From: Will Greer Organization: Elmore's Tamale Factory Date: Sun, 27 Apr 1997 13:03:15 -0500 This is from the Bass Player Magazine web site. I hope it's useful to some of you in Cali. : Los Angeles-area bassists who had come to rely on the L.A. branch of : The Bass Centre may have been surprised to discover the retail outlet's : recent demise. The store abruptly closed in January due to financial : difficulties, leaving a sizable void for bassists in the music heavy : city. But former Bass Centre manager Long Ly has hustled to meet demand : with a brand new specialty shop for bassists. The L.A. Bass Exchange : opened its doors for business in the first week of March and is planning : a Grand Opening Celebration Clinic for mid-April. (Watch this space for : more info.) If you're in southern California and want to check it out, : the LA Bass Exchange is located at 19526 Ventura Blvd., in Tarzana. You : can also check them out on-line at www.bassexchange.com. -- -Will "Shoeshine boy by day, crime fighter by night" ------------------------------ Subject: A Message To The Bass-O-Philes From: Jason Bell Date: Sun, 27 Apr 1997 19:14:25 +0100 (BST) > Case in point "Rio Funk" - a Lee Ritenour tune Marcus plays on (also > available on a GRP anthology). Marcus' The Sun Don't Lie is a monster > must-have CD for bass enthusiasts, and is included on the "30 Essential > Bass Albums" feature in this month's Bass Player magazine. Sadly, no > Level 42 album made the list, but Aja, Heavy Weather, and Sgt. Pepper's > did! First of all, once you've all learnt 'Rio Funk' then go and learn 'Run For Cover' on the David Sanborn album 'Voyeur'. Secondly. The content on some of the bass player titled albums are only what I could call "Less Filling". Over the last five years I think I sold my entire GRP collection for being to calm and far too calculated. I think the only bass player album I would recommend is 'World Diary' by Tony Levin. This album has feel, emotion and real character. I think it's time to return to the 'song as the first priority' type thing please. I was booted out of more seesions a few years ago for 'doing the slapping thing'. Please use in moderation. Thanks. I remember listening to a radio station in Atlanta (any Atlanta area Levelheads remember the great 'POWER 99' - before it became known as '99X'? They used to play a bit of our boys, along with Go West and our other faves, too - one of the more progressive Top 40 stations I've heard). Anyways, back in the late 80s, this station - like others - used jingles that featured the vocoder. I thought these were some of the most "exciting" sounding jingles I'd ever heard! They were done in 2 and 3 part harmony, too! You just don't hear stuff that sounds that good in our present-day, grunge-infested world. I'm told we'll NEVER hear that kind of stuff again - that we've "come too far to go back to that"; we've "crossed the point of no return" (radio people tell me this). Oh, Arjan - I remember that Roger song - "I Wanna Be Your Man". I didn't care much for the song, either, but I love the vocoder, too! OK EVERYONE: A burning question on my mind for quite some time: Is there a term for the synthesizer or machine that delays the echo in songs? Listen to the Remix of Lessons In Love from the Remixes CD - do you know what I'm talking about? I love that effect, and wish I heard it in more songs these days. It's another thing that grunge songs don't deliver for me. So, an actor was brought in; there is a bit where the band are lined up playing, wearing black and in shades, as I recall, and you can clearly see the guitarist is not AM. Just my four'penneth! "I know".......CABLE TV! Now I don't know whether our stateside cousins have "The BOX" channel, but if you don't, I'll explain..... It's kind of an interactive TV jukebox.....They list the songs...you dial up and input the song number on your phone. Well, I waited 20 minutes for the groups that began with "S".....and what do you know? STRIKE! I picked up the phone, dialled the number in excitement.....It was still ringing, then from my TV I heard a VERY familiar Piano Peace.......TWAS STRIKE!!!! It was if they knew I was calling up!! I turned the TV up as far as it could go, turned my stereo on (hooked up to the TV) and blasted "I've got Peace"! My conclusions: It's a GOOD song!!! Made me burst with Pride!!!! If you haven't heard it, basically it's a catchy dance track that samples the Mike Lindup solo piano bit at the end of "Leaving Me Now". For the rest of the day, I loaded my CD with 42 and it all came flooding back! Ahhhhhhhh BISTO! If you have the "BOX" channel in the UK, it's number 275......just to save you time!!! I now have Peace on my mind!!! Jonny
