Continuing on with the "obscure ways that 42 is the root of my life" thing, Did any UK types see the results of the JD Power/Top Gear car survey last week? I fell off my chair! My jaw was on the floor! Yes, where did MY car appear in the list? Number 42! (out of 87). Middle of the road, that's me. AOL Problems - AOL has had problems with e-mail for the last few day, but it is supposed to be fixed now. Winston ------------------------------ Subject: AOL Sucks, AYGB From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Mon, 14 Apr 1997 06:36:31 -0700 * Dirkies, I have had the same problem sending e-mails to my AOL friends. I have been trying to send Winston a message for a week and it keeps getting bounced back. They need to buy some more equipment and not worry about buying Compuserve with money they don't have. Anyway, I just wanted to assure you that you aren't the only one having that problem. * No one ever answered the person who asked what AYGB means. It stands for As Years Go By, which is the title of the first disc burned by this digest. The full name is As Years Go By: Level 42 B-sides 1980-1994, and is comprised of all the B-sides they recorded, with the exception of one or two from Forever Now. Return of the Handsome Rugged Man, At This Great Distance, 42 and others can be found here. Many of the tracks never made it onto any CD single and can only be found on vinyl, so we felt it would be great to have them all in one place and cleaned up for good listening. The folks on here who burned it did an excellent job and the cover and liner notes are good, so if you are a newbie on the digest you should definitely get it. Polydor nor any other label will probably ever release anything like this, so you shouldn't fear that. Lolita P.S. Morgan - sorry to hear about the losses of your girlfriend and all your e-mails. You probably lost the dates I'll be in France as well, so I'll tell you again: I arrive in Paris the morning of June 2nd and leave for London the night of June 3rd, so I think we should all get together on the 2nd and go out that night. ------------------------------ Subject: Sir Thunderthumbs From: J Shuford Date: Mon, 14 Apr 1997 08:22:55 -0700 (PDT) Well done, Nigel! I don't really know how this system works, but is there a chance we could do some mass writing to petition Her Royal Majesty to consider the case of Mark King? I suppose the fact that Level 42 was one of Diana's favourite bands won't carry much weight anymore, but hey! Nigel neglected to mention the Children Say charity and the Alan Murphy fund as well, I believe. Perhaps it will be a problem because of Mark's tabloid reputation over there (if that's still following him), but I think that a letter from the Digest en masse and letters from the Brits would be a nice tribute. Actually, it would be really nice for all of them to become Freemen, but that may be pushing too hard. By the way, are the remaining Beatles Freemen or no? Will, I have to give you a definite yes and no to that (:-0) . Words Of A Mountain is the only Wally solo work I've heard, so I can't comment beyond that album. Yes, it definitely is "new age". But if you listen to the type of sounds he uses you can get a pretty good idea of how he influenced Level 42. Put another way, if you listen to an L42 track (e.g. It's Over) and mentally delete the bass and drums, You'll get a bit of a clue as to Words of a Mountain. IMHO Wally Badarou and Thomas Dolby are the two greatest synth gods of our time. -------- N Collier wrote: > On the same day I heard that the director of the film > 'The English Patient' (are we Brits snobs or what? - Oh, you mean that story written by a Canadian? AOL has screening functions that allow us to exclude Spam/junkmail originating in certain domains from reaching us (there's quite a junkmail problem due to the high number of AOL subscribers at advertisers' fingertips). Past & Presence: The B-side years. Now, I must confess, I just started using that as the name, because I hated saying "Live Disc" as it seems so cool, so If you all want a different name, just email and... forget it! I love that name... I am going to keep using it! You can't stop me!! {The sound of John V being dragged kicking and screaming from the room in a straightjacket} Well. Now that's out of the way... Here are the track listings, just in case you'd forgotten. I have now listed what the source was, and if anyone out there has a pristine copy of the vinyl tracks, you can email me. Winston has given me a good source to start with, but they are a touch lowlevel clicky.. so I want to make sure that we get the best to start with: Disc One: 1 00:02:00 01 Dune Tune (Weave 12") Vinyl to DAT 2 05:19:28 02 Love Games (Weave 12") Vinyl to DAT 3 11:18:39 03 Turn It On (PP Delete) Vinyl to DAT - VERY CLEAN 4 17:02:36 04 Mr. Pink (PP Delete) Vinyl to DAT - VERY CLEAN 5 23:12:08 05 88 (PP Deleted) Vinyl to DAT - VERY CLEAN 6 35:55:13 06 Microkid (Wembley) CD 7 42:18:21 07 Physical Presence (Live) CD 8 48:00:48 08 Silence (live) CD 9 53:04:58 09 Man (live) CD 10 60:05:59 10 Overtime (Overtime CD5) CD 11 64:53:44 11 Guaranteed (Overtime CD5) CD 12 68:55:22 12 If You Were Mine (Over CD5) CD Total Running Time: 73:54:11 ----------------- Disc Two: The Overflow 1 00:02:00 13 Her Big Day (Live) CD 2 04:25:45 14 The Sun Goes Down (Live) CD 3 09:54:06 15 88 (Chinese Way) Vinyl to DAT 4 15:16:30 16 Turn It On (Micro-Kid 12") Vinyl to DAT 5 20:41:35 17 Follow Me (Live Remix) Vinyl to DAT 6 24:42:18 18 Something About You (10th Prince's Trust) CD 7 29:52:57 19 Running in the Family ('87 Prince's Trust) CD 8 34:55:15 20 The Spirit is Free (Guaranteed Live) Laserdisc to DAT Total Running Time (So Far:): 39:35:64 Add to the list the follow tracks, each from the Prince's Trust shows (Extra special THANKS go to the flying thumb himself.... Since it's the same as the 12", we'll stick with that one. Takeo is also sending the "Fait Acompli" on Laserdisc, so perhaps there will be some goody on it that we haven't concidered yet. A note about a delay I am afraid to tell you all about.... I will be delaying the release of the first disc a couple of weeks to allow for trying to track down cleaner sources on the Vinyl. Again, this isn't because Winston did a bad job, just that we all know how much vinyl ages, and if someone has a mint copy of any of the vinyl tracks, that we can get to a great turntable with a DAT player, then, all the better. Then the second issue, which is that Zap will be touring the universe for the better part of May, and therefore won't be able to burn discs. We ask that you all please be patient with us, as it will well worth it. Thanks kids... and keep those "I've got something rare to donate" emails comming.. we have almost filled the second disc! Trillian: For your best value on a good slappin' machine ($300 range), check out the Peavey Foundation at http://www.peavey.com/division/mi/guitars/bass/index.html Or, if you want a neck-thru for a little more, check out the Carvin LB-70 at http://www.carvin.com/cgi-bin/products.pl?retrieve=product&product=lb70 If you can afford a thousand bucks or more, go with an Alembic Epic (http://www.alembic.com/) or a Spector CR series (http://www.ssdbass.com/). I personally have an Epic, a Spector NS2a, and a Carvin fretless, so I know from whence I speak. But I certainly wouldn't be ashamed to play a Foundation, it's your best deal. By the way, anyone wishing to view the Alembic Mark King model, can do so at their lovely new website Alembic.com - it's under Signature Deluxe model. "I just heard the Big Bang...with my own freakin' ears!" - Don Z. ------------------------------ Subject: VINYL RULES !, Forever Now... From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 08:20:07 +0200 Hey gals/guys ! 1] You know, during the first LowLandsLevelFeest I bought a vinyl copy of Mark's Influences for a louzy 10 guilders, but never got to play it. Yesterday I put it on my turntable and man was I surprised by the sound quality ! I was totaly blown away by the way Mark's bass sounded. I turned of the lights and listenend and now I am convinced: the bass sounds MUCH better on vinyl than on CD. Pleasantly, I think the record was new, or at least good as new, so very little ticks and clicks.... It just felt as if the "guys" (of course it's mostly Mark) were playing right in front of me......everything sounded so natural, so "live". Directly after listening to "The essential", I put the CD version in my CD player and listened. Although the high tones were better and clearer it just sounded much more unrealistic. When I concentrated on the bass again, I felt it was MUCH better on VINYL. The overal sound of the CD was more "spread" between the speakers, but that only made it sound unrealistic. P.S. Were the RCA albums ever released on vinyl ? 2] The past weeks, I have had the constant urge of listening to the Forever Now album in my car, and at home. I played both RCA and Resurgence again and again. MY GOD WHAT A GREAT ALBUM THIS IS ! I think it is now my favorite album. When I first bought it, I liked it right away. This wasn't the case for me with the two previous albums (SATS and Guaranteed). Guaranteed still is to me, their weakest album, from a Level 42 point of view. Maybe from a pop/rock point of view this one is their best, but it was just too far from the "level sound" for me. It seems the guys returned "home" on FN. Well needless to say that Phil has a very big part in this. Technicaly it is absolutly their best. Listen to it once again. Close the doors, dim the lights, pull the plug on your phone, close your eyes...... Pay attention to all the marvelous details.... How RCA f*cked up with promoting this album ! I also decided that I think the RCA verion of Billy's gone is the best.(I really like the YOWYOWYOW-loop , which stands more in front on the RCA version) Best track on the album: The sunbed song. This _IS_ Level 42. It is a clear reference to the "early" days, even if Mike hadn't sung "Turn it on...." at the end. Listen to Phil's drumming...... Sorry Garry, you _are_ a great drummer, but Phil is _THE_ Level 42 drummer, and always will be.... If this would have been the last track on the CD, the artistic "circle" of Level 42 would have been closed. Just boring you with my feelings.......
