From: "Richard J. Reddick" Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 11:22:17 -0500 (CDT) Right. Dirk's got me on a ranking rant... BEST LEVEL 42 CDs BY COVER, PACKAGING, ETC. 1. Level Best--cool photo, my preferred L42 logo on the front, and I liked the inlay photo. Although it's disturbing to see Alan obviously very ill at this stage of his illness. Do y'all think that the photo is making a statement, perhaps? Maybe saying, "yeah, Al's ill, and we could hide him away, but this is what AIDS does to people, you should see?" The purple tint is cool. Minus points for no lyrics and no L42 story (it is a greatest hits album, no?). 2. Staring at the Sun--the Chinese style motif is very trendy. There's always been a Asian sort of influence to the band (Chinese Way et al). The little caricatures for each song are neat, the typeface is bold (something about the all-caps, perhaps), and I like the inside cover photo (Mark looks cool with long hair, IMHO; but Mike looks kind of pissy). You know, it was a few years until I figured out who was Gaz and who was Al... 3. World Machine--I dig the logo, as most people who see it do. Not sure what it means though. The back cover has our lads looking like fashion victims, though. Mark looks especially surly. 4. Live At Wembley--Great live performance packaging, with the notes from the fan. Very "modern" styling. Enjoyed the photos of the guys in various states of repose. Question: what the hell was going on with the Santa suits? Really cool seeing the original (I guess) lyrics on the hotel pad to LIL. 5. A Physical Presence--This cover kicks ass. Inlay is sort of sparse, though. Boon looks as if he smells something awful in his photo. After that they kind of clump together... I like to know EVERYTHING about how an album was made: where it was recorded, who played what, etc, etc. Liner notes are cool too. What are y'all's top picks? ------------------------------ Subject: the lone SATS/Guaranteed supporter! From: "Richard J. Reddick" Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 11:27:46 -0500 (CDT) Yes, Steve, the Guaranteed cover is bad... were they on holiday around the Rock of Gibraltar or what? The band all look rather upset, and Mark's posing is just not on. But I disagree that the guitars were overdone on SATS and Guaranteed... They were definitely brought to the forefront in a way the guys hadn't done before. I, for one, loved the change. I suppose that puts me in the minority among L42 fans, who prefer the albums before SATS and thought FN was a return to form... I was thinking, "where's the guitars?" Any other guitar afficianados? Rich ------------------------------ Subject: mo' on fro's... From: "Richard J. Reddick" Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 11:41:21 -0500 (CDT) Just for the record, put me down for one of those who had an Afro once... last year! Hairstyles were just boring me, and I was inspired by Scottie Pippen's return to form a few years back... I took a lot of razzing from the kids at school, but right after I cut it (it was about 2" high) lots of kids started growing theirs, too! Tried the Dennis Rodman look once; the kids dug that, too. I think Mike looked hard with the 'fro and dashiki, like a true African should! The HMV in New York, as Winston said, IS excellent, never seen a more extensive collection, except for a whole in the wall in Wayne, NJ. HMV has really good prices and always a full stock. dan ------------------------------ Subject: From: "Tom Sewell" Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 12:32:54 -0500 Whoah, it's been a while since I wrote in.... I dug out a Nik Kershaw tape the other day..."The Riddle"...and it dawned on me that it was none other than Mark playing bass on "Easy"...I hadn't listened to in in YEARS but it's still good stuff... I > remember it being on Long Play record but never saw it in Canada on CD. > If it was released on disc does anyone know how to get a copy? The Family > Edition had "Can't Walk You Home" on it. I purchased my copy of the Family Edition IN Canada (Winnipeg), but it doesn't have Can't Walk You Home on it. Perhaps we're talking about two different items. Mine has a grey sleeve with the tiny block prints of the four faces, along with a large color photo of the band, posed against a brown background. This indicates they just restarted the series. So that could mean Level 42 may be featured soon on WDR3. I have my video and Nicam/MiniDisc connection ready ! Anyone can keep an eye on the Rockpalasts ?? I wouldn't want to miss it this time (I only have a mono-tape recording of these gigs) And what is this Family Project remix LP never released on CD with CWYH and others??? Dirkies msg to ERiC: your CD is back on its way to MA! ------------------------------ Subject: Leaving Me Now From: Richard Lowe Date: Mon, 26 May 1997 10:20:32 +0100 Has anybody else heard the UK charts recently? There's some dance number (in at number 17 I think) in which they have blatantly ripped off Mike Lindup's keyboard backing to Leaving Me Now (slightly faster and played all the way through the track). Has anybody else heard this? Can they get away with it?! If Mike Lindup was dead, he'd be turning in his grave... - Richie
