Andre Huijts ------------------------------ Subject: Ranting On About Bassists From: Jason Bell Date: Mon, 5 May 1997 12:06:07 +0100 (BST) In my ever searching quest to make a level playing field. I feel I may yet again upset every bassist on the list. The upshot is this. As soon as a bassist is out of the limelight for more than one month he/she will be struck off the publication publicity machine. This doesn't mean that players are not working. Bass Player magazine is one big publicity machine, and one that I gave up with a few months ago, I finally gave all my copies away (from issue 1) and refused to buy and new ones. Once material starts to repeat itself I leave it and work on something new. I haven't seen the actual segment in question, but I feel that articles like this are false and very much down to the writer's faves at that time. I agree with Ben Poole's comment on no exposure to Nick Beggs, but the other side of the coin is, what is Nick doing at the moment ? Is an article on Nick really going to sell this heap of a magazine. The quick answer is no, I admire Nick a great deal, I owe him and Jim Lampi a million thanks for introducing me to the Chapman Stick, if it wasn't for those two etc etc. I also think that real hero's of the bass will never get covered, amateur bassist who sweat it out during nights of the week. All for the *love* of music. I consider myself lucky, I've done what I wanted to do play Chapman Stick meet new musicians and teach other bassists what I know. I have to have a full time job to fund all this, but I think it's worth it. It may be also worth thinking about if you really need to read any magazine to be a bass player. Performing with other people will reap a harvest of knowledge that no magazine can give. My mind hasn't been on bass playing, I get married in five weeks, I'm looking to set up as a professional web designer and I want to record my solo album, it all costs money. He is Jimmy Breslin, a famous NY newspaper journalist. He is also an author. Check out his thick heavy Brooklyn accent! :-) Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #124 From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Mon, 5 May 1997 09:11:14 -0400 (EDT) In Digest 124, BobC writes... > Which brings us to the point - what known bass players today have listed > Mark King as an influence? From: the copse Date: Mon, 5 May 1997 14:48:03 BST Hi L42heads, I mentioned this a while back, but now time is pressing and I wonder if the Digest could help me. I'm writing the final essay of my degree, and it's going to be about how the combination of jazz-funk, pop, and New Age go to make the genius we all know as Level 42, and how differing attitudes to these three things changed their style over the years. There are a couple of things I don't know though. 1. Which band members were most keen on which styles? 2. What did their record company urge them to do, or were they relatively free? 3. Is there anywhere a comprehensive book/website of chords? If anyone can help me with these things I'd be desperately grateful - otherwise I'll have to make them up!! If anyone has any useful information, feel free to e-mail me ! (Winston and you other NY area digesters, check me on that one) Winston, good call on the Lindsey Nelson comment. I was thinking the same thing when I first read that post, since I grew up watching the Mets every summer night. Also, a sincere thank you to all who sent their congratulations on my engagement. It's a wonderful thing. It ranks right up there with seeing Level 42 in concert! Well, I know Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai) does too. I think he's a generally well-respected musician in musicians' circles, but when you're talking 'fashionable' bands, they're going to cite people who have sufficient cred. But perhaps I'm being a little cynical, when Zender and Me'Shell aren't afraid to speak out! It's not the fact that it's sappy (in fact, I never really thought of it as being sappy); it just doesn't move me the right way. > Despite all the dance-oriented music the boys have put out, I've never > seen them dance. Maybe it's better that people know them for their superb > musicianship than for being able to move. Seems, though, that few people > currently in pop/rock/soul actually have musical or vocal skills AND > the ability to move well. A short list of those who I've seen on video > who can: Well, you do get to see a bit of Mike dancing during one of the live gigs (don't recall now whether it was LAW or Guaranteed now). If you get a chance to watch this bit, you'll see that it is better we know them (at least Mike) for the music than the dance :) > sounds very crusty and almost distorted when turned > up. Same goes for Tracie. Interesting--I always liked the phonics on Tracie. A bit dry sounding, but it fits! As for the track order of the two FN versions... I generally don't prefer an ordering that has the hit song(s) at the front. This seems to highlight the "commercial" tracks, and lessen the relevant tracks that don't necessarily directly induce revenue for the record company. Perhaps it's a silly argument...? ------------------------------ Subject: She's gone mad!
