DV 042 !!! I guess I couldn't resist! it costed me some extra $$$ to ask a personalized plate, but hey, you don't buy a new car every year! As soon as I have my new car, I'll take a picture of the licenseplate and send it to ERiC. (the car is a black MGF VVC) To Winman: all the housejams are listed in the discography, as far as I know. And any news on the humless Guaranteed Laserdisc ?? To Dr Dre & Gert : pack your bags for a hot BURNING summerweekend in Luxembourg! This I get form the time I > met her, the times I've seen her live, and the numerous hours I have of > her taped. I kinda thought that might set someone off, Jay! Before, Baltimore and the DC lounge circuit in her teen years, I belileve she was from Winston-Salem NC. I THINK I first read that, along with the phony accent bit, in Rolling Stone many years ago. But if it is a myth, it's popular hereabouts. The accent thing stuck with me because, the first couple of times I saw her - on MTV, Letterman maybe - she did indeed speak with the phony accent! I guess she grew up a bit and realized it was a bad idea. Lots of American kids do that, Anglophiles, Beatles fans, no doubt some of you out there ;-) Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Physical Presence at CDNOW From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 15:06:24 -0400 (EDT) Hello all, I spoke to the manager of CDNOW, John Grossman, regarding the version of 'A Physical Presence' that he has listed on the companies web page. He said until he hears from the distributor, he has no clue about whether this release is 'NEW', or just the same old Polydor release. He actually suggested that I check with one of the band's 'fan sites' on the web for more info. He also sent me an E-mail message, which I have copied below: ---- ---- ---- Dear Winston, Thank you for taking the time to write us concerning a forthcoming release. As soon as our distributor gives us information regarding the title you are asking about, we will post the information on-line. My advice would be to check online periodically and see if there are any changes. You should also check our Bi-weekly CDnow Update that we send to our subscribed CDnow members. The Update contains a new release section that announces expected release dates. Thank you for shopping at CDnow! Yours truly, John Grossman Customer Service, CDnow (215) 654-8076 http://cdnow.com telnet cdnow.com ---- ---- ---- That's about all the I could get out of him. I might go after all. Someone told me the Tyson fight might be that weekend. Actually the Mike Tyson/Evander Holyfield rematch is on June 28th, not that I'm big on fights (it would make it harder to get a room). www.MTyson.com keep those L42 Connection Collection info coming. I have offers from DonZipf + Marc Dupuis (i wrote it down somewhere), and my friend's band. How about Lolita + Jason Bell? and others? From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 20:45:50 -0500 (CDT) Back a few digest ago, I said that any theory talk between Matt and myself would be done privately. I intend on doing that but I must comment on a few items now.... Matt writes: >>>Go back and listen to 'The Chinese Way' [ I hear many digesters >>>yelling and screaming NO!!!!!!!!!!]. >>>Perhaps it was just a coincidence that their choice of musical >>>scale/form matched perfectly with the theme of the song. >Randall, this was meant to be sarcastic. It should be crystal >clear to anyone that Mike & Boon (and even Mark for that matter) >consciously included 'asian-sounding' scales & chords in this tune. Well, let's see a show of hands. How many of you out there think it's crystal clear that the boys consciously included 'asian-sounding' scales and chords? Hmm...it seems like it's only crystal clear to you, I'm afraid. Did the boys confirm that with you personally? >If you go back and read my post again and listen to the tune >carefully you will see. If you still think it's a coincidence >perhaps we should talk about probability theory and randomness >instead of music theory [I have a BS in statistics along with >my degree in Music]. Of course Mike knows what a pentatonic >scale is, and that it has an asian sound to it. Oh my, now you have a BS in statistics! Well, who am I to debate with someone about probability theory and statistics? A musical android is who you remind me of, Matt. Devoid of feeling and emotion in music. I recall a few episodes of Star Trek, The Next Generation where Data was trying to "appreciate" the great works of famous 20th century classical composers but he couldn't get the "humaness" of their expression. Too many facts, figures, and theory. >>I personally don't know if the boys have had any musical training >>or not. If they haven't, which is what you more or less conclude, >>then it's coincidence that what they wrote out happens to fit many >>musical theories. >You did not read my original post very closely. I did not conclude >that the members of Level 42 have not had any musical training. I did read your post and I never said that you said Level42 had NO musical training. What I did say is that Level42 would not have written more complex modulations if they had MORE musical training. >I hypothesized that the music Mike wrote would probably contain more >complex modulations due to his formal theory training, and that the >music Mark wrote would contain fewer complex modulations. As long as it's strictly a hypothesis (an unsubstantiated conclusion), I can accept that. Very difficult to prove, unless you have talked to Mike and Mark. >The reason I love L42 (and have for ~12 years) is that they are >musically sophisticated and have built their success on superb >musicianship and musical knowledge. And I'm in total agreement about this. I've been a fan for 15 years and their music always sounds fresh and sophisticated. >My favorite is probably 'Hot Water' which in general is meant to sound >somewhat like a train or railroad engine. Here we go again! What do you mean "meant to sound somewhat like a train"? You're saying that whatever the boys did with their instruments...oops, I mean 'theory' applications, means that it HAS to sound somewhat like a train, period. OK, let's see another show of hands. How many of you out there believe 'Hot Water' sounds somewhat like a train? Remember, Matt says that it's 'meant' to be that way. What? No more interpretations? Well, if you say that it's MEANT to be that way, that's how it has to be. Darn. And I thought music and musical ideas were infinite. >Mike uses several minor 7th triads which are (not by coincidence) the >same as a train whistle. I'm surprised that a supermusician and theorymeister like yourself would make a comment like that. To quote you, it should be "crystal clear to anyone" that a train whistle is composed of many, many frequencies. There isn't a train whistle in the world that sounds like a minor 7th triad. Now, if you played minor 7th triads in every key all at the same time, THEN we're getting close. >Phil uses several clever 'back beats' on his snare and hi-hat which >correspond to the sound of the trains wheels-- CHOO choo choo choo >CHOO choo choo choo. Uh, I'll leave this one alone! >This is clever stuff, and I don't buy the notion these ideas came from >out of the air. They came from a knowledge of music and good musical >training, acquired through years of practice, performance, and formal >instruction. I have not read their biography so I can't say too much about their musical training. In the event you haven't experienced this yet, Matthew, many people get good ideas and clever "stuff" out of thin air everyday. Virtually every major classical composer got their ideas from life; childhood, environment, politics, love, tragedy, etc. This isn't taught in any theory book. Theory can help but it's not the final musical frontier. I have sent you an email to further explain this, to preserve digest bandwidth. OK, enough of this! I saw a little piece on TV about a girl group called 'Wild Orchid'. I know we have had talk about a female quintet in this digest but the three girls who make up WO can really sing! Does anyone out there know who I'm talking about? Winman: Did you get my tape? Also, I'll be sending my moolah for the two hats tomorrow or Thursday. Right, then! Randall "Oh, Bevin!! And I thought you were so butch!!!" [if you're a Wild Orchid fan, tune into the Go West Digest, which (for lack of anything better to talk about) has been discussing them lately... http://www.worldmachine.com/gowest -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: MAN MADE HEAVEN... From: "KAHAR, Kudsia (7250)" Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 14:26:04 +0800 Hey To Don Z., Hmmm...you wrote about Mark singing "Man made Heaven and Man made Hell...".....May I offer my 2 cents worth here? In my mind, I always thought that irrespective of Mark's beliefs or disbeliefs, that line reflected man's obsession with the good and the bad and how over the centuries, man has altered heaven and hell to suit their cultural practices. Am I making sense here? I'm from Malaysia where certain men (and I do mean men) have no compunctions about emphasising what's "good" and "bad" where women are concerned....and using an entry to heaven as bait. For example, I once had a stupid lecturer in college who was teaching us the principles of marriage in Islam and had the audacity to say that as Muslim women we should not question why our Muslim husbands should practice polygamy...and that if we encouraged it we were guaranteed a ticket to Heaven. Perhaps the old git's heaven - certainly not mine....and this is what I mean - the heaven this old geezer was referring to is a heaven where 1st wives enjoy paradise because they were willing to share VDs with the husbands' second or third wives....thus - "Man made heaven and man made Hell". Just a bit of info - In the Quran (Islam's Bible, so to speak) it is NOT encouraged for men to marry more than one - it was only centuries ago when the prophet Muhamed felt that widows of men who died in the war should not be left without any means to support themselves - and support them he did. Here in Malaysia in the present time however......men with no money to speak of marry young nubiles under the guise of polygamy....when it's really legalized prostitution! Well anyway.......had to vent a bit there! Thanks for reading this!! "So many years ago heroes ruled the world...." Kudsia.
