It's just a tinny production all around. I think this was discussed in the Digest some time ago. All that's wrong with standing in the light is the following: the Album was made in 1983. Vinyl was still common. To master an album for vinyl, you have to alter the signal with high treble (or something like that) to compensate the vinyl deficiencies. Problem in 1983 was: when releasing LPs on CDs, they used the same master tapes... resulting in crappy CDs... like SITL But I think they were re-mastered afterwards, like all other LPs from our boys, including the Early Tapes, remastered by a Dutch guy! (that's why some CDs indicate they are 'digitally remastered') > I was once told that one of Tom Lord Alge's favorite sayings is "You > can't polish a turd." Maybe that's just the lesson I learned/reaffirmed! Not true -> add some tits, nice face (?) and "s(ed)uc(k)tive behavior" (????) result: Spice Girls ;-) About world machine: I saw version with a WHITE stripe (just two black outlines) indicating 'US version', a black stripe is 'Includes extra track' Dirkies And get those files uploaded for the CDROM project!! I don't remember who mentioned it, but I too think that the Spice Girls redoing the 70's is much better than those stupid Gallagher brothers redoing the 60's. BTW, I kinda like "Who Do You Think You Are"... * Somebody mentioned lyrics for a song off The Early Tapes. Well, I'd like to have the lyrics for all the 3 songs on that album. * One more thing about that girl who said she was Boon's daughter came to mind, did she say she was his daughter or that "her uncle was the drummer"? If she said that, she could also have been Paul Gould's kid, right? Does anybody know if he has kids or anything...? * Today (Queen's Day here in the Netherlands - Bea is cool) I stumbled upon a new used vinyl store and found a copy of 'A Physical Presence'. It was for only fl. 2,50 so I immediately bought it. There was more Level 42 stuff, but it was getting more and more crowded and everybody was very interested in our guys (!) ... but anyway, I already have PP on vinyl so if anybody wants it, yu can have it! The only costs will be the shipping costs so email me right away! I know the three tracks that are not on the cd will be on the digest live-cd but somebody might want it...? They also had the video from the Monument tour by Ultravox, but they said they had a few boxes full of old video stuff... maybe even some Level 42!!! Something else, isn't it rather strange that some titles (like Decade by Duran Duran) have been released both on DCC and MD? I thought there were 2 camps between which the record companies had to choose - Sony or Philips. Oh well... Bye now! Just to put my two cents in, my CD version (the original European version with Dream Crazy, Coup D'Etat, and I Sleep On My Hat (er, Heart)), purchased domestically in 1987, has the black stripe "Includes Extra Track" on it, and the store I bought it at had both version, more European than US. I remember this distinctly, because I told someone else who just grabbed a copy while I was standing there looking at mine (e-gads, two L42 albums sold in the same US store on the same day!) that they should get the "Extra Track" version. Apparantly, Dirkies skipped over my long-winded diatribe about the origins of the CD standards many Digests ago (interested nerds can look up Digest volume 97 #2. This was the era of the Joe Parrington show, so there were a lot of long posts then.) To my esteemed, respected but incorrect friend: It wasn't Sony that had the 12" audio discs in their labs, it was Philips. See, they were already manufacturing and selling (along with Pioneer, their Japanese partner in _that_ endeavor) 12" optical discs- the LaserDisc. Since all that technology was already developed, running and selling, Philips thought it would be an easy deal- after all, all you were doing was changing the nature of the stored information on the disc, everything else was in place. Sony, at that time, was doing very little (if anything) with the 12" format. When Philips presented Morita with the idea, he was receptive, but had a different vision. He wanted a format that could be portable to use in a Walkman-like device, and he wanted an in-dash car player. That ruled out a 12" disc! A portable format also ruled out a gas laser- and the only alternative was a laser diode. At that time, the only portion in the spectrum that could be inexpensively generated was in the infrared region, which meant a fairly long wavelength and fairly low information density. It was Morita, not his wife, who was in love with a particular Von Karajan performance of the 9th. This performance was 74 minutes, and Morita wanted it all to fit on one side of the new medium. Given that the wavelength of the read device was unchangeable and the playback time had to be 74 minutes, the size of the disc ended up being 12 CM. And Morita-san got his performance, his Discman and his car player... and we got the silver disc as we know it today. That's as short as I can make it! Wow, I'm glad to see the CDR project coming together- I'll go jump over to the site and check it all out. Can I come back in? :) Haven't been on the digest in QUITE a long time, though I've spoken to a lot of people one-on-one in recent months... I've often told Winston that I would reappear sometime soon, but after yesterday's digest and Doug Ross' request of my tapes, I figured now is as good of a time as any. So where have I been? Well, the job I have kept me away. I cover the New Jersey Nets (insert joke here) for the newspaper I write for, so I was on the road quite a bit and going through the grind of the daily beat. I also got engaged and have a great fiance who takes up any free time I have... But I read the digest everyday and visited all the sites (Vince's and Winston's kick) and I'm still the same Level nut I've always been. Still got my collection of Level goods, which I used to think was huge but now I think is nothing compared to everyone else's :) As for my videos, I'm sorry to say that I don't currently have the means to dub - though I will after I get married on Sept. 28... So, I'll probably put them back out after my honeymoon (my poor wife). And to Vince and the almighty John Shuford, I haven't forgotten that I still owe you guys some stuff. Also, I'd like to inform you guys that I have a work-related program called Lexis/Nexis that can call up articles from all around the world on any topic going back to the 1980's. So, I've dug up a ton of Level 42-related articles, current and past. If any of you Web Page owners would like to have at these stories, let me know. I'll get 'em to ya for everyone to read. Hope everyone is well, BobC P.S. What was Joe Parrington thinking, anyway? P.S.S. Thanks to Eric for keeping this thing going everyday. His efforts I've always appreciated. ------------------------------ Subject: More on US Version of WM From: Paul Fucito Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 17:38:54 -0700 If you look at the inside booklet of the LEVEL BEST CD, you can see the pictures of the album covers...Look at World Machine...See the strip accross the bottom right....? From: Paul Fucito Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 17:50:17 -0700 Since we are on the subject of poor sound quality, anybody else notice that the Staring At The Sun album doesn't sound quite right? I first had it on cassette and thought the tape was not high fidelity, then on the CD itself, the songs just don't sound crystal clear like Running In The Family and the prior albums... It sounds like they cut back too much treble on many of the songs... This I have noticed on every version I have heard of the album....Anyone agree? Disagree? Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Us Youngens (Digest #114) From: Mysterio71 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 18:10:21 -0400 (EDT) Level Fans, I'm still waiting for a word on the CD re-issues. WHEN ARE THEY COMING OUT? Oh, by the way, Bill Wilson, sorry for the late response. I'm one of the young ones you were talking about: I love Level 42 so much, I can't put it in words (even though I don't have The Early Tapes or AYGB yet). I'm only 16 years old and Level 42 is the only thing I listen to...literally! You see, I got into Level 42 with my early love for the 80's. I didn't really get into buying albums until 1989. At that time, I bought stuff like The Ghostbusters Soundtrack, Paul Simon, and Wang Chung. Then, years later (1993 -94), VH-1 started airing the program The Big 80's. From The Big 80's, my first obsession was Thomas Dolby. I listened to Dolby's stuff until early 1995. Then, I caught the video for S.A.Y. by Level 42. Luckily, I caught it on tape. The more I watched it, the less I liked Dolby and the more I liked Level 42. Around May or June of 1995, I bought my first Level 42 CD...Level Best! At first, I only like S.A.Y. and hated everything else ( I am ashamed to say that) Next, a month later, I caught the video for L.I.L. on VH-1 and noticed that it was also on my Level Best CD, so I started listening to that a lot too. After a while (few weeks) I started under-going the Level 42 Effect ( having their music grow on you). I started loving other songs such as The Sun Goes Down, To Be With You Again, The Chant has Begun, Take a Look, and Running In The Family. I decided that I should expand my horizons. The next CD of theirs I bought was Running In the Family. After under-going the Level 42 Effect, I started loving EVERY song on that album. At this point, Level 42 became my favorite band. My next purchase was Standing In the Light which grew on me real quick as I succomed to the greatness of songs such as Out of Sight, Out of Mind, Standing in the Light, Dance on Heavy Weather, and The Machine Stops. My trip to Toronto in Feb. of 96 bought me True Colours and Staring at the Sun which I couldn't find here in the US. True Colours that winter became my favorit album. I then got Guaranteed which had a noticeable impact on me. Keep In mind that even though I didn't have many L42 CDs, I was so much in love with them that I could not stop listening to them and only them. This Christmas I finally got the CDs: Word Machine (World Machine is now one of my favorite all time Level 42 songs), Live At Wembly, Forever Now, and The Remix Collection. I was very dissapointed to see that I Sleep On My Heart ( another one of my all time favorite Level 42 songs), Dream Crazy, and Coup d'tat (sp?) were not on my WM album. Someone tell me...What kind of song is Dream Crazy? Fast? Slow? Funky? etc. Also, how different is I Sleep's remix from its original? Well, I still need to get AYGB ( which I don't really know how to do) and The Early Tapes ( which will be a challenge; It's no where to be found in the US) Anyway, even though I've only been listening to L42 for a couple years, I'm sure I love them just as much as you older guys. In fact, this was my first Level experience. They played 'Something About You' only. I thought they sounded good (now that I have a copy of it on tape). My family and I were watching and this is what got us into the group so it was definitely a good enough performance to get people interested in what else they could do. The audience did not go wild screaming their heads off or anything but they seemed to like them by the sound of the applause. Yes, I did say I have this on tape but I don't have the means to record it for you I'm sorry to say. I've looked for "Forever Now," since reading here it even existed. For so long I could not find anything on L42 until now on-line. I finally found a store that will order this CD for me. Is it good? Enjoy reading all of your comments, although you all seem to know so much more than I on this wonderful group. Saw them in ' 87 as opening act for Tina Turner here in Augusta, Georgia. Truely not indicitive of their music. I saw them in concert the following Tuesday and they were absolutely disgusted with the whole SNL thing. They wouldnt even discuss it. When I saw it, I said "I paid money to see this???", but I was very pleasantly surprised when I attended the concert on Tuesday. They didnt say exactly what went wrong, but I think that the sound was all screwed up, and maybe the bass wasnt coming through very well. I do still have the recording somewhere, but it would take some searching. I just chalked up the whole thing to terrible amps and what nots..I didnt care for the show in the first place, so I was a bit biased. I asked a while ago for bass suggestions and I got a few, but now I need to know what features I need; remember I know didley about it...something about the neck, pickups, etc. Thanks.
