Don wrote: > The accent thing stuck with me because, the first couple of > times I saw her - on MTV, Letterman maybe - she did indeed speak with > the phony accent! Well, how long has she been living in Britain, now? I can tell you from experience that some folks do pick up the accents and dialects of areas that they live in- for example, I had a buddy in the Air Force who got stationed all over the place. First came Texas, and you guessed it, after a time he picked up this twang- it was really odd to talk to him on the phone! Then came Alaska, and he picked up that local pattern. Then, he ended up in England for a good long time- and did indeed sound British for all intents and purposes, but not quite right. It's taken years for him to settle back into his old "original" California speech patterns and accent. So it's very possible that Tori has just absorbed the local flavor and that's really the way she speaks- and it sounds phony because a) she's not British, so she "shouldn't" sound like that, and b) the accent is a hybrid of two continents, so it's not purely English. Possible? -Jeff "If you hear what he says, it's acceptable..." [or, c) she's just a big phoney. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: I didn't say that! Too many facts, > figures, and theory. I don't see any winks or grins here, so the tone of this post is getting scary. So is everyone who has knowledge of music theory necessarily 'a musical android'? I don't disagree that non-formally-trained musicians can come up with some wonderful stuff (myself, for instance...ahem), but when I get a good musical idea, I'm aware that it is harder for me to find places to go with it since I'm not apprised of all my theoretical options. I eschewed a musical education early on - as a youngster who had no idea he would one day end up writing songs. Today, I only WISH I had studied music formally. In fact, this nasty argument has been most educational! >> My favorite is probably 'Hot Water' which in general is meant to sound >> somewhat like a train or railroad engine. Okay, this is where I have to cross the aisle and sit with Randall. I collect trains, and I don't know what the hell Matthew is on about! That never even occured to me. For all you Boston-based Moxy Fruvous fans, I just picked up a flyer at HMV Records announcing their concert at The Paradise on 5/15/97 [Obligatory Level 42 tie-in: this is the club where Level 42 played during their RITF tour... there's a "Boston Gig" bootleg available for the show, and on it Mark remarks that the layout of the club is "wacked".] On 5/16/97, they're appearing somewhere in Harvard Square, probably outside of HMV. The flyer says this about the band (which is worth reprinting regardless of *which* band!)... :: The Octopus (Champaign, UL) says "... they sound like the Roches meet :: XTC at a party thrown by Camper Van Beethoven for Robyn Hitchcock's :: marriage to Cole Porter with They Might Be Giants as wedding band and :: Tom Lehler acting as minister, but just as everyone starts singing old :: Queen songs the party is crashed by the entire cast of the Muppet Show. :: Moxy Fruvous is that good." By the way, I've never even heard this band... any reviews so I can decide whether or not to go? -Eric -- Eric J. First of all, I just wanted to say that I subscribe to a few digests and mailing lists.. and this has to be the most intelligent and humourous one I have ever seen. Sometimes when I read through the other digests it makes me wonder about people.. but maybe my tolerance level isn't that high.. Oh well.. Secondly, I just wanted to see if anyone in the Bay Area is going to JAMIROQUAI tonight.....I would like to meet ya if you are..It seems they are a popular group on this digest. (I absolutely love "Traveling Without Moving") Also..speaking of CDNOW.. I was at their website browsing through the collection of Level 42 cd's and noticed they have an autographed cd-single.. has anyone ordered this from them??? I just wanted to let you all know that I ordered a CD from Audiophile and it came within 10 days!! I also spoke to someone there and he said they have the Level 42 biography in house.. but it will cost you $50.00!! Needless to say.. I didn't order it. I may be taking on the responsibility of the Vegas shirts.. I spoke with Winston and I might be able to swing a good deal on them..If anyone else has an opinion of this let me know.. Thanks go to Matt Rice for the incredible t-shirt. I wore it with my Level 42 hat and I got a lot of queries! People seemed shocked that someone else knew who they were!! Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Theory application AND inspiration, Model Friend, Wild Orchid From: angelina rogero Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 17:13:41 -0700 (PDT) Hello everyone, I have a few comments about the Matt/Randall debate regarding the musical training and theory knowledge of Level 42. Didn't it start out with someone needing to write a paper analyzing the musical concepts of Level 42's music? Well, I believe Matt was initially just offering some suggestions on what to write about when he offered some insights as to what theories apply to their music. I didn't get that he was suggesting that Level 42 consciously thought of formulas in order to write ALL of their music but then with Randall's responses I'm getting that he is defending their inspiration regardless of theory, perpetuating the myth that they have a lack of musical training and saying that most of their music is coincidentally coinciding (ha, ha) with music theory. In Matt's posts I understood that he was trying to defend their musical training along with their "humanness" and their ability to put it all together so ingeniously. That's why we all love them, right? So Randall, don't be so alarmed with Matt's comments, he is not denying the pure emotion and (divine?) inspiration found in Level 42's music. I have read the Biography so I know they have some (if not, A LOT of) formal training (ALL of them). I think they used the knowledge of concepts that theorists came up with after analyzing the music of many composers before. They know that these concepts in music theory 'happened' to work very well at evoking emotion and Level 42 used them to their advantage. I'm sorry to go on about this but I've felt for Matt's take on the subject in the past week and since it WASN'T kept in private email, I felt I had a chance to comment as a digest member. BTW, I DO think "Hot Water" sounds like a train and that "Chinese Way" sounds like what us westerners think of as traditionally Asian scales. Coincidence? I think not. On another subject, I was listening to "Model Friend" today and as with every song I'm hearing lately, I applied it to my life. Before today, I thought the lyrics might mean that the speaker is saying they don't love the person that they're talking to back and so they can't be the friend that the person wants them to be. But TODAY, I thought that maybe the speaker was saying that "I can't be the model friend that you want me to be because I'm in love with you and you only want to be 'friends'? I don't know, I still can't figure it out. I was never really fond of analyzing poetry in school so maybe I'm way off base. Am I? What do y'all think of the lyrics to "Model Friend." Oh and yes, I've heard of and heard a little of 'Wild Orchid.' True, they can sing but their music wasn't really my cup of tea. Maybe I'd like the other songs I haven't heard by them yet a little more. I heard that one 'orchid' used to be a cast member of the Nickelodeon show, "Kids Incorporated." That's all (enough?) for now, Angel ------------------------------ From: "Rehn, Jerry W,, DMDCWEST" Subject: VegasFest T-Shirts Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 22:32:00 -0400 To one and all... I applaud his efforts and would like to pose a question to those out there that have any silkscreen connections for t-shirts. I created the artwork sometime ago and have had no luck at all with screeners in my area. If anyone would like to tackle the t-shirt project, please e-mail me and I will send you the artwork as an attachment. I have been swamped both professionally and personally since the beginning of the year and there is no letting up in the near future. For those who haven't seen the artwork, Winston has been good enough to put it on his web page at the following URL: http://members.aol.com/winman42/sunshrt1.htm (correct me if I'm wrong Winston) If someone out there is interested, I will clean the artwork up and send it asap!! The goal is to get them produced before the VegasFest, but that may be a bit too ambitious at this point. Just drop me a line and we can get started. I will do my level best to respond within a day on the request and no more than two days on the artwork. He actually suggested that I check with one of the band's 'fan sites' on the web for more info. >> Hi all, I spoke to Bill at AB-CD briefly today. AB-CD has supplied CDNow with their imports in the past and is still supplying some to them for the next month or so. He did say that he *didn't think* that there was a track listing on the announcment that he had and that he wouldn't get much more information about them until they were released and they had copies. He said that he expected this to be within the next 30 days. When I mentioned that CDNow had APP, at 85+ min. complete, listed as 1 CD for less than $19 he said that he didn't know who they were getting their imports or information from but that he wouldn't put a whole lot of confidence in what the web site has listed for tracks. [ The above are not *exact* quotes but basically the info he related to me about these releases. Please don't hold he or I to them. also, he was not slighting CDNow, just stating a fact.
