Now we are talking antique!!!!! PS Many thanks to Matt for the brilliant T-SHIRT. PPS Zap when do we get our CD's sent???? PPS Can we stop talking about the Spice Girls now. In the UK unless you don't have any hair around your private parts they aren't even worth talking about!!! Anyone who expected a mail from me mail me. Checked hit Combo remix: just the vocals are like the original, all the rest is replaced by much cooler instruments thx Dirk "It's time for us to go" ------------------------------ Subject: Bass Player Mag's greatest bass albums From: "Kelvin A. Levels" Date: Mon, 28 Apr 97 08:32:37 CDT So this weekend my Bass Player Mag subscription arrived in the mail. The cover article is "30 Essential Bass Albums" as picked by BP's staff. So I put the girls down for their nap, and settle down for a sure triumph of our heros (after all, World Machine should at least be in the top 5). Guess what gang - NO MENTION OF L42 at all!!! They even had each of the staff pick five or six additional albums, still no mention. An absolute pisser!!!! You know, you'd think a staff of bass audiophiles would at least mention Mark King as having SOMETHING worthwhile to contribute. Maybe I should cancel my subscription - better yet, I think letters to the editor EN MASSE are in order, can I get a witness? Kdog ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Roger=Vocoder? The earliest use I have in my collection is on Roger Miller's version of "Lock, Stock, and Teardrops", which has to date back to the late 1950s/early 1960s. When Joe Smith said they sounded good together but SHITE solo I remembered this thing on TV - it was the first appearance of the Osmonds on Andy Williams - again good together - PANTS solo. Anyway my brother remembers hearing Mr. Pink in a disco on the last episode of Juliet Bravo. A word on the re-issues - apparently Polydor have NO plans to release these remasters in the near future - I presume this means over the next month - so it'll be June at the earliest. P.S. If anyone has any bass tabs for any of the songs from The Early Tapes or Level 42 - I would like to hear from you... P.P.S. Microsoft Word Frames - Screwed if you use 'em - F*CKED if you don't. This was the inspiration of my first mention of this new hi-end MD recorder. The magazine is called "Stereo" and it _is_ in German. > >... Yeeaah, that was :" I want to be your man".......I must have a 12" of it somewhere in this mess.......the song sucks, but hey it brings back some _VERY_ nice memories. They had a small hit with "I like the way" in 1982. VERY much influenced by L42, Shakatak etc. Got the 12" on my turntable right now. Groovy ! The bassplayer and drummer are trying very hard to immitate theis L42 collegues, and the piano(keyboard)player is a straight copy of what Shakatak used to do...... Did they make any albums ? MM was part of a project called "Jamaica Boys" in the late 1980's. I found one LP a few months back, and I was wondering if they released anything else? Thanks for your help. Claude C. crzylife @ total.net ------------------------------ Subject: Vocoder, SITL Bassline From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Mon, 28 Apr 1997 13:55:34 -0700 Yo! * Another song that uses vocoder is Soho by Incognito. The song is on the Inside Life CD, and Bluey is doing the vocoder thing. It sounds pretty cool. * The bass sound in Standing In The Light is definitely too trebly for me. I love many of the songs on the CD, but they would be so much better with a deeper bass sound. Prime example, one of my all time favorite basslines in any Level 42 song is The Machine Stops, especially toward the end where he and Mike are totally jamming. The bass sound is so muffled you can't really hear how well he is going off. My biggest non-fulfilled wish regarding the boys is to hear a live version of The Machine Stops, but they never performed it live. Oh well. About the 'bonustracks': When the Ben Liebrand It's Over-mix started, I thought for one moment: this is not Level 42 but the ART OF NOISE, but then, after a few seconds the 'original' It's Over music starts. Great mix. Ben Liebrand Hitcombo II: I don't know how you managed to do this, but it's a beautiful mix! So: thanks a lot! You're a great 'burner'! BTW: my 10 year-old Philips 471 CD-player has no problems with the 73:29 minutes of the CDr. (It also had no problems with the American AYGB-version of Andre!) Andre: I hope you'll get well soon. Loz: Please send me a Mail with you address. I want to order another biography.
