Don Z. posted his CD listing of Level 42 and related stuff yesterday. I'd say you are pretty much there on the album front. Singles is another matter though. I don't know where you live, but if you're outside the UK, it's pretty darned good!! (even if you're not, it's still not to be sniffed at!!) OK, so I live in the UK (and Belgium), so you would expect I have a fairly good opportunity to get stuff. I've only been seriously collecting for year and a half (maybe). At last count (including solo and other "related" stuff and compilations) I have:- 24 CD Albums (music only) 18 CD singles (music only) 5 CD-Videos (including video singles) 7 Other CD albums If you want to check out my full listing, got to my website (see .sig). There must be others on the digest who have a fair deal more than this? I have some work to do on the vinyl front.....to be a completist that is! ATRAC / PASC etc...... Did anyone know that two albums were released on DCC: Level Best and Guaranteed? I have Guaranteed DCC, but will have to look in 2nd hand places for Level best. Oh, and before you all start laughing about me having obsolete equipment, I should just say that I have never liked the concept of DCC, and have always prefered the disc format of MD. I have never owned equipment for either, but I sure would like an MD system (portable MD recorder, car hifi(possibly) and domestic hi-fi). All I need to do is find myself a job for when I graduate, and save those pennies! Were any albums ever officially released on MD?????? TCOY, Mark. I did the same with the Hit Combo Remix2 (really clean as poss.). Was 6 hours of work, but it is cool. Great remix CD I have now! I just tested some of my CDRs on an old Philips CD player (CD471, from 1987). It will not play past 71m32s whatever CD I put in (even those burnt on another CDR...). My Denon & Technics & CDROMs play everything fine, even CDRs upto 73:58 ! Does any burner knows what happens if you try to burn an audio CD of more than 74 minutes??? (errors? do you lose the disc, does it needs a fix up session etc etc?????) Msg to Takeo: what did you think of these remixes I've sent you on MD. i already know your girlfriend did not like that 'hot' bonustrack, but I was curious about the rest. Remember you have the unrefurbished versions. msg to Wes: I'm finishing up your tapes, next week it's done, and they sound LOVELY ! msg to ERiC: any nervous news?? Please?? Tapes perhaps?? I want that Classic sooooo bad! msg to John: cool down msg to Andre: een copietje zoals Gert ook in Luxemburg te krijgen :-) Kun je nog eens jouw lijst doormailen? Dirkies ------------------------------ Subject: Fan named Derrick McKenzie From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 13:10:34 -0400 (EDT) Hiya, I was just poking through Jamiroquai's new web site, http://www.jamiroquai.co.uk/ and came across the following blurb in Derrick McKenzie's biography: "Who are your main musical influences? My main musical influences are, Harvey Mason, Billy Cobham, Early Incognito, Level 42, Lots of music from the mid 70's to mid 80's on the Jazz Funk and Jazz tip." Were they any good? (and I don't mean..) or were they - as I strongly suspect - a complete load of bobbins? Not you, Not me, Only memory [I saw the beginning of the show (with Pamela Lee's... "intro"), but then fell asleep before the Spice Girls played... probably a good thing... -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: addendum From: "dirk.vael" Date: 21 Apr 97 19:14:54 forgot this one in todays mail: msg to Afzal in Manchester: are you still alive? I still need to send you a tape, suggestions are welcome! Dirkies ------------------------------ Subject: Various From: N Collier Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 20:09:10 +0100 > P.S.: Non-L42 pick-me-up song of the week: "Black Man" by Stevie Wonder, > from "Songs In the Key of Life." Makes me proud to be a black man. And > you can groove to it. Despite the title, I thought the song was all about 'men' of all colours, "this world was made for all men". As James Brown said, "I'm not black or white, I'm a tax payer". Incidentally, this has been mentioned before, but the bass line in 'Black Man' is virtually identical to 'Hot Water'! Also, you know sometimes when you stick a L42 CD into your stereo which you haven't played for a while and a track just cuts straight through and takes you by surprise? Happened to me this weekend - 'Freedom Someday' - talk about a bouncy, pick-me-up tune. Makes me proud to be a L42 fan. BTW. I'll be writing to the local newspaper on the Isle of Wight this week regarding some public recognition of the band - I'll keep the Digest posted. A petition may follow. Regards Nigel ------------------------------ Subject: karaoke, singing in Vegas, Tomaz, Winston From: angelina rogero Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 17:30:26 -0700 (PDT) Hello all, Thanks to those of you who answered my question about Level Karaoke. It's so unfair that they have songs available to sing along with by them over there and not in the US. Anyway, to clarify things, I am NOT into karaoke but I have a friend who REALLY is and she drags me along with her when I have nothing better to do and since I'm a singer, she makes me sing. She can sing well also and so that's why she's so into it, so she can show off. But I think karaoke is made for people who can't and normally don't sing so they can feel like a star for a couple minutes. Not really for the enjoyment of those of us like Randall who noted that hearing a tone deaf partying person through 500 watt speakers is not aesthetically pleasing. Regarding "karaoke" at the Levelfest in Vegas, I think it's a good idea. Not real karaoke, like at the bars but at the "jam" session. I mean, I'd like to preferably have people who'd call themselves singers to be the ones to "jam" with the kids who call themselves instrumentalists there. Everyone keeps talking about bringing their instruments but no one is asking who will sing. I WILL!!!!! I know every part to every song, practically. Regarding Tomaz's breakup, I know how it is. Just play YOUR very favorite songs and that will pick you up. Someone mentioned listening to "Black Man" by Stevie from SITKOL but just make sure you stay away from "If It's Magic." Boy, that was a doozy for me when I heard it a week ago. I just broke up with my 3year&8mos. boyfriend myself. Then again, sometimes, it feels good to just let it out and cry after hearing a sad song because holding it in all day while on the job and/or at school can be awful. Hang in there, Tomaz, I'm with you! Winston, did you finally get my message back to you last week? Yes, I am interested in the new stuff you mentioned. Bye for now, Angel ------------------------------ Subject: Seattle radio From: JennCyn @ aol.com Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 02:02:24 -0400 (EDT) As I sit here listening to Thomas Dolby's "The Ability to Swing" on 103.7 - The Mountain.......... (and they're warning us that Aliens Ate My Buick is hard to find these days, they have it on vinyl, and you probably have to "import the CD from Pakistan." uh, sure. :) I've been station-surfing tonight and ran across part of a remix of "SAY" on 89.5 (strung together with various other material); I think it was the Shep Pettibone remix, but I was too busy gaping at the radio to really figure it out. ! That officially qualifies as the first time I've heard a remix of L42 on the radio around here....... okay, The Mountain is now playing "Virtual Insanity." We're doing good so far tonight. Anyone want to throw out a request or two? :) -- Jenn ------------------------------ Subject: Mick Karn From: Gert Emmens Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 07:25:27 +0100 Do you like the music of Mick Karn (ex bassplayer of Japan) and do you collect everything of every musician that was ever involved with Level 42? From: Wesley Holley Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 03:02:51 +0000 I just wanted to second what songs we could suggest to Thomas over his failing love life. Some were mentioned, some were not. Here's what I would suggest: 1. Set Me Up (sort of a screw you/fight back type song) 2. Take Care of Yourself (one for self assurance) 3. I Feel Free (Mark King) (for feeling good) 4. She Can't Help Herself (one out of apathy for her mistake) 5. Don't Bother Me (...I don't give a damn...) 6. Changes (Mike Lindup) (time to move on) Best of luck Thomas! Also, my wife and I are spending this weekend in Laguna Beach. It is a graduation and birthday present wrapped up in one from my wife. Anyway, are there any stores that one may suggest I visit? I have most everything, just want to possibly get one of those "hard to find" items. ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thanks Wesley Holley the good man in a storm ------------------------------ Subject: Morrisey Mullen/Vinyl From: Garry Kay Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 10:42:32 +0100 Hi Levelheadz To Ken Meacham who was after some info on Morrisey Mullen. About 15 years ago I went through a phase of Morrisey Mullen. They played some half decent Jazz/Funk/Soul. Jim Morrisey has a strange way of strummin' that guitar and if memory serves they had a blind keyboard player. I heard them play live at the Isle of Skye festival in about '81! - what a gig that was!! I'm sure the Southampton show will be a good 'un. Also for all you vinyl freaks I noticed the following URL in today's press. www.vinylrevival.com Last but not least, can anyone do me a tape of AYGB? Adios Garry gkay @ linklaters.com
