Gary Clail is a rapper from Bristol he was part of the Tackhead Sound System (Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc, Skip MacDonald (now Little Axe), they all made a loud noise and were brilliant. The band would play live and Gary would rap through a megaphone into a mike, eploed reverbs of the snare drum and generally make a racket, wonderful. -- Jason Bell EMAIL : xdr44 @ dial.pipex.com HTTP : http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/estate/xdr44 "Where We Are Going, Is How We Get There" Robert Fripp ------------------------------ Subject: Crystal Palace OpenAir gig From: Alex Green <106507.1775 @ compuserve.com> Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 08:42:15 -0500 Hi everyone > Did anyone in the Digest go to the Crystal Palace OpenAir gig where the > boys played on the same stage as Squeeze, Gary Clail ( who? ), etc ?? Just > wanted to know what people thought about it. This wasn't my favourite > concert ( Hammersmith Odeon was.. ) but just asking . (Mark Hughes) I went to the Crystal Palace OpenAir gig, I remember it being a very hot day. I enjoyed it very much (Who was Gary Clail?). I think the sound was a bit lost as it was open air. I didn't get see all of "Love Games" (encore) because my mates insisted that they wanted to miss the crowds for the trains. However I thought the Hammersmith gig was better, I don't know why (no pun) I think it was the atmosphere. My fav gig was the Royal Albert Hall as it was the last (gutted). I was talking to a bloke at work a couple of years ago and we got on to the subject of music and he asked me what I thought of Squeeze and I said I see them at Crystal Palace to see Level 42 and I thought they were good. Then he said he was Glen Tilbrook's step-dad (I think he is the vocals.) He said he was also at the gig and said that backstage was really posh etc.. Anyway thats my claim to fame. Level 42 Unplugged would have been great to see. Heres my list: 1. SAY. 2. If you were mine. (Why wasn't this a single) 3. The sun goes down. 4. Why are you leaving. 5. Dune Tune. 6. Romance. 7. 2 B with U Again. 8. Running in the Family. 9. Children Say. 10. Forever Now. 11. Lesson in Love (Intresting) I wonder how Mark would play an acoustic bass, what I mean is can you slap an acoustic bass? if so does it sound good?? See ya, Alex Green ------------------------------ Subject: Nick update From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 08:46:54 -0500 (EST) Hello All, Just to let you know the good news, I have secured a copy of the Nick Heyward disc, Hard Days Nick. You may all stop looking for it now. Thanks to everyone who offered me suggestions and to those who in fact, did look for the disc with a special thank you to BENEDICT POOLE for all his help. The machine stops, John M ------------------------------ Subject: Uh, what's that song? From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 08:46:56 -0500 (EST) I may have discovered my least favorite Level 42 song! No, not The Chinese Way but rather, Why Are You Leaving? Sounds like a Bill Murray lounge lizard vocal. The music and instruments are very good, the melody is good, the recording is good, the "sound'" is good. Actually the only bad thing about it are the vocals. I'm not Mark bashing but come on, it's definately not one of his finer vocal tracks. Yes, yes, I know, I know, I can't do better, but still, I just thought I'd toss this out to the digest. Did the title of this song come up when during the performance Mark asked, "Why Are You Leaving"? Not sure if we've visited this song before but I'll err on the side of duplicity. Let the debates begin!!! The machine stops. John M ------------------------------ Subject: MARK IS STILL KING OF THE ISLE From: Morgan Roussel Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 18:37:42 +0100 MARK IS STILL KING OF THE ISLE UNS Features Fans of Mark King are in for a treat next Monday night (April 29) when The Pier, Meridian Broadcasting's flagship arts programme, broadcasts an edition devoted entirely to his life and work giving viewers a unique opportunity to hear some of the music that will launch him on his new solo career. According to music journalist David Hepworth, the former Level 42 guitarist and lead singer is "the kind of pop star that you would send home to your mother, and know that she would be enormously impressed with him". Graham Holmes, his old music teacher at Cowes High School, thinks "he was on a superior level because he could rearrange traditional sounds in a new way." Mark King, hailed by many across the world as the best bass guitarist of his generation, comes in for a great deal of praise from the many people who have been associated with him - both on a personal and professional level. King, now aged 37, returive Isle of Wight in 1988 after ten years in London. When he first arrived in the capital he expected it to be "chock-a-block with the most amazing musicians." It was, and the young Mark was about to join their ranks. "I always wanted to be a drummer," says Mark, nursing one of his beloved bass guitars in his studio in Ryde. It was this passion for percussion that prepared him for the slap-bass style of guitar-playing that was to become his trademark: "it was easier for me to perceive. I was forced to drum on something else." He hooked up with the other three original members of Level 42 - Phil and Boon Gould and Mike Lindup - and together the four jammed their hearts out every Monday night at the Guildhall School of Music, where Lindup was a student. The band hadn't needed a vocalist until they signed up with Elite Records who encouraged them to try working with one. But things just didn't feel right for Mark. He says: "This was our band, we didn't want some Herbert coming in and taking all the glory." So he took it upon himself, and sang Level 42 into the charts with 'Love Meeting', and later, with Polydor, 'Love Games.' With Mark's distinctive thumb riff, the band had found themselves a cult following. "The Brit funk movement had found a champion band. It got us a slot on Top of the Pops, which was pretty exciting at the time." This success was quickly followed up by tracks 'Lessons in Love' and 'Something About You', putting King and his band firmly on the map. Two new members were drafted in to replace the departed Gould brothers in 1989, Gary Husband (drums) and Alan Murphy (guitar), inevitably bringing with it a change in sound and direction. And King recalls how, after Alan Murphy's death "nothing would ever be the same." Now Mark is putting together a solo album, an amalgamation of all he has learned to date, a chance for him to demonstrate his competence not just on guitar, but as a vocalist, keyboard player and drummer. "Technology makes it all possible," he smiles. 'King of the Isle' will be broadcast on ITV at 10.40pm on Monday, April 29 across the South and South East of England. Notes to Editors: 1. The Pier is an Antelope South production for Meridian Broadcasting. King of the Isle is directed by Damon Thomas, Niki Hinman is the series editor and Claire Lewis is programme executive. The programme's incidental music was also written by Mark King. 2. There will no charge for using this copy. TCOY, Morgan -- Level 42 Fan Page: http://web.semaphore.fr/level42/ E-mail: mailto:morgan42 @ club-internet.fr ------------------------------ Subject: Like a hareem in a desert scene From: J Shuford Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 10:28:10 -0800 (PST) Well, this may not be MUCH "news" but I can lend a confirmation to JoeP's question (and the subsequent answer by others) on the line in "All She Wants". I just saw "The English Patient" last night, and there is a scene where the English archaeologists are being teased over their pronunciation of "harem", which they say "hareem". By the way, this movie (unlike so many others) had absolutely no discernible connection with Level 42... :-) On another note, I was glad to see John (what is it with all these Johns already?) mention Kevin Gilbert's CD "Thud." I've seen it around town in a few places recently with the attached "Kashmir" EP. If anyone is interested in this disc, let me know. Kevin was a terrific guy, unbelievably talented, and sorely underappreciated! Finally, I can't provide much help on the promo version of "Standing in the Light" that was spoken of yesterday, but I found something I thought rather unusual recently with regard to this release. I have a promo copy of the A&M version of "Standing..." which features the four boys in their awful early 80's clothes, looking over a balcony next to an escalator. That's not unusual cover art, really, because I've also seen the regular album release (not promo) with the same work. What IS unusual, at least to me, is that I also found a copy of the Polydor release of "Standing..." on vinyl (in never-before-opened packaging) that features that same photo artwork and NOT the yellow-lit shot of them where Mark has his shirt sleeves rolled up. There are some differences between the Polydor and the A&M releases on the back as well, as far as credit listings (or lack thereof). Anyway, I had never seen a Polydor version using the same artwork as the A&M version. Does anyone else have a Polydor copy with the same artwork as the A&M version? I would highly recommend it to everyone... Wow! Someone ELSE who knows about this record? It's KILLER. Kevin is an outstanding writer. I discovered the CD by accident in a used bin, played it and fell in love with it. One thing that struck me was that I really liked the _sound_ of the recording- and upon reading the liner notes, found out why- it was recorded on an old Neve console (I was weaned on a Neve!), and there's just something about the way those boards sound, nothing quite like 'em... On the AYGB color liners- Boy, if everyone here on the Digest hasn't seen them, you're really missing something. They are an absolute work of art! I hope Winston puts them up for everyone to download soon. On the forthcoming reissues from PolyGram, has there been any talk of remastering and/or remixng of some of the older recordings? It sure would be great to have a less-bright L42 and better-sounding True Colors and SITL along with all the new tracks. Loz? I've received another 10 AYGB orders, and I should be filling _everyones'_ AYGB order this month! (Everyone thank Adam C. for this.) However, I really need some special person's help. Tonight, I received this in my mail box. . . Randall Collins wrote. . . > I am interested in AYGB being recorded on a tape. Here's the info you > requested: > > email name: rcol > email address: rcol @ ix.netcom.com Here's the rub- I don't own a tape deck! So could I please get one of you fantastic people out there with a copy of AYGB and a tape deck to get in touch with Randall for me. I'd be very appreciative. And, just for good measure, anyone who wants a copy of AYGB, but hasn't gotten in touch with me yet- please do! My email address is Zaphod @ hub.ofthe.net. Please put AYGB ORDER in the subject field.
