Night Live From: Pat Flanagan Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 08:22:40 -0400 > Did anyone see the Spice girls on Saturday Night Live? - I couldn't > get it over here. Were they any good? (and I don't mean..) or were > they - as I strongly suspect - a complete load of bobbins? I saw them, and actually, I thought they were pretty good. It appeared that they WERE singing live, and, as such, it was good. You know, something DOES strike me as being funny whenever a group like Spice Girls comes along -- tons of people complain that they only sing, they don't play the instruments, and they don't write (though the credits of the CD do show them as co-writers on each song -- what they wrote remains to be seen). HELLO, that's the same process used by The Supremes, The Shirelles, and countless other male and female groups who are now considered classics. I know I'll probably catch some flack for mentioning them in the same paragraph as Spice Girls, but hey, am I not right? >[I saw the beginning of the show (with Pamela Lee's... "intro"), but then > fell asleep before the Spice Girls played... probably a good thing... -Eric] I don't know, Eric, you missed EXCELLENT DEAD-ON imitations of Jenny "The Irritator" McCarthy by Ms. Lee and David Lee "No Talent" Roth by Chris Kattan (paired up with the Goat Boy on an MTV show about 80's music); a great rendition of Tommy Lee by Norm McDonald; the "Roxbury Boys" (those two club-hopping cheezballs who head-bob endlessly to "What Is Love" by Haddaway) chasing Ms. Lee around; and Ms. Lee in countless tight, constricting, cleavage-enhancing (as if she needed help) outfits. It was a good show, actually. We now return you to our regularly scheduled topic. Like my friend Nigel from across the pond, accurately pointing out that Stevie Wonder's "Black Man" speaks to people of all backgrounds. Makes my proud to be a human being. :) Good point, by the way, about how "Black Man" bounces just like "Hot Water." Now that I think of it, it's almost as if "Forever Now" was a cross between Stevie and Steely Dan -- not the Dan's dark humour, but their top-of-the-crop arranging. The best tracks would sound fresh in any era between the early 70s and now. (Imagine if Mark had a Barry White voice on "Romance," probably the most 70s' - type piece L42 ever pumped out.) TCOY. I just picked up the Resurgence Forever Now, the Remix Collection (Connosseur Label), and Polydor's(?) Turn It On. Now my collection of the original LPs on CD includes everything I have ever seen in a Level 42 bin since I got started on this binge. I have a great import dealer! Singles are another matter entirely. From the notes in AYGB, regarding the extra tunes on FN...Where do the extra tunes fit in the chronilogical running order of release? Thank you for your help. A co-worker of mine has a mail order business with nothing but band memorabilia (posters, concert passes, gold records, promos, etc..) and he is currently looking into his inventory for any remaining Level 42 memorabilia... I will post his findings once they are here... He used to have a good amount of Level 42 material, including HUGE subway posters from France.... FRIDAY ------------------------------ Subject: Message from a happy Level 42 fan From: "eyesee communications" Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 21:07:49 +0200 Hello Levellers ! I have to admit, I was surprised to say so many L42-sites and info on the www (I'm only very recently connected to the virtual world). Above all, I thought that nobody was still interested in those funcky guys ! So I take this opportunity to present myself and share our common interest. I'm from Belgium, 25 years old and huge fan since 1984. Unfortunately I saw them only once live (Forest 1988). I know it's a shame. It's quite difficult to find good live-material in Belgium since they were not extremely popluar here, and they are almost forgotten at this time ("Level 42 ? Oh yeah, they had some good songs"). So if you have some good (live) material, please feel free to mail me. To end my introduction, I'll give an overview of my collection: Singles: Love games, Turn it on (UK), Starchild, The sun goes down, Microkid (UK), Hot Water, The Chant has begun, Something about you, Lessons in love, It's over, To be with you again (UK), Running in the family 12':Hot Water, Running in the Family (UK), To be with you again (UK), It's over (UK) CD-singles: Lessons in love (CD-video), Children say, Heaven in my hands, Tracie, Take care of yourself, Guaranteed, Overtime, My father's shoes, The hit combination, Forever now, Forever now (radio edit), All over you, Love in a peacefull world, Changes (promo, Mike Lindup) LPs: Early tapes,Physical Presence, World Machine, Running in the Family CD's: Level 42, Pursuit of accidents, Standing in the light, Influences (Mark King), True colors, A physical presence, World machine, Running in the family (platinum), Staring at the sun, Guaranteed, Forever now, Live at Wembley, Level best, Turn it on, The remix collection Video: Live at Wembley, Fait accompli, Level Best As I overlook this, I think it's no so bad. That's it from Belgium, keep on Levelling ! But I agree with previous posters, don't get hung up on the slow stuff. Hit some lively tracks as mentioned by others; a much more beneficial path. Now, my off-topic (forgive me please!): If anyone out there likes Depeche Mode, you just *have* to get ULTRA!!! Man, this album is just *amazing* For bass-o-philes, Doug Wimbish features on 'Useless' (along with fellow Tackhead Keith LeBlanc; I guess that's Tim Simenon's influece--he produced this thang). Also, to follow up on tekyoard player thread, there's some amazing synth playing/programming. It's dark, groovy, funky, without being formulaic. Plus, some real strings again (a la 'Songs of...') Ahem. Sorry. Oh yes, Luscious Jackson's FEVER IN FEVER OUT is bloody good too. This year is turning out to be brilliant for music! Is this an omen of L42/King/Lindup releases??? I live in Raleigh, North Carolina USA - not exactly Level 42 Central, but a great place to live. CD singles from our guys don't exist here, and vinyl? I don't think I've ever even seen Level 42 vinyl. To me, all those 12-inchers you guys talk about are mythological. That's why I'm so looking forward to AYGB and the other Digest discs. Wow, Mark! That's a collection! Perhaps the definitive Level 42 collection? Great website (http://www.york.ac.uk/~mjt101/ )! There are other L42 fans in my area, but no one with such a sizable collection that I know of. I might be so bold as to claim the best in NC, that is, unless someone out there wants to challenge! My Denon & Technics & CDROMs play everything > fine, even CDRs upto 73:58 ! Older players aren't completely compatible with the CD-R specification, Dirk. I have an original Magnavox portable (the very first CD boom box - the one from the early Energizer commercials - an eighties relic) which will play my CD-R's, but won't give me track access until it gets three or four tracks in. If I just start a disc, and try to skip ahead a track, it crashes! And , remember, Philips and Magnavox are synonamous. Z. ------------------------------ Subject: CD-R: Journey to the edge of the disc From: John Venzon Date: Tue, 22 Apr 97 15:35:16 -0700 To anyone who is interested in burning many copies of ĒD-Rs to give out: > I just tested some of my CDRs on an old Philips CD player (CD471, from > 1987). It will not play past 71m32s whatever CD I put in (even those > burnt on another CDR...). My Denon & Technics & CDROMs play everything > fine, even CDRs upto 73:58 ! When I put together and created the master for AYGB (As Years Go By for those folks new to the list) I burned the first batch and found that in many players before 1988, as well as Phillips' main line to high end/Sony CD Walkmans/many Laptop CD-Rom drives (Toshiba) and Early Laserdisc combo players they wouldn't be able to play much past 70-71 minutes, and when they did it would be very flakey. Most times they would play for the first part then lock up, or if they did play to the end they wouldn't stop, but just keep spinning at the end of the disc. I ended up burning new discs for those folks, and in the case of some people 3 or 4 tries until I could find a length that would work (Bill... thanks for being the test patient...). After doing this I came to the conclusion that while CD-Rs are great things of magic, it's not to wise to go much past 71 minutes. As someone had asked as to why the exits of some tracks on AYGB seemed shortened, it was done to make sure that all the tracks would fit in the safety time limit. You might be putout that you are missing 5 seconds of reverb fade out or 8 seconds of well... reverb fade out, but this was done to make sure that AYGB would play on everyone's disc player. Remember, as I pointed out some months ago (and was poo pooed by the poster), just because the disc that you burn for someone else plays on your disc machine, it's no guarantee that it will work on theirs. > Does any burner knows what happens if you try to burn an audio CD of > more than 74 minutes??? (errors? do you lose the disc, does it needs a > fix up session etc etc?????) Burning CD-R is no different than copying a file to a floppy. If you try to create a disc longer than 74 minutes (650 Megs) the CD burning software will say "not enough space available". Well, it's that way for the CD software _I_ use. From: Bilaltab @ aol.com Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 19:19:14 -0400 (EDT) Hi guys After work today I turned on ''Radio 1'' in the car and heard a dance type song playing. It is the new 'record of the week'. To my surprise, it was based on the "Leaving Me Now" tune. What a compliment to the band that their music was remembered by another group. The group is called either "Stripe" or the "Strike". The song is called "I've got Peace on my Mind" (quite a catchy tune!). It made me grin with pride! It reminded me of when Mike said he hopes that Level 42 made music that will be remembered. Does anyone know anything more about this band and if L42 had any involvement/comment? I sincerely wish them the best. PS. Thomas: my track suggestions for your breakup (sorry): There is a Dog (! M King) The Ape (!) It's a show from Tokyo in 1995 that was originally only an import disc but has since been released domestically by Rhino. It's 75:34 and covers most of their biggest hits (hence the name, I suppose). The only thing not to like about this set is that they do medley versions of "September" and "Let's Groove" so they are much shorter than I'd like. However, this version of "Fantasy" is perhaps the best I've ever heard (I saw them live in Seattle in 1988, so I have a little something to compare it to). Philip Bailey is simply incredible. The track listing is as follows: In The Stone/September/Let Your Feelings Show/Let's Groove/Sun Goddess/Can't Hide Love/Boogie Wonderland/Fantasy/Reasons/That's The Way Of The World/Africano/I'll Write A Song For You/Be Ever Wonderful/After The Love Is Gone/Shining Star/System Of Survival/Sing A Song/Devotion. I don't know why I never really thought of this before, but does anybody else notice a connection/similarity between "Let's Groove" and "Micro Kid"? Can't quite place my finger on it, but it's there. Do yourself a favor and take a trip back to the Boogie Wonderland of the 70's. You'll be glad you did because EWF can still turn it out! It is kinda mindless & its all basically been done before, but they are kinda fun, & some of it is kinda catchy. PS . another LVL 42 anecdote: I live in the LA area, Ventura to be exact. I was in a place called the Bass Centre in Los Angeles they have a sister store in London UK. The owner of the store is a founding father of Trace Elliott Amplification, One day when I struck up a conversation with him he said that during the early days at Trace Elliott Mark King used to come by all the time.
