Leave it to Pat to misconstrue the size of Zaphod's package. It's what's inside that counts. On the subject of the influence of Mark King: Back when I was in the USAF, a few of us were sitting around watching a BET interview with Najee. Najee is a contemporary jazz saxaphonist. Well, we almost fell on the floor when he named Level 42 as one of his favorite bands. That was the first and last time that I heard an american musician mention Level 42. Here is an updated list of people 'confirmed' for the Vegas Levelfest taking place June20 - June 22nd. 20 people confirmed so far!! As of April 14th: Angel (California) Bill Wilson (Seattle) Brad Beyers (Vegas) Bruce Conrad (Boston) Byrdman (Colorado) Carl Mueller (California) Daniel James (Seattle) Jennifer Reddin Jerry Rehn (Texas) Kara T. As was previously mentioned by others on the Digest, Jimmy Breslin, the New York City newspaper writer, was the host of the episode which featured Level 42 performing "Something About You". The show aired on May 17, 1986. I have that performance on tape and I agree with those who say it was not the band's finest hour. I would attribute it to a less than receptive audience. Don't forget, May of 1986 was in the middle of the dark period for Saturday Night Live. True fans of the show find episodes from that era painful to watch. I remember attempting to obtain tickets for a scheduled Level 42 performance at the Park West in Chicago only to find out the show was cancelled to allow the band to appear on SNL. -- Chris Remington Account Executive dsmedia group 2110 Pewaukee Rd. From: J Shuford Date: Tue, 6 May 1997 08:15:32 -0700 (PDT) Here's a politically oriented question that still has something to do with music. Recently some Brits have lamented the loss of a political figure like Margaret Thatcher. The last time I spent any extended time in England, I was a exchange student living in a rather blue-collar town with a working-class family. Now, obviously, they weren't too hip on Maggie. But then there are these musicians we (or many of us) admire who were/are very down on Maggie and Thatcher-era Britain. Mark King has attempted to distance L42 from that era in print several times. Phil Gould (and presumably Boon too) was down on it. Mike Lindup wrote Judgment Day about Thatcher. Shifting gears, the various members of The Style Council apparently loathed her (at least Paul Weller and Mick Talbot for sure). Now, I don't presume to know much about British politics, economics, etc. I guess my question is: is there a tension here, or do politics of an artist/political message not matter when it comes to music we like? I don't intend this as a criticism, nor is it really directed only at these Brits who have spoken in favor of Thatcher. I think it's sorta sociologically interesting, and I think it poses an interesting question for all of us about our relationship to the political and the aesthetic. For example, Mark King has said things in print over the years that made me cringe politically, but he's still my musical hero. Ah well, just something to think about...Again, I mean no disrespect or offense to ANYONE by this post.
