It inspires me every time I hear it, and I plan on singing it during my next gig (August 22nd). * For the person who asked what people thought of Mike's solo album: I LOVE IT!! I listen to the song Changes whenever I need a pick me up on a sunny Saturday morning while drinking my coffee and reading the paper. It helps me get my day started. Plus it always makes me think of the good time I had in London (I purchased it right before I went in summer of '95 and played it the entire trip). * UK World Machine is better because it has Dream Crazy, one of my top five Level songs. It also has I Sleep on My Heart, and has a consistent track order, IMO. * I have a Bass Centre anecdote as well. Even though I live in NY, I have actually been there twice in the last year, and the first time I was there I went with Carl Mueller. There is an autographed picture of Mark on the wall, and Carl Mueller wanted to make a copy of it and buy the copy. The owner looked at us like we were crazy - it was quite comical. The second time I was there the owner alluded to the fact that he was probably going to move back to London to manage the other store. Any of you bass players out there, this store is awesome! They will ship anywhere, and they are very prompt in doing so. I got some nice gear there; a really nice bass stand, and a thick padded strap among other things. If you are ever in the LA area and are a bassophile, check it out. * JennCyn - Since you are a fellow a cappella head, you'll appreciate this. The a cappella group I sang with in college is competing in the Intercollegiate National A Cappella Championships on Saturday night at Carnegie Hall. I can't go, but I am getting a recording of it. If you want a copy, let me know - it should be a good bootleg. * EW&F - That new live CD sounds like The Bomb! I love them. I just ordered The Eternal Dance, which is the three CD box set they put out about five or six years ago. Back then I couldn't afford it and recently I couldn't find it, so I'm happy, but it sounds like I need to go buy this too! Here are my top picks: Favorite Instrumental Sun Goddess (also my favorite instrumental of all time) Favorite Up Tempo In The Stone (check out the horns and the bass) Favorite Slow Jam Can't Hide Love (the ultimate bump and grind song) * Speaking of slow jams, I always thought that Romance was definitely of the 70's slow song genre. The Barry White reference made me laugh, because it seems appropriate. Is this an omen of > L42/King/Lindup releases??? I agree. I've heard some great music this year so far, like "Disciplined Breakdown" by Collective Soul, and the album (I forget the name) by Savage Garden (ok, I know, it's just dance pop, but I like dance pop). Though, I HAVE found myself scouring for oldies lately. My latest purchases include "Antics In The Forbidden Zone" by Adam Ant, "The Innocents" by Erasure, "Jane Child" by Jane Child, "Contraband: Greatest Hits" by Men At Work, and the first release from a very little known Chicago-based singer named Nicholas Tremulis. If ANYONE out there has any other Nicholas Tremulis, PLEASE let me know. It's funky funky funky. > Last week, Andre and I were watching the TCOY clip from the Level > Best video. It seemed to us that t~e guitarplayer wasn't Alan > Murphy. But if he wasn't Alan Murphy (who must have been > seriously ill at that moment), who was it? Just an actor? I believe that IS Alan Murphy, he just doesn't look like himself due to his condition. You'll notice that all other members of the band get closeups, except him. I just think we're seeing him very close to the end, which always makes this a tough video for me to watch, as much as I like it. I remember Level 42 performing in a club scene, but don't think that the did the score? Does anyone have info on this? Also, let us know if you find more info on this 'Strike' or 'Stripe' band. Now what they hell is Mike saying when he's singing the chorus? 'Cos this is what it sounds like: I am flying I'm on the wings of love And that odor It comes from you my love Now really, that can't be the words. But I have no idea what the actual lyrics are. You > know, something DOES strike me as being funny whenever a group like Spice > Girls comes along -- tons of people complain that they only sing, they > don't play the instruments, and they don't write (though the credits > of the CD do show them as co-writers on each song -- what they wrote > remains to be seen). HELLO, that's the same process used by The Supremes, > The Shirelles, and countless other male and female groups who are now > considered classics. I know I'll probably catch some flack for mentioning > them in the same paragraph as Spice Girls, but hey, am I not right? You're correct; the 1990s were chock full of prefabricated pop acts, and it's not like the Spice Girls have hit an all-time low. As a musician myself, I guess their only sin is that they never paid their dues as far as performances - they never honed their act in the clubs, and their performance comes off as slightly amateurish, But I must admit, I like their tunes, why? Cos they're catchy, and mindless British pop music sounds light years better than mindless American pop music anyway. But I guess the reason why the Spice Girls catch all that flak is probably because American audiences expect something better from "Across the pond." After all, they produced the Beatles, Level 42, 80s new wave, 90s Acid Jazz, Trip-Hop, Jungle, etc. But the UK also produced some turkeys. I mean, I never personally thought Oasis and Bush were all that interesting to begin with anyway. I'd rather listen to the Spice Girls anyday than those two. If you have RealAudio, you can listen to some of that British top 40 stuff on Capital FM (www.capitalfm.co.uk). It's kinda fun to listen to a London radio station with British accents talking all day long without even hopping on a plane! The group is called either > "Stripe" or the "Strike". The song is called "I've got Peace on my Mind" > (quite a catchy tune!). It made me grin with pride! You stole my thunder but never mind - I couldn't wait to get home tonight to post a similar message to the Digest. The DJ is, I believe, Mark Goodier who has picked out this breaking single as a potential number one and plays it incessantly. It is by 'Strike' (sort of female led rap group) and the track's indeed called "I've got peace on my mind". I haven't actually heard it myself yet but I'm told by a colleague at work that it has a 'Leaving Me Now' sample for an intro, followed by rap interspersed with choruses sung by said female with more LMN samples. As far as I could gather, Mark Goodier spoke with some deference about Level 42, well, that is to say he didn't take the piss out of them. I dropped into a record shop in town and found a few CD singles by 'Strike' but not the one mentioned above - I don't think it's actually been released yet. A renaissance for our boys? Now, I'm catching up on digests.. Andre writes: (about the new MD player) > Well basicly the frequency range has been further extended and now > will go up to 19 kHz, instead of the 18 kHz of 4.0. And yes they have > put in some effort since the D/A convertor is said to be _VERY_ good. > And it has switchable filters too ! And a DIGITAL recording level > setting. A DIGITAL recording level?? How in the hell did Sony manage that?? That's impressive! For those who are wondering why I am so amazed by that, when you record from one digital means to another via optical cables, you are recording a data stream. Data streams cannot be altered like analog waves. Sort of like dubbing a cassette to another cassette. You can't change the intensity of the signal with the standard analog recording level. Now Sony has enable one to alter the data stream via a digital recording level. I assume this is what you're talking about, Andre. I am certainly no digital electrician so those who know what I'm talking about, feel free to correct me. $1900.00, eh? We're talking about "only" $1900.00. Right? Hmmmm.....a good D/A converter? I was in the closet about Yanni, you know, not wanting anyone to know that I like him, but he does have some pretty decent music. From what I understand about him, he is totally self taught; never had a music lesson in his life. That use to bug me because I'm from the old school; lessons, education, etc. and I use to think that only "legitimate" musicians studied music. Playing by ear as well, I've come to appreciate and accept the notion that you really don't need to study music necessarily to be good at it. My favorite Yanni song?.......Swept Away....... Love their stuff - have almost all their albums now on CD (had a few on vinyl that I bought at the Virgin MegaStore in Paris a few years back) except for their latest live one which was released about a year ago. I've always thought Steely Dan as the band that got the world ready for Level 42 - sort of. Fave tracks : Black Cow, Peg, Kid Charlemagne. Third World Man has the same mood as Physical Presence, I think. And I think Donald Fagen is an unrecognized genius by most reviewers... For those who want to discover Steely Dan and Donald Fagen, get his 1982 solo album "The Nightfly". Absolutely brilliant! John Shufford - was the EWF album you got the one that said Live In Velfarre? That is a most excellent live album - very tight - over an hour of enjoyment - major karaoke session goes on everytime its on the player. If not, you might want to check that one too. "Velfarre" also starts with "In The Stone"....so I'm wondering if it's the same one but called differently. STEELY DAN FANS - WRITE ME WRITE ME WRITE ME!!!!!!!!!
