HMV in New York, as Winston said, IS excellent, never seen a more >extensive collection, except for a whole in the wall in Wayne, NJ. ...Too bad that hole in the wall in Wayne - the Sound Exchange - is so darn expensive. Like the cheapest Level-related CD there is $25. But they've been a great source for me over my college years up there. TCOY, BobC [FYI, Sean Green's excellent "Midi Extreme" web site is at: http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Re: CD Covers From: "MNR. CA MOCKE" <9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za> Organization: Stellenbosch University Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 17:33:58 +0200 Hi all Regarding my opinion(s) about L42 CD covers... Level Best is my favourite cover. It sums up what the CD is all about. Does anyone know what the mountain's name is? The Level 42 logo is also very cool (I see it came from SATS album). I pressed myself a T-shirt with the Level Best album cover on the back and it came out excellent! :) The booklet might have been a bit more descriptive, more photo's would also have been cool. World Machine has an okay cover, where is it taken? It looks like mine heaps with power cables. The inside is very uninteresting though, only the lyrics and a small b&w photo of Wally. The RITF cover might have been a bit more "alive" to go with the level of success associated with this album. Something more like True Colors, at least. :/ Haven't made up my mind yet with the other albums... will soon Bye, Charl ------------------------------ Subject: HMV, t-shirts From: bb007 @ webtv.net (Brad Byers) Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 11:56:25 -0700 What does HMV stand for? Sounds like a cool cd store in NY (that's New York). Can somebody let me know their web site or e-mail? Does anybody know where I can purchase a L-42 t-shirt from one of their tours in the 80's? Is there a warehouse somewhere that might keep leftovers? Let me know if anyone might have a lead. The band all look rather upset, and > Mark's posing is just not on. The Guaranteed Album cover has come in for a pasting recently with the above comment, and also someone else asking why the band were in a boat. Well, like most seemingly pointless mysteries there is a reason for this photo being on the cover of this album. The rocks in the background of the photo are The Needles - a rocky outcrop at the western end of The Isle of Wight which are arguably the most famous landmark on the Island. For anyone who doesn't know, the Guaranteed album was the first L42 album to be recorded in the Summerhouse on the Island, hence the IoW landmark on the cover. I actually quite like the cover. Although it is quite dark and serious, I think this reflects the content of the music on the album. I could never understand why Jakko was on the cover though - he didn't actually play on the album at all. I'm not so sure about that, Richard. Al looks pretty healthy in that picture to me, but I never knew who he was before his pre-42 days, so perhaps you have a better frame of reference. > Staring at the Sun--the Chinese style motif is very trendy. Actually was wearing my awsome level 42 handmade shirt courtesy of you know who.... (thanks again...) and got a few nods from people in the music store for it... Anyway, one of my clients here on the beach asked me to supply the music for thier monday night 80's nights and there is plenty of level 42 in the mix... They wanted everything from punk to new wave to pop.... So, you'll here everything from Level 42 to Joy Division to Altered Images to Adam Ant to Laid Back to Sigue Sigue Sputnik to The Art Of Noise.... You get the picture.... Threw some Dead Milkmen and They Might Be Giants in for good measure.... Final comment... I know Zaph is out for awhile and I wanted the latest info on the newer, post AYGB projects so that I will be up to date on ordering and all that.... Also... Pat Flanagan... Got your tape and will copy the disc this week... "Live At Wenbley" - Unless Alan developed an ambidextrous streak his photo was reversed on the CD cover. The cover itself is pretty good but a bit plain. "A Physical Presence" - Definitely a good cover. The album shows that Phil is immensely more precise than Gary, all the while singing backup! Here's a question for the LevelMeisters - Did "Follow Me" ever make it out as a single? Mark says it was new, so... "Staring At The Sun" - I would believe the prints are Japanese, not Chinese. Speaking of the "Level Best" cover, where is that mountain located...? (/ò)_(ó\) "Level Best" - The purple tint in that photo is natural, not an added affect. "World Machine" - The meaning should be obvious.... Machine parts... barren world... duh! Personal Favorites: "Running In The Family" - What a bunch of fashion plates! When I get rich, I'm going to find out who did Phil's clothes (especially his scarves) and blow a fortune on a new wardrobe. The different hand positions from the lads is quite distinctive. "The Pursuit of Accidents" - Cute and simple "My Father's Shoes" (CD single) - Keep it simple. "True Colours" - This was their "find out" period. They drew the line as far as what kind of band they would be off this album. Most Obtuse: "Guaranteed" - What the hell does that boat have to do with anything about promises? Did Mark or Mike leave their Porsches near the dock?! On a scale of 1 to 10, about 2.4 Burning Question Nobody's Ever Answered: Who the hell is "Dana Coolshit"? One for the road.... Who did the lyrics for "My Hero"? What a > sight - pimply faced white kids with dashikis and afros doing Quincy > Jones arrangements! It was cool. Brad -- Are you from the San Luis Obispo, CA area? Or did a whole bunch of schools go through a dashiki phase in the late '70's? Laguna Jr. High in SLO was using color-coded dashikis for Concert and Stage (Jazz) Bands, and Concert and Stage (Jazz) Choirs. A mostly-yellow pattern signified membership in the larger groups (Concert Band and Concert Choir), while the red-themed dashikis meant you were in the jazz groups. Thinking back on it, it was a very "Star Trek" kind of thing, all of use running around in our color-coded uniforms. SLO was not very racially diverse (still isn't, to my understanding), so it was just about 100 percent white kids running around in these very cool dashikis. It must have been quite the sight ... As for Mark King carrying on the Level 42 name by himself, it's certainly not unprecedented. Just ask fans of ABC or Tears for Fears. Then again, having Mark use the name would be better than something dumb like (the very nice and cool) John Thirkill touring with Krys Mach, billed as "(very quiet) a band featuring people who were once touring members of (SHOUTING) LEVEL 42!!!" Some bands do that! Just check out the American County Fair circuit. My buddy Frank Warren, a music writer, always previews the upcoming shows at a local fair by listing the number of original members currently touring as that band. Sometimes, the numbers are ugly low -- like "one guy who used to be the horn player for THE TURTLES!" Probably a rip off, yes, but, Cool that a group in the late 90's want to use this as a sample.....and that after everything said and done, they've turned to a L42 track because they have respect for quality?! Anyway, I quite like it!!! Jon "Jump into this 'ere blanket what we are holding......and you will be alright!"
