From: TNAGB!TNH2!PaulH @ tnagbuk.attmail.com (Paul Hammond) Date: Tue, 14 Jan 1997 11:41:00 +0000 Hey all, Interesting L42 airing .. I was lazing about at home with the TV on last night, and University Challenge (a high-brow UK quiz show for intelligent people from university) was on. They were asking questions relating places/things to songs .. and they played The Chinese Way (the answer being 'Chinese' I think .. I wasn't watching the show, it was just 'on'). Nice to see someone still gives them airtime even if it is a bad quiz show :-) Bass regards. Paul. ------------------------------ Subject: Gun toting From: N Collier Date: Tue, 14 Jan 1997 12:39:30 +0000 Quick question (easy one really)... In which L42 video is a member of the band to be seen 'carrying heat', and which member is it? The Prodigy - sorry for the delay in the book summary, it's complete but in 2 halves - the first half is at work and the second half at home and I'm currently ill with flu (who isn't?). I'll need to get back to work before I can post the first half. This is also the case with most portables > and some CD-ROM drives. REAL old (1988 or earlier) CD players can have this problem, and yes, me too have such an antique CD player (one of the first Philips) but I have other CD players from the same period which do play perfectly 'long' CD's. If you still use such old stuff, not having a more recent player... well... you're like... erm... you know... :-) > It really has to do with the individual CD recorder and the software > used to create it. You might not have a problem, but then again you > might... I use the Philips CDD2600, released November 1996 (my equipment was manufactured 16 November 1996, firmware 10Nov96). So I might say I have probably the most modern CDR around here (5th generation CDR, according to Philips -see Internet for more about this CDD2600). The software is very recent too (December 1996, Amiga software). So I'm not worried about 'old' equipment to make these CDs. A note FYI: I received a reply note from Asimware Innovations, specialized in CDR(OM) software for Amiga. I asked them about this CD tracking problem (with the L42 live discs in mind ofcorzzz ;-))): This is what I received: >> 2. Will it support continuous audio with multiple tracks (I mean a live >> concert or a 70 minutes mix where the tracks skip after a song but the >> audio is non-stop, so no horrible 2 second pause or so) > > MasterISO v2 will have support for the full control over PQ encoding > (which is the ability to control the time between tracks and include > indexing). This piece of software should come out real soon (around Feb at max). All discs I burnt turned out to be OK, except 2 (the first was created with a beta iso-creator, the third disc ever burnt was wasted due to harddisk problems). So no CDR problems. > Before I burned the master which went out to the other two 'burners' > here in North America, I tested burning the CD on the following blanks: > TDK > Maxell > 3M > Taydo-Yuden (3 varities - they OEM a bunch of blanks for different > companies) > Sony > Each of which got a bit cranky after 69-70 minutes. Taydo-Yuden yielded > the best results, and caused the least amount of bad discs. I use TDK all the time, since I heard that 3M is crap, Taydo-Yuden was a nightmare according to reviewers (?), and other brands are very expensive or unavailable. Luckily for me, TDK was rated 'very good' in that 8 brand CDR review. I think it's stupid to sacrifice full length tracks to be backwards compatible with old CD players... It sounds like the M$-DOS story (yuk!!) IMHO, I go ahead with what I was planning to, and I'll inform the Digest about results later on (too busy right now) BTW, my mailbox got all of a sudden FLOODED with CD requests! Jezus!!! What have I done!??? ;-) But no panic, I'll arrange everything within a feasable time period (and contact remote burners for lightening my burn-burden) Update list of requesters follows next week Cheers Dirkies ------------------------------ Subject: Digest Live CD From: "dirk.vael" Date: 14 Jan 97 14:25:38 Yo there headz my comments on John's proposals for the live CD: Before I start: John is a great guy, and he remains a great guy to me! > 1-3 (All three deleted tracks from Physical Presence) great, no comment > 4: Mark King Bass Jam from Expohal Hilversum, Holland (1985) YUK, this is an insult for any CD player!!! I just received it yesterday in excellent shape. Thanks again. Loz, where are you!! Come back, come back. We miss you. John V, welcome back again! I got the DECK polished, but decided to take my chances with it, until I can afford a new DAT deck. I can't live without my digital! As far as the Live CD tracks, here are some of my opnions: 1. Do we really need to include the 3 track from Physical Presence? (just kidding, just kidding!! - sheesh, don't wanna' start another war!) 2. 'The Spirit Is Free' is already available on Guaranteed Live, does everyone want this track, or something uncommon? 3. Fashion Fever - same thing, it's already on the 'Live At Wembley' video. 4. My only other suggestion would be a version of 'Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind'. I think it's a great song, and an uncommon live commodity. But that's just my thought, remember - MAJORITY RULES!! SONGS TO PLAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD OF LEVEL 42 > BUT WOULD LIKE TO GET THEM INTERESTED: (this catagory open to much > discussion) Great category! It makes me think of yet another one: "Songs _NOT_ to play for those who have never heard of Level 42 but who you would like to get interested" Now, in this category, I can personally only think of one song: The Ape, which at the same time is in my category of least liked l42 songs. Also, about the Lowlands Level Fest (Feb 15, right?), I can bring the Level 42 screensaver and then we can all look at it joyfully (if you have a PC with Windows, that is, Andre) and those of you who are coming and would like to copy it, can, as far as I'm concerned. TO ALL DIGESTERS: I recently had some dialogue with Zaphod about audio equipment, in particular, CD players/recorders, Minidisc players/recorders, and the like. I'm interested in knowing (and perhaps others) what everyone has as far as a stereo set-up when listening to L42 or anything else. I'm willing to bet that among the L42 faithfuls, there are some who really care about the sound of the music; you know, bass and treble extension, musical warmth, timbre, soundstage, depth, "live" sound, and all of that audiophile garble. It's almost an obsession with me, especially since I got a home theatre rig. Anyway, the floor is open for discussion.... "There's Something About You Leaving Me Now. (I am partial to including them as they are great performances > and they sound even better..) If there is room, I say go for it. If there is not room, and you have to compromise some other tracks for these, then I say we either make this one a double-shot, or we leave them out. Many of these B-sides are still available (maybe not through the usual channels, but from some of the used and import dealers). I have the versions of Man, Silence and Her Big Day that you mention. I thought Man and Silence were somewhat lifeless, and Her Big Day--well, it's a good performance but I never cared much for the song. I'm not trying to leave anyone out here, but if this is a collection of rare stuff, then I say let's go with the really rare stuff. That, and I'm much more partial to the older tracks and I'm really wanting to hear some of them live (particularly if the recordings are better than the White Funky). Okay, those are my two cents worth... Now I'm broke. It is allways great to learn new and obscure facts about my all time favorite musical group, bar none. But its time to get a little wild.... Stranded high atop my desolate mountain paradise a sinister thought came to mind. What is the most obscure Level 42 artifact in the world? (Suddenly the theme to "Raiders of Lost Ark" begins...) Is it the fabled Elite label Strategy album? A letter from Maurice White concerning "Chineese Way"? The infamous SAY cane, used by the sinister SAY Mark King clown? As an incentive to bring more discussion and foolhearted tomfoolery to this great digest I propose a hunt for "The Lost Pieces of the World Machine" Your mission, if you choose to except it, is to help find the most obscure, ellusive, and potentially dangerous Level 42 band memoribilia, recordings, and artifacts. And with any luck we can put these treasures on display at the upcomming North American Levelfest '97, for photo posterity. There is no prize for having found these tidbits, except for exclusive bragging rights. After all, how many people can say they own a true piece of history. And as you stand next to your mounted display of, say, the L42 jerseys worn in the "Love Games", you can say to yourself, "I am truely a Level Head!" Why do I propose this? Simple- I live in Denver, and its 10 degrees outside. (Any other dumb questions?) ROUND ONE- It had occured to me that one of the most precious artifacts a Level Head could own would be a copy of the famous "Mark King 'Kansas City Milkman'" photo that inspired the song. Obscure, sure. Hard, if not impossible, to find; you bet. A medal worth attaining; you're damn right! So, if any care to venture out for this prize let the chase commence. And good hunting! I have started a new job and in the process of moving to another house! Also, LEVELFEST is taking a large part of my time lately, as I want this to go over GRAND! I am not complaining, but I have had so many to do, that I have done them on a first come, first serve basis. Also, it takes 6 hours to copy just one video, basically 1 video a day and a couple of audio tapes a day! I realise that some of you are growing impatient, as I have had the stuff for awhile, but at the same time I do not want to die on L42 overkill and wear out my VCR,as I just got it! I did not know that I was going to get a huge response from this video offer, next video release will be different as I will have it mass produced, that may make the price go up, but it will speed things up! This has not been a moaning and complaining session, rather I wanted to explain to the masses, that the videos are being done! For those of you who have a large video/audio request, these are being done last! Any comments, you know where to send it!
