Dre: RCA albums were released on vinyl, but I think you should buy a good CDplayer if the diff between vinyl & CD is so big with your equipment (there is a slighter better bass on vinyl, but you need to listen VERY carefully) 2. I have MEGA-CLEAN dubs from the live 12"es mentioned by JohnV, but they're on MD :-) For a non live example (can't compare with the versions JohnV has), my copy of ROTHRM man sounds a zillion times better than the AYGB version, I can't even detect more than 5 very silent ticks on the whole song (5:58!). But yes, I have a great turntable (Technics SL1210Mk2 with a Stanton 500 disco pro cell), used a rather expensive Luxman amplifier which has a mode for vinyl similar to dolby for tape (vinyl sounds a bit less sharp, but the slight ticks are gone!) and of course a great MiniDisc recorder.... (btw, I discovered some weird things about this AYGB disc during lowlevel editing, when making my own V1.1 version) 3. Maybe we could add Over There of Fait Accompli on the Live CD2. 4. What happened with the awesome performance of Tracie from Wembley 89 ? Add it at once! 5. Listened to Changes yesterday (Hi Gert!).... great album.. Mike is a great artist 6. No argument there. I even think you can hear some similar phrasing and cadences in a few of the songs on "Words". But my thinking is, if someone were a Level 42 fan, and had no idea who Wally Badarou is, he wouldn't automatically dig Wally's music. Whereas, if you heard Live at Wembley and really dug Alan's guitar playing, you'd probably like Go West pretty well too. Well, you can always be better off buying a used gear. Starting off with a good bass is pretty important for your motivation. I started out with Fender Musicmaster Bass and it SUCKED! It was "bass", but that's it! no more and no less. I didn't really wanted play that thing because the way it played. I recommend Alembic over anything for several reasons. I own one (MK signature delux with LEDs!). They are the best playing bass I've ever played (not nessesary the easiest), and their quality is top of the industry. I'm usually a Japanese fan (guess why?) on most things (cars, electronics stuff etc..) but when it comes to bass, Alembic tops them all. Look for used Alembics. Epic is a excellent bass if you can find one used. They go from low $500-high $800 range. Remember, Epic first came out, the list price was $1399 w/o case so don't over pay. I say if you can find one for $600, you did good. Epic is very comfortable to play, and they sounds "Alembic". If you don't have enough money for Alembics....then.......Fender Jazz would be a great bass to start with. Just don't get one from Mexico and Korea! They SUCK in the BIG way! If you wanna get new gear, I persoally recommend 'Bass Northwest' in Seattle WA. That's where I bought my Alembic from and make sure you talk to Evan Sheely. He's THE MAN to talk to. He can give you real good price on new gear.....40% off on Alembics. They have large used gear too...so check them out! email me and I'll give you their number! *********LEVEL 42 STICKERS********** For those of you requested free sticker from me....I didn't forget about you! JON ------------------------------ Subject: Vinyl & The Level 42 Elevator Ride From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 11:01:53 -0400 (EDT) Hey all, Winston here. You know, the guy with the dusty, clicky, scratched up vinyl that John V keeps mentioning! (ha,ha,ha) Hey John, half the problem is probably that I have a very cheap turntable. Emphasis on the 'cheap'. Only cost me $79.00 new, and it came with the cartridge, so I'm sure you all get the picture. Anyway, John, If you are up to the task, I can send you the vinyl and you can do a direct vinyl to Dat or hardrive dub. ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE!! :-) Let me know if this interests you, because frankly if someone sends me better vinyl, my cheap turntable will probably hold the quality back. And I know we want to get the best quality we can. Also, I don't want MY picture in the liner notes with a caption saying : "If these tracks skip, hum, or tick - it's because of the dude pictured below" Now, on to my Level 42 elevator ride. Last week I was leaving work with a Tower Records bag filled with 5-6 Level 42 12' singles. (i was scanning the art work on the company scanner) A couple of people made a comment about me still having records, and they asked what the records were. Of course i was a bit hesistant to say Level 42, and have everyone look at me like I was crazy. (then again, that would be expected here in NY, right) Anyway, I passed the bag to guy who works in Eddie Murphy's production company, which is on the floor below mine. He pulled out a record and said 'Wow, Level 42, I love that band! That kinda' suprised me, and of course a couple of people chimed in about 'something about you'. The real surprise was an older woman who said 'I remember them, that guy on bass is real funky', which got everyone on the elevator laughing. Probably because she had to be at least 50 years old. That was a very pleasant, suprising elevator ride. Much better than the usual - everyone stare at the walls kinda' ride. Oh, if it sounds like a bit much for an elevator ride, I happen to work on the 49th floor, and the thing must have stopped on every #%$ floor! Oh, Here is yet another updated list of people 'confirmed' for the Vegas Levelfest taking place June20 - June 22nd. 19 people confirmed so far!! Although, I would have liked to know what Level 42 would have ended up sounding like had they kept Gary and made a few more albums. I mean, the songs on SATS are all good, and I personally think that Guaranteed is a great album (except for 'The Ape' and 'With A Little Love' of course), but the instruments sound much more like real instruments and less like synthesized instruments on Guaranteed. Hey...! Now _I'm_ boring _you_ with what I think! Oh well... On a non-Level subject, yesterday I bought the new INXS album 'Elegantly Wasted'. This is a cool album. Especially the title song. From: Dave Brown Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 14:24:59 -0500 I forgot to list the CDs I'm trying to find! I don't know how to submit things to put in the digest but I have a plea to broadcast to the Lovers of LEVEL 42 and I'm trying all the ways I can to get results. Here is the message: To all of you lucky people who LOVE Level 42 as much as I do and were able to follow them in the 80s and get all their releases. I've had World Machine for a couple of years and really love the song Something About You. For some reason, I started listening to that CD more often and came to really enjoy the whole album. So I thought, umm, if this stuff is this good, I wonder if they have any more good releases. I thought since Something About You was really the only song on the radio of theirs I've ever heard, that there may not be any more (you know, ONE HIT WONDER BANDS.) I then found Forever Now and was FLOORED! Then I found Running in the Family and was FLOORED again. I ordered Guaranteed and YES, you guessed it, I'm getting used to being on the floor where Level 42 is concerned. I pride myself in recognizing quality music like the Beatles and Moody Blues and write and record music myself in my own recording studio so I could not believe that a band so creative and different yet strangely melodic could not have become MEGA STARS. But you know in the music business it's a lot of who you know and not just how good you are. It makes me angry to think that these wonderful artists got passed over (at least in the US - I don't know about Europe.) I also wish I had a lot of money because I would seriously invest in re-marketing their music even though the band has broken up. They were just ahead of their time is all I guess. The bottom line for me is that here is a band that has written music that I enjoy about as much as the Beatles (and that's a lot!) I wish I could get a message to them to thank them for their time, effort, and creative abilities and appologize for a world that has no taste. Today's music totally lacks imagination. So much for my soap box lecture. I'll get to the point. I still have 6 (count them - 6!!!!) wonderful releases yet to enjoy in this life but can't find them because they're not made anymore. I'm not even sure if they were all made in CD or not. But I need some help from somebody who has all their stuff. With the new writeable CDs, I could make copies if someone were to let me pay them to let me make copies. There's a lot of ways to do it. It could possibly be done nearby at a music store or whatever or I could provide a generous deposit and make the copies myself. Whatever the case, I hope someone out there will have pitty on my poor deprived self and help me to get my EARS on those other releases! Either way, I will search and search and search from here on out until I find that music! I can get you the address if you need it. Bruce Harfield ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King for president From: N Collier Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 22:38:16 +0100 It had crossed my mind to petition the authorities on the Isle of Wight to recognise our boys in some way. If we don't do it, who will? I'm not sure what we could suggest. Maybe a mention in the New Year's Honours List is aiming a little high (in other words, for non-UK subscribers, a Knighthood (Sir) or some other honour (MBE, OBE etc)). I really do think that it would be a gross injustice if our boys were overlooked, especially, as I pointed out in my letter, Mark has remained so conspicuously loyal to the island. Perhaps a more parochial honour would be more suitable - something smaller and more closely linked with the Isle of Wight. If I can find out a suitable contact to send suggestions to then here's what we could do: 1. Draft a standard basic letter including contact address and post it on the Digest 2. Everyone copies the letter into their favourite word processing package (or copies it by hand for that 'personal touch'), alters it where they think fit (bearing in mind, it probably won't be read since we're mailing en-masse and all letters are the same) prints it out and signs it. 3. Everyone sends their copy of the letter to me (directly or via a central go-between in their respective country - will save money and make my poor postwoman's job a lot easier) 4. I forward all of the letters in one go to the contact - it would be too irritating and intimidating to send them all separately - with a covering letter explaining what my package contains. We need of course to present a reasoned and convincing claim explaining why Mark et al should be honoured and perhaps suggest a few fitting tributes (streets, parks, boats, buildings named after them - hell, maybe even a statue - with an enormous granite Alembic - perhaps stuck into the ground head-first as in 'Sun Goes Down' video, it would make an excellent cenotaph....whooaah - sorry, got a bit carried away there. Anyway, you all get the idea. So, start thinking of all the reasons (without being too sicophantic) why our boys deserve a special honour. And give some thought too to what form their accolade could take. 500 letters from people all over the world would be a pretty convincing argument! Oh, and it might be a good idea to keep this secret from the band (ie. don't tell Crockford etc) - just because it sould be a great surprise for the boys if it does achieve something. I'm an American who doesn't know of these royal things. Secondly, I was wondering if, in the UK and Europe, Karaoke was popular. You know, when you can go to an establishment and sing your favorite songs along with the prerecorded instrumental track. It is fairly popular in the USA and when I have gone to one of these places that has karoake, there are no Level 42 songs to choose from. There are many songs that I've never heard of but no Level. So, if karaoke exists in the UK and/or Europe, has anyone ever seen any Level on the roster? I have all of them and, Sadly, they are all the same. Funny thing is, they all have their own. different sonic atributes. The 12" has a slight channel imbalance and is overall a little veiled sonically. My 7" is noiser of course and less dynamic but the drums sound a little more present. The Breaker beer flexi is a 7" cut at 33 rpm. Believe it or not, it is the warmest sounding, not muted, but the bass almost sounds punched up in the mix and is more fluid. BTW, I cleaned the flexi before I listened to/ recordered it to MD and you wouldn't believe the shit that came off of it! It looks like it sat ona bar somewhere fo a month. I just kept getting more and more yellowish brown crap off of it every time I cleaned. 4 times! It really doesn't sound half bad though. SO in closing I can verify that. Love Games live on Weave Your Spell UK 12" b-side Weave Your Spell UK 7" b-side Breaker white flexi Are DEFINETELY the same performance and Winston and Lars O. say that the version on the German 12" is just an early fade version of the same performance.
