I agree that Ronny Jordan is cool - he's on a lot of acid jazz compilations and his own CDs are great - but he isn't a bassist. He's a guitar player. > ...Mike Lindup (whom I had a MAJOR crush on as a teenager) Funny that you say that, because 12 years ago when I first got into the band along with my best friend, we defined our devotion to the band by who we liked. She thought Mark was most handsome and I was waayy into Mike. That opinion still stands, with the exception of his afro-mustache-daishiki period. I also have a Mark King hair theory: he looks best and is most prolific as a musician when he has short hair. The periods in which his hair was long he wasn't as good and he let himself go looks wise, but when he had short hair he was at the top of his game. Sounds crazy, but it makes you think. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Silence From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 10:05:09 -0400 (EDT) I was listening to the 'Live At Wembley' CD last nite and in particular the track 'Silence'. I really enjoyed this performance because of the synth 'solo' accents that Mike Lindup plays during song. It then occured to me that I saw a shot of Krys Mach playing a E.W.I. , possibly in the 'Fait Accompli' video. Does anyone know if Krys is actually playing the lead synth lines on this instrument, or if Mike is doing it on Keys? ** E.W.I. stands for Electronic Wind Instrument. This is connected to a keyboards, and allows a wind player to control and play the keyboards from this instrument. Thanks, Winston [N.B. fans of the "EWI" (Yamaha, I think?) should totally dig any late 1980's stuff by Michael Brecker - one of the great (but under appreciated) modern tenor sax players. I agree that Guaranteed is a very diverse album, but I think all the songs are related, in that almost all seem to be about failed, failing, or otherwise painful personal relationships. Did anyone else notice this? I wonder if it had anything to do with Mark's divorce. I think Seven Years and Set Me Up say a lot by themselves. I also think think that this album was their absolute best album in terms of the quality of musicianship, particularly in the guitar of Alan Holdsworth. Anyone else got thoughts on this? ------------------------------ Subject: The Defender of ATRAC 4.5? My name is James Sutton and I've been a subscriber for a couple months now. I don't know why it's taken me this long to post. I really enjoy the digest and knowing there's plenty of 42 fans out there like myself. I live in Santa Barbara, CA. and work at a software company called QAD. I also have played drums for about 12 years. My goal is to be able to play music for a living and tour. I'm going to die trying! I have been into 42 since 1984 or so. It's difficult for me to pick an absolute favourite band because of my extremely diverse music taste. But if I am forced to pick it's obviously Level42. I have a tremendous amount of respect for all of the musicians and people who were and are involved with Level42. I can't pick a favourite song or album because all of the 42 music moves me in different ways. I own a copy of AYGB and I think it's the bomb!(so to speak) I am also awaiting my 42 t-shirt from Matt. I can't wait!! The work all of you guys are doing is unbelievable. I really appreciate it! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I wanted to let you all know some 411. There is a fantastic source to get that hard to find Level42 stuff here in America. I used to work there so I know first hand. Counterpoint Music (info @ counterpoint-music.com) I received my UK version of WM and RITF Platinum Ed. and lots of related stuff. It used to be a CD/Coffee house but is now strictly Internet based. The owner's name is Brian Hamada and he is a great guy. I took drum lessons from him when I was 15.(I'm 25 now) He will do everything he can to get you what you want. I know this sounds like a commercial but Brian's good people. So contact him for all your 42 desires! One thing he can't get for me (due to it's out of print state) is the Guaranteed Live VHS. It's the only video I don't have and I am dying to see it!! If anyone can help, would you mind emailing me personally to avoid "digest clogging"? jos @ qad.com Well, I have to work now. Without a question in my mind, the two tightest albums are World Machine (the original version, not the re-tracked American release) and True Colours. Many people think that True Colours is a rather dark album, which it is, but I find it to be extremely cohesive. >Saturnine Martial & Lunatic. I can't figure that last one out...it's >really strange, like Roland Orzabal decided to rehash a bunch of old >TfF songs in new styles. Same melody lines but different beats and >instruments. Kinda weird. Those are all previously released B-sides. TFF, especially in the Big Chair era, did have a habit of reusing melody or backing lines, but at different speeds, re-keyed, or turned around in some way, ala Art of Noise. That's one of the things I like about them. I think SM&L is an exceptional album for showing "the other side" of TFF. >Leaving price aside, it is very important to find a bass that you enjoy >playing, does it feel right in your sweaty palms ?? I agree. I only had two basses when I played (or attempted to play), and brands wouldn't matter in the least bit to me if I bought a new one. I'd be concerned with: A) what feels comfortable, because the more comfortable you are, the better you'll play, and B) what has the sound I like. If you find a bass that feels right to you, but doesn't have the exact sound, you can always change the pickups, but you can't change the weight, size, or general feel of the bass. Be sure to test some different strings out, too, as they can strongly influence the sound and feel. What are yours? My reply (delurkifying): My initial reaction was that WM (US version) would be my answer, partially because it is my favorite album and the one I have listened to most. But after looking at your criteria again, I think that the track order and flow of Running in the Family makes the most sense, even though I think it is a small notch below WM in terms of quality of some of the songs. Also, I think that if they pared down a few tracks from FN (Res), that might be in the top 2. Past Lives and Romance, while good songs, seem somewhat random to me in terms of track order. And as for the least "tight"? I'd vote for SATS. The mood for tracks alternates between much more upbeat in tempo and mood and less so. I always want to reshuffle and play it in a different order. Anyway, John, If you are > up to the task, I can send you the vinyl and you can do a direct vinyl > to Dat or hardrive dub. ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE!! :-) I just can't NOT talk about this... Winston, you're kidding, right? I mean, the surest way to wear out vinyl is to play it with a cheap arm and cartridge! And since your vinyl is unreplaceable, I would think that you'd play it on the best thing you could get your hands on... not so? My own vinyl setup consists of a Sony PSX-800 'table (a MASSIVE chassis mated to their awesome BioTracer tonearm. The really unusual thing about the 'table is that this is the only linear-tracking version of this tonearm they ever made, and one of the only LT setups in the world that does not "fishtail" its way across the vinyl as 99% of the other LT schemes do) and Shure V15-VMR cartridge. Record wear with this tonearm setup is significantly lower than that of a conventional tonearm, especially on the critical inner grooves. Couple that tonearm with the V15-VMR (lowest record wear of any known cartridge), and you've got very, very low record wear. I can play vinyl over and over (well, never more than one play in three hours, 'cause vinyl temporarily gets brittle after each play, and fractures if you play it again right away) and there is no discernable change in the record's condition. While there are some cartridges that offer better soundstaging and detailing, there are NONE that are flatter, more neutral or even come close to the low rate of wear offered by this one. I've found it to be the best compromise, since you can't genrally replace vinyl anymore. Winston, you GOTTA get a better table/arm/cartridge for your vinyl! It's critical. Plus, the sonic difference will be _night and day_! On a related note: I offered this before, don't know if John V. wants to go this way- I also own an SAE Impulse Noise Reduction unit- which, you guessed it, kills ticks and pops. The unique thing is that it doesn't affect the rest of the music in any way, it basically does what John does, without the mouse! It won't get every low-level pop, but it does get the big ones, and that could save John a lot of work. He'd just have to do the little ones. I can premaster all the vinyl to either DAT, or to CD-R (not a PC-based CD burner, but a Pioneer Elite consumer stand-along burner. The CD-R would be easier) thru the SAE, and then John could do the rest of the pre-production and mastering. John, Winman, eveyone else? What do you think? Kinda weird. TFF's RATKOS is, I think, one of the best albums I've ever heard. It took quite a few listens to settle in, though. The Live King's tour was great - I've got the LA show on CD-R (thanks Evan, if you're still with us). SM&L is a B-side compilation, of which many songs are based on remixes - that's why you have the "rehash" opinion. I have the same opinion of remixes in general; SM&L has a few good moments but I think it's better suited for TFF completists. Jamiroquai - I can't figure out what all the fuss is about. The new video with the sliding floor is cool, but the song does nothing special for me. I saw the live show on MTV and it did nothing to improve my opinion. I know a lot of folks here are getting into them. I'm curious - since I'm one of those aberrations that thinks SATS and Guaranteed are the two best offerings from L42 and FN the worst, do the others that share this opinion (come on, I know there's a few of us!) think the same thing as I do about Jamiroquai? I haven't posted for a while due to tax season (my finance being a tax accountant). Here are a few notes from the last month plus. Forgive me for the length, but I haven't posted in a while and I just want to catch up. So, in the most condensed form I can muster... BYRDMAN AND THE SPICE GIRLS: I think I spoke too soon about these gals. I happened to catch them on "Saturday Night Live" and even if they're not the most musicly talented group they have "physical presence" and you can't help but watch (and their songs are a little catchy). Guess I sold out, too... THE RETIRING OF 42: How weird to think that I was going to buy a Rockies jersey with my last name and the #42 on it, for my birthday, the afternoon before 42 (Jackie Robinson's playing number) was universally retired in the MLB. I made this comprise: I would try and buy a Brooklin Dodgers jersey with Robinson's name and number insted, out of respect... THE BEST OF ALL SATURDAY MORNING TV: How could you guys miss mentioning... FAT ALBERT AND THE COSBY KIDS: The single greatest all time Saturday show ever (topping even Annimaniacs) Every American kid has seen this show at least once, and I'll prove it. If you know who Weirld Harold or The Brown Hornet is, or a can sing at least on Cosby Kids song, you know I'm right. ("A shoe, a lamp, a postage stamp. He don't care what...") FALSETTO FACEOFF Who has the better falsetto voice: Mike Lindup, Al B. Sure, or Phillip Balliey? Although I love Mike's parts, and rather sing Al's "Killing Me Softly" than The Fugees, I'm positive that Phil has the higher range. Love to hear some insights. HIDDEN MEANINGS IN PAST LIVES Does anyone have any idea what the song "Past Lives" is about? To my best guess it has something to do with the sea calling to a man after being away for so long. But is the woman in the song the sea, a siren, or an actual woman? I would guess she's a siren whose call leads him back to sail, although their is compelling evidence for the woman being the sea calling him back with a ghost-like call. He forgets the lure of the waters, but when he "stumbles" back "the fog" of his past tenure as salior clears in his head. The ghost of the sea seems right if you throw in the vague line "Welcome to the House of Usher", which if memory serves me is a Poe tale about hauntings. Its a stretch, I know, but its what came to me. KAROKE 42: Here in Denver (at the Boiler Room in the Tivolli) there used to be Karoke night Thursdays and I they had SAY on track for the daring. I should know (I sang it once there). By the way, how about a little Level 42 karoke at the Vegas Levelfest? You have all these great musicians bringing their gear. I'm not as good a bassist as I am a trumpet player and tenor, and I would like to join in. So how about a few rounds for us who can't slap as well as the rest, but know all the songs by heart (even Mike's parts)? Anyone know what that is? Yeeeh, as Gert Emmens showed me yesterday this is just another boring comilation which all of a sudden is in a lot of stores over here (price: DFL 24.95) It contains a small "booklet" with another level 42 history......yawn ! O well, if you're a completist, you have to get it. Well, fine tastes in audiophilia, Andre! My recommendation, however, would be to skip the HDCD convertor, and stick with something in the line of the ARC DAC2 (20 bit), and use the money you've saved to purchase a DVD machine (when available), and eventually a DVD audio 96k processor! I'm not familiar with your choice of turntable, but I like my friend's Sota Star Saphire/ Sumiko SHO combo. . . ;) > And now seriously, Dirk you know I have a very old (20 years ?) (which is not a bad player, Onkyo build it) ? Well, to put it simply, early CD players sucked! They've come a long way in the decade and a half they've been out. Outside of the better specs, early CD players sounded worse than just about _any_ cheap turntable. New units are another issue entirely- both CD and LP reproduction has come a long way since then, but the majority of improvements made for LP playback came between '68 and '85(?), while the improvements in CD playback come everyday now. > OK, I agree there's been a lot of improvement on the A/D front, maybe I > _should_ go and listen for another player, mmmm let's see the Marantz > CD-67SE seems to be a very good player for it's price....... Yes, it is. I'd also recommend checking out the Sony CDP-XA3 ES (I think this is the current designation). I've heard this new breed of ES machine Sony's put out, and they're actually real good! A big improvement from machines of 4 years ago. Also, maybe think about components, like the CAL Sigma/ Delta combo (get 'em for a steal now!). Last word: I'll be in Dallas tomorrow for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Deep Ellum Live). Anyone who's interested in getting together before the show (dinner? suds?), drop me a line before noon, and I'll give you a call when we figure out where we'll be. Groetjes, Zap! PS- I saw Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity" video yesterday- LOVED IT! ------------------------------ Subject: RE THE BONUS 12" MIXES From: bmiller @ abbeywood.com (Bill Miller) Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 09:20:37 +0100 (BST) Levelheads I had a few replies on my EMAIL yesterday, after requesting if anybody knew where I could pick up a CD version of L42's "WORLD MACHINE + BONUS SIDE OF 12" MIXES - LIMITED EDITION" People were asking me what was on it.
