Paul Fucito ------------------------------ Subject: Gary, Time Will Heal,Vegas From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Sat, 3 May 1997 11:26:02 -0400 (EDT) Jeff, yes the Vegas Level Fest thing is still happening. Hope you can make it. Marc, I agree that 'cover tape' project of original songs, that Bruce suggested, sounds like a wonderful idea. I'd lvoe to hear some of the stuff other digest members are doing. I also agree about Gary, he's great in his way, but I still prefer Phil on some of the stuff. I bet Gary purposely tried NOT to sound like Phil on some of the stuff. Wouldn't it be cool to hear Phil's playing on 'Man', and 'If U Were Mine' ? Daniel, "time will heal' is my fave track from the resurgence version of Forever Now. At least of the added one. I admit is a bit sappy, but I guess I'm a sucker for a smooth Lindup track. Well, out of things to say. Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Lindsey Nelson and Mike Lindup do the cha-cha From: country94.3 @ wmjc.com (country94.3) Organization: WMJC Radio Date: Sat, 03 May 1997 12:07:38 -0700 Hey, Micro-Kids: I've seen postings on topics tangentially related to L42, but the best yet belongs to Winston, one of our Top Levelheads. I loved the comparison between Mark King's suit in "Something About You" (and "Leaving Me Now") and Lindsey Nelson's flashy sportcoats. Although I'm a Yankee fan (have been for 20 years,) my first baseball fandom was with the Mets, and I remember oodles of Met broadcasts on Ch. 9 with the "Meet the Met" theme song, then seeing Nelson's jacket du jour, which looked almost like a test pattern. Back to L42 -- of all the videos on the "Level Best" clipfest, "Something About You" had the best running "theme," while "Take Care of Yourself" was a close second, although bittersweet. Even funnier is the buzz cut Mike's sporting in "TCOY," especially as opposed to his Afro-and-moustache outing on "Love Games" eight years previous. Despite all the dance-oriented music the boys have put out, I've never seen them dance. Maybe it's better that people know them for their superb musicianship than for being able to move. Seems, though, that few people currently in pop/rock/soul actually have musical or vocal skills AND the ability to move well. A short list of those who I've seen on video who can: James Brown -- the all-time champ Michael Jackson -- the current champ Janet Jackson -- heir apparent George Michael Daryl Hall (especially in "Say It Isn't So" and "Out Of Touch") David Ruffin Vanessa Williams Michael Hutchence Bobby Brown John Mellencamp Prince (he plays better than he sings, though) Mike Lindup doing his Jerry Lewis thing during "The Sun Goes Down" ("Live at Wembley" video, 1987) does not count. I'd add Paula Abdul, but her voice is thin -- no one would consider her a Randy Crawford. I'd also add my fellow Long Islander, Debbie -- oops, Deborah -- Gibson, but I don't know enough about her work. "Transmit and receive..." I have been wanting to get that off my chest ever since '88. What really upsets me is that "Heaven in My Hands"; a song worthy of being cranked to Max, sounds very crusty and almost distorted when turned up. Same goes for Tracie. However I think THC sounds acceptable. Oh, before I forget, I also heard some comments that SITL had less than perfect sound quality. Maybe so, but much more tolerable than SATS. Have a listen to Lindup's "People"...I always thought it sounded pretty cool. ...it's over. TCOY Bonneville Mark Toronto, Canada ------------------------------ Subject: whatever From: matthew stone Date: Sat, 3 May 1997 18:58:22 -0500 (CDT) I've been reading everyone's feedback of the top bass albums from Bass Player magazine. The only purpose of Top 10, 30, 100, or 500 Lists is to generate controversy. Does anyone really believe that People magazines Most Beautiful People are really the most beautiful people? I say just read them for what they're worth. Besides, if everybody else knew how great Level 42 was, they'd buy the rare albums from all the used record stores. Well, the one that came on May 3). First of all, I don't know what the guy's name was that hosted Saturday Night Live when Level was on. I can see his face introducing them now but he's someone I never knew about when I was eleven years old and I still couldn't tell you who he is. Not an actor or musician. Anyway, I'm sure someone else on the digest knows for sure. I am almost positive this SNL appearance occurred in 1986, if not 1987. Secondly, for Randall who just came back from a visit to the San Fernando Valley where "everyone's car is clean".......You obviously missed seeing MY car! Regarding Forever Now, I also enjoy "Billy's Gone" on RCA than on Resurgence. The bass hits you in the face on the RCA, which I love. I also agree with Winston that the Resurgence track order is out of whack. Maybe it's because I, too, heard the RCA first but still, I have some reasoning. The title track comes at a strange time and scares you right out of your seat with its bombastic beginning. Also, how could they leave off "All Over You" - a great jam!? Anyway, just wanted to share. Angel ------------------------------ Subject: WM US VERSION... From: Paul Fucito Date: Sat, 03 May 1997 20:58:33 -0700 Wow, I must be one of the only people with the American CD of World Machine that actually has the US VERSION strip on it...In fact, they were all over the place when I upgraded my cassette to CD (1989?). Then, I saw them without the strip, and as somebody mentioned last digest, now I don't see any copies at all....... Like I said before, Running In The Family went out of print in the US for a short time and was rereleased in april according to several area record stores who called me to say it was back in print (and of course I was stunned to hear it ever went out). Perhaps Polydor was going to do what Chrysalis and A&M have done to the US market, delete all titles but the greatest hits of any group. Glad to see I wasn't the only one who noticed the poorer quality of the Staring At The Sun album.... I doubt Julian Mendelson screwed it up, everything he produces is tight and crisp... I have not noticed any poor quality on Standing In The Light, and on a different note, my version of Guaranteed Live DOES IN FACT HAVE THAT DAMNED HUM too..... (I said it didn't before...) Well........That's all for now... At This Great Distance... Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Forever Now Versions... From: Paul Fucito Date: Sat, 03 May 1997 21:03:44 -0700 I have the original UK RCA version with no extra tracks, and the UK Resurgence version as well...... The second one is awsome with the extra tracks, but I have one complaint that many of you have also shared in the past... The Resurgence version deletes ALL OVER YOU which is a terrific tune and a chart climber the UK in 1994... If you only get one copy, get the Resurgence, and then search for the ALL OVER YOU singles... Paul
