(quite rightly!) Finally someone to share HEATHROW-playing problems with! This is one of my favorite 42-tunes, and as Mark wrote, it is a bugger to play! Actually, I always wondered if the boys played the song in E, and then due to technical problems, the song turned out sounding like F... Or maybe King retuned his bass in a clever way. Or maybe, but only MAYBE, Mark King is a infinitely better bassplayer than me... I have a distinct memory of listening to a bootleg tape from a live concert, and as I played along on my keyboard, the song was suddenly in E! Perhaps it was wishful thinking... (quite rightly!) I had completely forgetten about that one ! Heathrow is in the key of F, but doesn't rely on left hand slapping, more left hand damping. There is a clear difference, and looking back on it something that I should have said in my earlier posts. The actual slapping in Heathrow is generated by the right thumb, the left hand only controls whether the note is dead or is the glorious F. And as you point out Mark, is a bugger to play. Rob : I played an Alembic with a 36" sacle length, i could feel the nerves in my elbow by the end of the experiance. Green" Date: Sat, 17 May 1997 20:32:41 -0500 Bruce, My deepest thanks to you for picking up our souls on the digest a little. It must have been really great to meey Gary and talk to him about his current endeavors as well as the past with L42. I am always, as well as others, enthused to hear the goings on with the members. Thanks again Bruce, that was a great message to post for us all! ~Sean -- *********** "The MIDI Extreme" *********** * http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm * *** For the best MIDI files on the net!*** ****************************************** ------------------------------ Subject: Gary Husband From: bb007 @ webtv.net (Brad Byers) Date: Sun, 18 May 1997 09:48:20 -0700 Bruce, thanks for the Gary Husband update. That was probably the most enlightening info to date for my 6 weeks on the digest. Gary is a superb drummer and musician (relax, it's a drummer joke). As a new member, can someone briefly give me a consensus viewpoint on the "Phil vs. Gary" debate? To me, Phil is Level 42. p.s. I'm just looking for an overview, I't doesn't have to be analyzed to death! Brad drummer in Vegas, oops... I mean musician in Vegas ------------------------------ Subject: RITF Platinum From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Sun, 18 May 1997 13:08:12 -0400 (EDT) Last time, Mark asked.... > They also had an import CD called Running in the Family (Platinum > Edition). Just wondering if these two pieces > are rare and if the CD is worth getting... any thoughts or comments > would be appreciated. Thanks. RITF Platinum Edition isn't rare at all, but rather a current release. I don't know about Canadian currency/prices, but Audiophile Imports has it for $20 US (just bought mine a few weeks ago). I intend to enjoy a nice Montecristo torpedo later, though. Now where's my Napoleon! If conflict is handled in a manner that growth is the product, then the digest will will prevail and be better as a result. There will ALWAYS be opposing opinions and not everyone will be happy. (for you sociologists out there I guess you call it "dialectical" Its really not unlike a marriage or conflict between two countries, or astonishingly, between members of a music group! Think how boring the digest would be if there was no conflict. This is awfully philosophical, but sometimes during a lull its easy to become focused on the negative stuff, which is OK and necessary. Yea, Average White Band is great, I think they're releasing a new CD this week in the USA, but don't know if it's new stuff or what. ------------------------------ Subject: Cigars From: N Collier Date: Sun, 18 May 1997 21:13:24 +0100 ***Warning, cigar-related posting. You may want to skip*** Though not strictly 'a smoker' - and certainly not in public places (the smallest whiff of cigarettes makes me feel sick) I do enjoy the odd cigar (one of my most prized possessions being a cigar box my closest and late friend bought me as a wedding present). My wife brought me a box of Havanas back from Spain recently - I had one and spent about the next 20 minutes lying down recovering - EXTREMELY strong! I'm also a fan of Burmese cheroots, get them from a speciality tobacconists in town. Great shame for Americans about the Cuban embargo - now you get to try cigars from other South American countries though. On a similar note, can you believe people are actually suing cigarette manufacturers for smoking related illnesses? Even if you loathe cigarette manufacturers you must admit this is purely gold-digging - I sense the presence of Lionel Hutz, Attorney at Law. ******************** The Gary Husband story was brilliant. Bruce, you showed great presence of mind to ask such pertinent questions on behalf of us all. Amazing that Gary has never heard Forever Now. I'll keep an eye out for the Mullen band locally - seem to remember Mullen et al appearing on my 'Best of Brit-Funk' album 'Slipstream'. From: The Bassman Date: Mon, 19 May 1997 09:37:28 +0100 (BST) Howdy Folks. This is a help request on behalf of people not "in the know"!.... Some people have contacted me requesting info on how to get files to the FTP site for the CD-ROM project. I confess I am an FTP novice and know only the basics. I also use FTP on the University's UNIX system, so it is unlikely that I can help the majority of users of DOS and windows FTP software. Could somebody who is in the know re: dos/win FTP suggest - software - where to get it - how to use it to put things to the L42 FTP site Perhaps someone can even suggest how to get netscape to upload (Netscape for win 2.01 on my machine doesn't seem to want to know about uploading!) Maybe a pointer to a agood FTP FAQ could be useful. Oh, and just as a reminder, the CD-ROM website is at: http://www.york.ac.uk/~mjt101/lev_42/l42cdtop.htm Cheers folks. TCOY, Mark.
