EXCELLENT CONCERT, just as I remembered it from The Hague where I was with my brother. Mr.Pink ROCKS ! What I noticed: at the beginning of HIMH John Thirkell is _not_ playing his trumpet. He is faking ! He only starts playing after the first TATATATaa's.He plays the higher pitched parts. Did anyone else notice ? I also read Bass Player regularly. That magazine is definitely funded by its advertisers, and I think it shows in the writing. My first impression is that, since not many of Mark's recordings are in print at the moment, noone from Polydor, RCA, Resurgence, or anyone else was ringing the phone off the hook to get a Mark King album on the list. Of course, Trace Elliot is a big advertiser in BP, but I think they wouldn't stand to gain as much anyway. Still, I think we should send a letter to BP. With everyone's agreement, we could submit the letter with a byline listing at least the name of the Level 42 digest, and at most our names. Then again, maybe we don't want to draw _that much_ attention to ourselves. Both arguments are valid. Anyway, my point is, Bass Player is not a journalistic "trade rag", as it portends to be. It's a business venture, and the advertisers are looking for an ROI they can be happy with. That's why MK didn't appear. -- -Will "Shoeshine boy by day, crime fighter by night" ------------------------------ Subject: CDs, The Doors From: "dirk.vael" Date: 29 Apr 97 13:55:56 Konnichi wa! The Philips - Sony CD story is a bit more complicated. Philips DID invented the CD concept in the early 70s, but had insufficient dosh to develop it. Sony was also researching the optical audio carrier but was afraid of different standards (in the beginning, they had 12" CDs in their labs!!!), so they decided to cooperate and that's how the CD came to earth... BTW, it was the wife of the big Sony boss who was decisive on the actual 12cm CD format. She wanted the 9th of Beethoven on a single disc, so since that symphony was 74 minutes, we're still stuck with this inconvenient 74m format. Listening yesterday to APP (Hi Lars-Ove!! ;-), I noticed that '88', at the end of Mike Lindups 'say we goodnight'-keyboard-solo, there is a short part identical to the Doors' "Riders in the storm" keyboard solo. Anyone else noticed? For the rest: A CDR can contain more than 74 minutes! the pauses are not included in the 74m constraints. Nice! Wes: your heavy package is underway to Utah Lars-Ove: I need to know about those 1:15 minutes Dr. Dre: I'm eagerly awaiting that list Afzal: browsing my tapes... Mr. One Night Stand @ Cito: your list would be cool too ;-) Dirkies ------------------------------ Subject: 8-Track? From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 29 Apr 1997 12:14:40 -0400 (EDT) Hey Bill, I have 2 cassette singles, but no 8 tracks tapes. I doubt that Level ever had anything on 8 track. Funny story, when I got my first stereo, an all in one deal, my mom & older sister had to talk me out of getting one with 8 track. They convinced me that cassettes were the future. Lucky for me they were. (I'm not THAT old, but 8-track was still around in the early 80's, when i got my first stereo) Claude, Yes The Jamaica Boys did release a second album, but the name escapes me at the moment. Sorry. Lolita, If you talk about the #&$ bassline in The Machine Stops one more time, I'm gonna' scream!!! (ha,ha,ha) Maybe they never played it live for a reason? Gert, I also think Joe Vannelli is great. Always been a big Gino Vannelli fan, especially the tune 'Apaloosa', which reminds me of level 42 with it's great bass & drum groove. tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Who was first? From: Jeff Grous Date: Tue, 29 Apr 1997 09:37:50 -0700 Heya's! Andre (quoting Randall) writes: > > >... Philips did invent the CD after all! > > > > ..in conjunction with Sony! In fact, the first CD player ever was the > > CDP-101. > > Nope, the CD100 by Philips was first, introduced early 80's at the Firato > show in (where else ?) Holland. Actually, you are both correct. Sony and Philips co-developed the format, and both agreed to debut their first products at the same time. In the United States, the CDP-101 shipped and was on the shelves slightly ahead of the Magnavox FD-1000 (Philips at that time had NO brand recognition in the US, so they marketed under their Magnavox brand). Apparently in Europe, Philips (understandably) got the jump on their Japanese co-conspirator! The idea was to have the products debut everywhere simultaneously, but logistics, production schedules and other variables meant that some products got to some markets first, and vice-versa. You know, This is weird about the blackstripe US version of World Machine. My copy is, of course, is an original import- it says, "Includes Extra Track" in the black stripe. And I distinctly recall that in my store the versions of World Machine I stocked had a black stripe that said "US Version" in it. I also recall that we bought these domestically, from Polydor. Am I mistaken? I called a friend this morning, and asked about his copy- he said it doesn't have the black stripe on it. My guess on this is that earlier US runs of WM had the stripe, and that it got dropped on later versions- because I do remember seeing that on domestic copies. Anyone? It might not sound much to the world today, but I remember liking it a lot in 82. The album is called "From the Tearooms of Mars to the Hell Holes of Uranus". There was also another single, "Eastern Girls" (not on the album). After that single no one has heard of the band. /Farbror Frans - http://www.lls.se/~frans ------------------------------ Subject: Bass Player mag nigglies From: "Julian Arnold" Date: 29 Apr 1997 12:55:18 -0700 Hi, Yesterday Kdog wrote: > So this weekend my Bass Player Mag subscription arrived in the mail. > The cover article is "30 Essential Bass Albums" as picked by BP's staff. > So I put the girls down for their nap, and settle down for a sure triumph > of our heros (after all, World Machine should at least be in the top 5). > Guess what gang - NO MENTION OF L42 at all!!! I don't have my copy yet, but you just tickled on a thorn that's been wedged in my side since I started subscribing to them 2 years ago. I'm always impressed by the knowledge and tips I read in the mag, very professional, great tabs and technical workshops. However during those 2 years, never has either Mark King or Level 42 even had a paragraph of exposure. Quite dissapointing when you consider that I've met non-Bass/L42 fans who are aware of Mr King's work. Sad. Jules. P.S. Any word on those elusive/mysterious Polydor re-issues yet? You got a witness here, pal! I am, indeed, going to e-mail Karl Coryat about this issue, but just complaining that OUR favorite bassist wasn't included won't do any good - they're getting that from EVERYBODY, I'm sure. These picks were all from the BP advisory board and editorial staff. I intend to suggest that they do a similar survey, but ask the readership for OUR essential picks. If everybody would do that en masse, maybe it'll come to be. Carl seems fairly responsive. I gave it all the extra bass boost I could muster with the receiver's dynamic bass expander, plus all the CD player could offer by setting the DSP to DISCO and putting the equalizer all the way up and the reverb next to nothing. Know what I found? That I could punch up the low end, but the disc sounds like crap in general. It's just a tinny production all around. I was once told that one of Tom Lord Alge's favorite sayings is "You can't polish a turd." Maybe that's just the lesson I learned/reaffirmed! Sigh! My american cd: Polydor 829 627-2 DOES have "US-VERSION" printed across the bottom right of the cover.. This was most likely done to signify that at one time, there were two versions of the album in the states..The very first release in America WAS the UK version in 1985. I have heard all of the tracks that were deleted and although I wish they remained on the US Version, I still think the US Version fits well by including Hot Water and The Chant Has Begun.... Polygram felt it would sell better, and Hot Water just missed the 40 mark on the US singles charts so it was a success... The US Version contained three charting singles: Something About You, Hot Water & Leaving Me Now, while the title track had some modest success as well. For the US market, it faired well... Personally, I think I Sleep On My Heart and Dream Crazy would've been readily accepted by the US market, but...I don't work for Polygram..... PAUL ------------------------------ Subject: L42 CD-ROM project - MAJOR NEWS From: The Bassman Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 10:31:37 +0100 (BST) Hello to one and all! Finally, after a lot of setting up, and in co-operation with dIrKiEs, I am pleased to announce that the Level 42 CD-ROM project is about to take off! Now then folks, we need your help. We want all your pictures, MIDI files, sound files, video files, text files etc..... Obviously they need to have a level 42 connection, but basically we want everything. Things have to be done in an organised way, so there are 'rules' associated with this project. Firstly, I have set up a website which contains all the information you should need. This includes: - the types of files we are looking for - the format of filenames - the format of the text description that should accompany each file - how the whole project should work The website also contains thumbnails of all the images uploaded to the FTP site. The thumbnails allow you to see which images have already been submitted to the project. We only need one copy of each file. Something similar will be set up for the other file types, although only the text descriptions will probably be available. So then...point your browser here for the latest project news ************************************************ http://www.york.ac.uk/~mjt101/lev_42/cdtop.htm ************************************************ Please DO NOT put a link to this site from any other web pages. This site is ONLY for the use of digest members. You can, of course, add it to your bookmarks. The FTP site, where all data should be sent, has been generously donated by Vince Mora. It is located at ftp://ftp.swcp.com/pub/synth/incoming/lev_42/ Again, do not put a link to here from any web page, but you can bookmark it. There is a link between the website and the FTP site in case you can only remember one web address!!! Both the web and FTP sites are "hidden", so you will need to know the address in the first place to access the files. Neither can be found by simply browsing around. We don't want those in the outside world to know we are doing this!! One last thing - the website is updated manually, so there will be a bit of a delay in getting new files onto the website. I know there are a lot of 'regulations' regarding file names etc, but these are intended to to help things run smoothly. Cheers! TCOY, Mark. I tried to Email Bob some time ago, but have not heard back from him. I'm sure he's been deluged with requests, and I would rather not bother him about it. Still, I'd really like to get my hands on those videos, even if they are third or fourth generation copies. So, if anyone can take the time to dub their copies (NTSC) for me, I'd be OH SO HAPPY. Of course, I will reimburse you for the expense or we can arrange a trade for some of my own goodies. Incidentally, a friend of mine said he had once seen Level 42 perform as musical guests on an episode of "Saturday Night Live". I wonder if anyone on the digest has seen that episode. I'm curious as to what they played and how they went over (my friend said it was not one of their finest moments...) -Doug Ross dross @ niji.or.jp
