Hello: Who hosted this Level 42 version of SNL? What year was this? All The Best, TONE. ------------------------------ Subject: Sonic qualities From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Fri, 2 May 1997 09:40:30 -0500 (CDT) I've been away for a little awhile in the sunny state of California, Anaheim to be exact, Disneyland to be more precise. Lovely weather. Didn't find any records stores around. Wouldn't have had the time. Also went to Universal Studios. Something about Hollywood that seems surrealistic. Lovely views of the San Fernando valley from the top of Universal Studios. Killer rides (so the kids say). Everyone's car is so clean. OK, let me get out of my comatose state.... After catching up on digests, I noticed a lot of talk about the sonic qualities of L42 CD's, tapes, and records. I'm going to have to listen to SATS again (on tape). I always thought the sound quality of this release was overbearing. I think that was due to the rather dramatic change of musical styles as compared to their previous release, RITF. You have to admit the opening track on SATS hits you like a ton of bricks! I'll have to listening to it again. I think the best sounding L42 CD's are RITF and Forever Now. As far as early stuff is concerned, I love the sonics on Early Tapes. I have both the LP and the CD of this. I prefer the CD, only because I don't own a turntable. Not bad sounding at all, certainly better than, say, SITL. Maybe even on certain odds days when the sun and stars are misaligned, it could even sound better sonically than WM. (Stwike him, Centuwion!) Kristin - need your snail mail so I can send you a copy of the LMN piano part. Winston and Trillian - tapes are in the mail. And now, a note on the recent election results in Great Britain: Where are you when we need you, Margie Thatcher? (Bloody Labour party!) The return of pure socialism. Right, then! Man! This is turning out to be a great year in music! Anyway, I read it on teletext and they said that beacuse of an argument over the release of "History Revisited" it'll probably be another kind of Mark Hollis-solo-using-the-name- Talk Talk album. Lee Harris and that other guy... what's his name, ah, Paul Webb won't be on this album. Just like Talk Talk's latest album, 'Laughing Stock' (which was great!). Oh, and some Level stuff after all, I also think the sound of SATS is not what it's supposed to be. But I think the problem lies in the pressing-copy (??) beacause on The Remixes and the cd-singles the sounnd is much better. Well, that's it for this session - "You look as happy as a man who thought a cat had done its business on his pie but it turned out it was an extra big blackberry." -- taken from Blackadder the Third. First, I think a letter to Bass Player is in order, but I recommend sending them a letter signed by all digest members. 500 or so voices may speak louder. We should also suggest an album that should have appeared on Bass Player's list. And by the way...it's not like Trace Elliott and Alembic don't do any advertising business with Bass Player, or that outfits like Audiophile don't take out ads in the back of the magazine. And as we (all?) know, they did give Mark a cover story to coincide with the release of Guaranteed. Now, my suggestion for Level 42 bass album would either be A Physical Presence, Level 42, or Mark's Influences CD. Second, BobC: Good to see you! Hey, sometimes I think I'd give anything to be covering an NBA franchise rather than what I am doing now. Then I remember that the Grizzlies, Mavericks, Celtics, Nets, and Sixers (among others) still count as "professional" basketball. Let's get in touch again sometime soon! Third, EWF. Glad to hear someone (GERT) has picked up that disc. Someone mentioned earlier in the week or last week that they were scared away because the album had been produced & produced & produced. My response: so what? If the album is phat (which it is) then just enjoy it for what it is. Fourth, Forever Now +6: If you work from the RCA(UK) release of Forever Now (which had 11 tracks only) and you add the 6 b-sides that appear on the Resurgence/Voiceprint version, then you get the answer to that cryptic "Visionprint Forever Now with 6 new tracks." Fifth, I am heading up to Portland this weekend, and I think I'm going to pick up a little gem at a used store that I spotted ages ago. Maysa Leak has a solo effort with several of the guys from Incognito working with her. Sixth, Marc Dupuis: Thanks for the tape and the newsletter. Now I'm going to have to start looking around for those KG projects myself. For any Kevin Gilbert fans, we are rapidly approaching the first anniversary of his death. I'd encourage his fans to remember him in some way on that day (May 17). He was one of those few to whom the term "musical genius" really applied! Gotta run, chums! From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 02 May 97 12:16:24 EDT Hi Bill, Thanks for the Cover42 tape. Nice job on the J-card! It was nice to see some of our brethren L42 junkies offering their renditions of the boys. Kind of puts a face to the name, in a weird way. A band I play in does Lessons In Love - makes me wish I had submitted that. Oh well, next time. Hey, is there still interest in compiling some of our original stuff? I can submit a CD-R, are we aiming for 1 or 2 songs or 5 minutes worth, or are we not getting that anal? It would be cool to see how diverse our own offerings would be. Or maybe it would just be a disjointed string of incohesive cacophonies (cacophonies?). That would probably please me the most! I always stick up for Gary when the Phil-is-God rhetorics dis my Husband, but I heard LAW (thanks Winston) and I have to say he was thrashing a bit here. I hate to say it, but... I still hold him in "equal though different" status, however, so don't go jumping around screaming "I WIN!! I WIN!!" just yet. I think he settled in nicely on their later live stuff. -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: Blah blah blah, yada yada yada From: Daniel James Organization: Mathsoft, Seattle Division Date: Fri, 02 May 1997 09:22:54 -0700 > 10.00am - Thursday morning, boring morning, nothing new. Search the > web under "Level42 - Mark King" Try to find out about any new releases. > Saw - http://kumo.swcp.com/synth/level42/newswire.html Actually, the newswire on Vince's page is a bit old (although there hasn't really been any new news to put there in awhile, with the exception of the apparent "vaporware" re-release CD's). You're mentioning the Resurgence version, which is the first version of the album that I had (it's got a picture of Mike & Mark on both covers--the back side showing Mark looking as though he just dropped a load). I prefer this version to the RCA, although Tired of Waiting and All Over You are missed (and I prefer the RCA version of Billy's Gone, although I think most people like the Resurgence version). Anyway, enjoy it--the "bonus" tracks, "Play Me", "Past Lives", "Heart On The Line", "Time Will Heal", "Learn to say no", and "The Bends" are all excellent (Actually, Time Will Heal is not one of my favorites, but I love the rest especially "Learn to say no"). Lolita--thanx for the info. While I do like Maysa as a vocalist, I mostly prefer the instrumentals on this album (and I really, really liked the woman who sings "Always There" -- they mentioned her name when it played on the radio, but I don't recall it now). I noticed that the keyboarding work on a few tracks on Tribes Vibes and Scribes remind me a bit of Mike Lindup's work. Also, the bass work on Magnetic Ocean (if I remember right) reminds me a we bit of Stanley Clarke. Good stuff. So if you like Inside Life for it's instrumental work, then that's good enough for me. Dave Mock writes: > My edition, the US print issued by "Resurgence," has been virtually > the only album I've listened to... (Other correspondents can let > you know about the UK version, which I don't have.) I've had both the UK and US versions in my hands, side by side, and there is no difference. (There may be a minor difference in a code on the back of the CD cover, I don't recall.) The booklet and the CD itself are identical, the CD itself was exactly the same, is printed identically, came out of the same presser, and is no doubt from the same run. If you think about it, it makes sense- why go to the trouble of making two different versions of a REISSUE that will only sell to a limited market? Hey, is the June Las Vegas Levelfest still on? From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Fri, 2 May 1997 16:22:27 -0400 (EDT) In Digest #121, Chuck (formerly TamaChuck) writes... > Eric suggests that I organize a DisneyWorldLevelFest in the future. Not a > bad idea, big daddy. Any fellow Floridians wanna help me out on that? First, congratulations on your engagement, Chuck! "The most beautiful woman in the world, both inside and out." Wow, I think we're all looking for HER - I guess the rest of us can quit now. ;-) Second, Eric's suggestion is EXCELLENT! I wanted to attend the upcoming event in Vegas so I could meet some of you, but I only travel to hot, crowded tourist destinations in the "off" season - and besides, I just came back from Tampa (!) and Disney a few weeks ago. Went there to visit friends and celebrate my 37th b-day. I think that the DisneyWorld Levelfest idea is killer, and would attend ANYTIME! It's only a 12-hour drive for me (in NC) and I'll do it at the drop of a hat - this last trip to Disney was #20 pour moi. My next vacation venture was a tentatively-scheduled trip to Vegas next fall/winter, but missing the Levelfest kinda takes some of the sparkle off that idea, and I'd just as soon go back to Florida. Two things: 1) If a Disney Level Fest does get planned, ONLY do it between Labor Day and Memorial Day - NEVER go there during the season! 2) Musicians shouldn't miss Thoroughbred Music's Kapok Tree Pavillion in Clearwater! One of the NY Met's original announcers should be included in that story. His name is Lindsey Nelson. He was known for wearing the most bizarre, multi-colored sports jackets. The Mark King suit would be tame by comparison. Whenever someone wears something to work with lots of colors, we all call them 'Lindsey', and most of them don't have a clue! (damn NY Yankee fans!) I was listening to the Resurgence version of Forever Now, and boy, I really don't like the sequence of tracks. Maybe because I heard the RCA version first. It just doesn't flow as well as the RCA version. Plus, I have to wait too long to hear 'Love In A Peaceful World', and I'm still waiting for 'Tired Of Waiting'. :-( Tampachuck, or should I call you 'cream' now? (C + Roehm, get it?) Congrats, but I told ya' that already. So what are the dates for the Disney/levelfest? Let's get it going!! Zaphod, and all the others who asked for a color/colour copy of the AYGB liner notes: I will have them in the mail on MONDAY. Sorry for the delay, but I had a bit of trouble with the color/colour printer here at the gig. Mike Lombardo & Ethan Bender: Welcome aboard both of you. Ethan, I agree with you, but remember, this is only the opinion of the couple of editors who participated in the poll. Some of which may have never heard Mark King. They should do an article on some of the best bass players you should check out, but mat have never heard of!! Mike, I'm not sure if you can still get the 'Guaranteed Live' Laser in NTSC format, but don't forget to look for the 'Live At Wembley', 'Fait Accompli', and 'Level Best' Lasers. Some of the online video/CD stores may have some still available. I just got a call from UPS. Seems the sample of the Vegas LevelFest hat has arrived! I will pick it up on Monday, and will post a pic of it to the web, for all to see. See y'all next week, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 shouts and some good news From: "CLOUD 9" Date: Fri, 2 May 97 14:33:47 PDT Hey gang, i've been quite for a little while, but I figured I would break my silence and send some shouts, kudos, and some good news out to people. First, I was at my favorite music shop, Compact Disc Warehouse, the other day and was looking through the used jazz section and bought some stuff and then walked over to the 'L' section of the used Rock and Roll stuff, for some unknown reason, and lo and behold I found a Level 42 CD! What really made me happy was that it was the self titled CD and I didn't currently have it. So, I snagged it for $8.99, I am a very happy camper and what's more I listened to it and memories of previously owning this CD came flooding back. I had forgotten how good Heathrow is. Second, I bought a CD by a group called Defunkt, and would have to say that while some of it is a little too hip hoppy/rappy for my tastes (I know, that's a pretty horrid description) the rest of it sorta reminds me of Incognito. If anybody else has their stuff, let me/us know what you think. Thirdly, I saw a Level 42 compilation CD, with 3 pictures of Mark on the bottom of the Front CD jewel cover art and a big Level 42 across the front. It wasn't the Master's series that I've been reading about, but I have no clue what it was....I didn't buy it because it was more than $20. Anybody know what this was? I also got the Gamalon CD from Marc Dupuis and man I gotta say, if you can convince Marc to get some more of these, do so, cuz this is some damn good music going on. Too bad these guys are splitting up...where have I seen that before? (smirk) Lastly, I sent some tapes to everybody's favorite Level 42 resource, Winston if you must know), and he has sent them back to me chock full of music. He's included both Mark's and Mike's solo efforts as well as stuff like the early music, some remixes and other good things. As I told the Winman, I am now on pins and needles awaiting these tapes, I oughta get 'em in a couple of days, I'd imagine. Well fellow Level maniacs that is all from here, Doug
