From: Ken Meacham Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 11:16:15 +0100 Hi Folks! Good news for Gary Husband fans. He is playing in a band called "The New Jim Mullen Quartet", at The Gantry in Southampton on May 16th at 8pm. I stumbled on this the other day when I read the blurb from The Gantry summer programme: The New Jim Mullen Quartet -------------------------- "We are very pleased to welcome back the absolutely wonderful guitarist Jim Mullen. For many years a member of the leading UK jazz funk band Morissey/Mullen. Mullen is unique in playing extremely accomplished, exciting and accessible music. His band includes Gareth Williams on piano, Mick Hutton on bass, and Gary Husband on drums. We look forward to it." Sounds good to me! I've bought two tickets (6 pounds each), and currently one of them is spare. I phoned them today, and they have lots of tickets left. Let me know if you'd like to go, and we could meet up. This could be a good excuse for a few of us to meet up for the night. Does anyone out there know any more about Jim Mullen, Gareth Williams, or Mick Hutton? I am assuming of course that there isn't another drummer out there called Gary Husband! Here are the details of the venue. It is quite a small place, so you can get a good view. Doors open at 7pm, and there are no pre-allocated seats.: The Gantry, off Blechynden Terrace, Southampton, SO15 1GW. I had a copy of that same cassette, but I gave it to Mike Payne, when he visited in NY. I had all the remixes already, so I figured what the heck. I did not know that this version was ever released on Compact Disc. Anyone else know anything about this being released on CD? Jeff Grous - Thanks for the turntable info. A litlle history would explain my situation better. 90% of my vinyl collection is classic 12" singles, from when I was a DJ in high school. Needless to say the vinyl wasn't cared for very well. So i figured a 'great' turntable would be a needless expense, especially since i never purchase vinyl, except by Level 42. The first thing I did when I got the turntable was to clean all the Level 42 vinyl, and record all of the stuff to DAT tape. (all the things that I don't have on CD) One day I hope to transfer these DATS to Compact Disc. I'll peak to you an John V about the pre-mastering things, okay? But I'm sure someone has better vinyl than me. Bilal - The film you are thinking of is 'Hot Pursuit' starring John Cusack. The closing scene has 'Lessons In Love' as the music bed, while Cusack and his girlfriend sail away in to the sunset. If any of you are John Cusack fans, be sure to check out 'Grosse Poninte Blank' his new, VERY funny flick. tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: cohesiveness From: "Steve Allert" Organization: MCI Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 08:51:10 -0500 As per Lolita's suggestion for which Level disc is the 'tightest', I have to echo her opinion vote for the first-Level 42. Speaking of that -- the way Mike had his hair cut in the "Hot Water" video and the way they dressed during their "World Machine" and "Running In the Family" photo sessions were and still are pretty sharp. Could he have started the fade trend that started to become popular a year later? NAAAAH... Another thing about the hair theory: Hall and Oates' best work -- from "Private Eyes" to the "Out of Touch" single -- came before Daryl started letting his hair grow really long. (Although I'm a fan, "Ooh Yeah" and "Change of Season" blew huge chunks. He had his hair short for his most recent and best solo album "Can't Stop Dreaming," which is out in Japan and available in the US through the Hall and Oates fan club.) Same thing with Phil Collins -- his drumming on "No Jacket Required" and "Invisible Touch," while still solid stuff, doesn't measure up to "Face Value," "Abacab," the "Genesis" album (with "Mama" on it), all cut when Phil had his hair short. Somehow, Stevie Wonder and Babyface never have this quality vs. hair problem. :) TCOY. My reply: I totally agree. Maybe when he had the buzz cut, he wasn't concerned with his "image," but just with kicking butt musically. As for image, I think he has received a fair amount of bad guidance. For examples, see the picture on the back cover of WM (what are they supposed to be in, silk pajamas?), the cover of RITF (looks like he is gonna kill the photographer for making him do the hand gesture) and the whole SATS fake coffee room thing. I think that Mark's natural charisma comes out most when he just jamming or is casually hanging out. ------------------------------ Subject: Hey! New Member!! From: Chris Remington Organization: dsmedia group Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 14:21:08 +0000 Greetings!! I have been receiving the Digest for a few weeks now and I am impressed with the knowledge and the devotion you all share for Level 42. Some thoughts from a new subscriber: * I received my copy of AYGB yesterday. Congrats to all involved in this production. I really enjoy the disc and look forward to obtaining copies of other projects in the future. * Major League Baseball has decided to retire the uniform number "42" forever. This was done to honor Jackie Robinson, the first African-American player, who broke the color barrier when he appeared with the then Brooklyn Dodgers fifty years ago this season. No other pro baseball player will ever wear the number 42 again and it will be on display in all 30 of the pro stadiums. Kudos to the "Byrdman" for also noticing the significance of this gesture. Some random bits of information about me: First Level 42 experience: Hearing "World Machine" while spending a semester abroad in London in 1985. Best Level 42 experience: Seeing them live twice-- Opening for Steve Winwood at the MECCA arena in Milwaukee Wisconsin on November 7, 1986 and as Madonna's opening act at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI in July of 1987. I have also turned at least a dozen people on to this band and made them true believers. Worst Level 42 experience: Somehow missing all four of the London Hammersmith Odeon dates while in London in November, 1985. What was I thinking?! Favorite Level 42 songs: "I Sleep On My Heart", "All Over You", "Chinese Way" and "SomethingAbout You." Favorite Level 42 album: The UK release of "World Machine." To those out there who enjoy this, please do not take offense to my verbal prose about this form of "entertainment" because it is strictly my opinion, but it is the biggest waste of human energy and resources I could imagine. Most of that comes from the fact that I have perfect pitch and to hear someone "sing" along to a song badly makes my goosebumps hurt! Kind of like dragging your fingernails down a chalkboard. At an angle! While grinding your teeth! And chewing on styrofoam! With the sound of someone bending their finger all the way back. And all of this sound pumped through a pair of 9 foot high Marshall tower speaker amp rated at 700 watts per channel! OK, I'm exaggerating. Make that 500 watts per channel. OK, everyone can fling their darts and poison arrows this way. :( Bill writes: > P.S. Randall did you get your copy of WORLD MACHINE which I sent a > week ago! Yes I did, sir. So far, the response to Lolita's question about the tightest Level CD seems to favor Running In The Family, with WM not far behind. For those who like WM, do you prefer the US or UK version? Jakko - Mustard Gas & Roses - totally devoid of any melodies. Sings ok. Solos nice, but little rhythm guitar (typical for a L42 guitarist) Boon - TinMan - pretty good, although he sings like Pat F. Alan Murphy w/SFX - this is great instrumental 'fusion' stuff. Everyone should have this CD! Both Mark & Mike's solo albums are very good. I plan to buy them soon. (I only have copies of all of the above :)) To the guy w/the L42 Sig (Mark T?). I like it, although it doesn't always look 'neat'. Past Lives and Romance, while good songs, seem > somewhat random to me in terms of track order. I just bought the Resurgence FN on my way back from Florida two weeks ago, and have to conclude, in my humble ;-) opinion, that IT is the poorest album, sequence-wise. Perhaps I was just too fond (and to accustomed to) the original, and I do like the added songs okay. But "Billy's Gone" for an opener? Those of you who are musicians: would you open a set with a down-tempo number? I think not! You open with fire, with energy. You don't play that stuff until the listeners settle down a bit. I think that "Forever Now" was the perfect opener, one of the very best L42 songs, and should have been left where it was. Any thoughts, 'heads? Also, I got my first glimpse of DVD in action yesterday, when I visited the Raleigh Best Buy store. They were busy installing the display. It looks mahvelous! I don't know how I could have gotten that mixed up especially since I'm in RADIO!!!!!! However....yeah Mike is definitely the dish and I just love him singing Kouyate. What did you think of his solo album? I thought Changes was a good effort and I heard he was coming up with another solo album soon. I used to play Changes at an old radio station I was at a few years ago but unfortunately not many Malaysians had anything to say about it. And you know what? I only have Changes in vinyl as there were no CD players at this particular station I was at a few years back. However I thought his vocals were a bit on the weak side and didn't have that Oommph. Mark however has a great voice. JAMIROQUAI******* Yep - Emergency On Planet earth is definitely the best Jamiroquai album. Jay's voice is really versatile. In fact one track from Emergency sounds like it could have been a L42 tune during their POA years. FOREVER NOW THE WORST ALBUM? Absolutely NOT. Love it!!! I thought Guaranteed was a bit on the weak side compared to FN. My favourite album : World Machine. Gotta go........have to check out the latest music for the radio station........
