Are you talking about L42 albums or any other things? I don't think any L stuff has been releaed on MD (Andre? Dirkies?) but Sony/Columbia has released lots of albums on MD. My advice is this. Don't bother buying pre-recorded MD's. Stick with the CD's, or DAT, or other similar devices. Many pre-recorded MD's were mastered with 3.0 ATRAC which sounds poor. I believe MD players should be used to record and playback your own stuff. Right, then! It sounded all very 'early synthesiser', with lots of harsh electronic percussion. I recall it made the news because it was partly "composed by computer" (ZX-81 by the sound of it...). Never seem to find time to sit down and say all I want to. From: "KAHAR, Kudsia (7250)" > Finally someone else on the digest likes Steely Dan!! Love their stuff - > have almost all their albums now on CD I think you'll find that several people on the digest are Danfans and Levelheads alike. You mentioned "Black Cow" so I ran to put 'Aja' on the deck. SD is one of the best ensembles out there. > I've always thought Steely Dan as the band that got the world ready for > Level 42 - sort of. agreed. Lots of parallels here. > Donald Fagen is an unrecognized genius by most reviewers... agreed again. That reminds me, there's a really great website http://interjazz.com/irchosts.html You'll find all sorts of logs from IRC chats with a host of jazz artists. These happened when musicians had gone to play at the Blue Note in New York and the management got them on IRC to talk with interested netters. It's really a great thing because you get to ask some really famous artists the questions you've always wondered about. At the end they give away CD's to the people who asked the most thought-provoking stuff. *personally my favorite part of the deal* They have a listserv and whenever someone is coming to be online they send out an email. Info about that should be on the page. Anyway, all this goes to say that I went to one of these sessions recently when they got David Sanborn to come online. What a treat!! I was psyched to the hilt. Someone asked about his playing with STEELY DAN *phew finally got there* and Donald Fagen. Sanborn said he had a good relationship with them and that they'd always had fun. I think he (Sanborn) plays some on "Gaucho" not sure where else though. Apparently this is an ongoing relationship because I remember several years back when Sanborn's late night music show "Sunday Night/Night Music was still airing he had Fagen on to play through out. I have it taped *on a really really cheap tape* so you can't even make out most of their faces. The sound isn't much better either. Does anyone remember this show? Sanborn made a point of having avante-gardeish acts to play. People that wouldn't get airplay anywhere else. Can only think of a few names... Anyway I wish I would have taped more of them. Might have a really impressive set of sessions of a lot of interesting talent. Now about the fave keyboardists... From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) > My favorite keyboardist? > Chick Corea (I'm from the Chick Corea school of jazz piano) Personally I favor Bob James. *pre-Fourplay* My current fave of his is "All Around the Town." A live album with some really great funk and jazz and mix of the two on here. *check out Gary King's bass on "Westchester Lady"* Used to have a shrine up for Bobby on my web page, but that's a whole other email... I also have a liking for Joe Sample of "The Crusaders" great great keyboardist. And now for a more Level-related post... I've been meaning to ask this for the last few months. I'm taking a poetry class now and we've read a work by Christina Rossetti *Dante's sister* called "In an Artist's Studio". I'm wondering if anyone has read this and found a striking resemblance between it and the lyrics of A Kinder Eye? I don't think it's a coincidence. Anyone have any info on this? Like if they did take the poem as an influence why and who etc? That's my schpiel for this sixmonth. :) Ta. april e. ********** I know all we're doing is traveling without moving... --Jamiroquai ********** ------------------------------ Subject: More useless drivel with a bad pun From: Pat Flanagan Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 09:32:38 -0400 > Actually, on the Pamela Lee-hosted show, the musical guest was the > Rollins Band. It simply says that it was recorded live in Japan on April 20, 1995. As for Steely Dan, I'm a huge fan (but not so big perhaps as with L42). Probably my favorite song of theirs is "Glamour Profession." Actually, the whole of Gaucho as an album is one of those defining moments in music, I think. You just can't find a way to improve on what they had done. Thus I guess it was time for The Dan to part ways. I think I felt some of that with Forever Now. I honestly feel that L42 was never going to produce a better album after this, so while it certainly saddened me to see them go, I believe that they really left while "on top." I would have been much sadder if they had pulled the plug after Guaranteed. OK, Kudsia. I'll go with that! You have a kindred spirit here. And here's a related anecdote: I've seen the Dan twice here in Raleigh NC (Walnut Creek Amphitheatre). The first time was when they were just out on tour after all those years of nothing. I heard from my friend, who'd seen them in another city, that their Grammy-winning recording engineer (and one of my heroes) Roger Nichols was touring with them as monitor engineer (!) and recording the performances for a live album (the since-released Live in America). Some of my musician-friends (for whom I am recording engineer) were slated to be the "plaza band" - it's an outdoor deal. So, to make it short, I managed to attend the Dan's soundcheck! Sat right up front and enjoyed a much-too-short private concert by Steely Dan! And I carried an issue of EQ magazine (an engineering journal) which had Roger on the cover, in a plastic sleeve, and got him to autograph it apres soundcheck. He was great - chatted awhile. My drummer friend was busy getting autographs from the band (he got everyone but Fagen), but I was only concerned with the engineer! "I've tried to change it, but there's nothing I can do...." I've watched it very closely myself, wondering if there is even a fourth person in the video. Aside from the obvious close-ups of Mark, Mike and Gary, the other shots are of 3 members in the distance, wearing suits and clapping. I always assumed this was again, Mark, Mike and Gary and that Alan wasn't included because he was either too sick, or had passed on before the filming.
