Norm Kuk ------------------------------ Subject: CDindexes, CDupdate From: "dirk.vael" Date: 10 Jan 97 11:44:08 Hi there, first a note about Zak's posting about indexes: 1. I agree there are not many CD players who support index selecting, but top-notch CD players (above $500) have the ability to do that (like my Denon DCD1015, $700). Most CDplayers display the indexes, but can't select them like you do with tracks (|<< or >>|). 2. the reason why I proposed this is simply to have SOME structure in a live gig CD. a single track single index live CD is pretty stupid IMHO. SO those who have an index-capable player would benefit from it, for the others, it is always nice to SEE that a new song begins... 3. A continous energetic live gig with a sudden 2 second silence inbetween all songs is *really* silly, not?? So that's out of the question! Next, here's an update of the CD projects Hum hum, it's getting shape! Over 30 discs to burn already... Oh oh, what have I done !! ;-)) 1. (get it?) I have that Vital Information album you are searching for, 'Global Beat'. Good album. Drop me a line and I'll sling the tape for ya' Bharfield, the 'White Funky' is a bootleg CD pressed out of Italy I believe. It's an early 1981 (is that right?) concert that was recorded from the audience. It's very cool to hear some of the early material, but the sound quality is sorely lacking. The worst part is that they cut 'Foundation & Empire' down to 3 minutes!! Blasphemy I say! Worth checking out if you are a completist, like I am. As far as Sat Nite Live goes, yes it's the U.S. version of the show. Tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: BHarfield @ aol.com From: "Kelvin A. Levels" Date: Fri, 10 Jan 97 08:31:26 CST You might try Audiophile Imports to to get a copy of the White Funky... (http://www.cyboard.com/audiophile.html)...They're overpriced, but they may have it....BTW, I would love to get copies of that footage you have...I would definitely consider it rare! Take care! Kelvin ------------------------------ Subject: The digest From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Fri, 10 Jan 1997 09:49:27 -0500 (EST) To Everyone, I seems like the digest is getting back to the "pre-holiday" way it was. I don't know if people get funky over the holidays or what but it's nice to have it back to the pre - JoeP days!! To Dirkies: Just to go on record - I'l like a copy of your revised AYGB disc (if it happens) even though I'm not in Europe. If it means anything at all, my dad is from the UK and my mom is from Germany, so that makes me a Euro-boy!! If you open up your offer to the US, put me down for one. To Steve Lebenson: Your post had no "address" that I could see. Send me an e-mail so I can e-mail you back regarding an item. I'd like a copy of the lyric sheet to The Early Tapes. To Jakko and Alan Holdsworth fans: Thanks for the input regarding AH. I thought there was someone on the digest who wanted some Jakko stuff so I checked out my record shop. I specifically wanted to know if the two CD's, Kingdom Of Dust and Mustard Gas and Roses were good or not, and that they had a second copy of Kingdom. A personal e-mail is best. (and fastest) To Link holders: I've been checking out some of the Level 42 links and they are neat. My modem is SSSLLLOOOWWW so I don't do the graphics and my computer has no sound board so I can read it only. But soon, I'm glad to report, three words, M M X !!! Now that MMX is with us, it's time to get on board and get my own computer. I've been waiting since summer!!! Soon I'll be able to download cool graphics, sound etc. Now if they could put a few more hours into each day, I'd be a happy man. To AOL members: I just discovered Instant Messages thanks to Mikey butting into my stream of consciousness. I'm surfing away, minding my own business, when BAMM!!! there he is!!! The chat was nice but I hit a wrong key and "click" he was gone. Same to jwall the next day. Regarding favorite tracks: I've rediscovered Overtime live CD5. I hit the disc repeat button and groove away.... The machine stops. Ha Ha got you all fooled for a minute. We've both finished recording for Tim's album, I had a great time, but I'll leave it to Tim to expalin the rest.......Here you go friend. Well thanks Jason. It's a mellow funky rap/soul song with layers of 70's organ and crooning vocals, and tonight we laid down the bass, a combination of bass axe and Chapman stick, which I'd never seen before. If you haven't seen these things, I seriously reccommend that you do. Jason handled the very weird changes excellently, and I now have a fantastic basis for laying down the rest of the track. Is this the first collaboration spawned by the Digest - is this a first? I think it just might be. Anyway thanks to the Digest for merely existing in the first place, or tonight wouldn't have happened! From: Marc_Dupuis @ MADISONUSA.CCMAIL.CompuServe.COM Date: 10 Jan 97 15:20:17 EST Winman actually said... >My favorite has always >been 'The Return of The Handsome Rugged Man' there is just something >about that tune tune that rocks. I cant seem to get enough of Phil's >drums on that tune. Yeah! Phil's the best! Mighty Maonmaondogcanine (sorry, I can't spell) probably said... >'at this great distance' (if Phil could only play drums like this...) Yeah! Gary's the best! Ran Collins must have said... >For the drummers out there, what do you think of Bill's style of playing >technical, electronic, almost irregular, drumming? Excellent, I really liked his roto-tom phase as well - UK!! I saw these guys and I fell to my knees in awe. I love his stiff arm syncopation, he doesn't groove like a Phil or even Gary, but his playing is eclectic, bombastic, and concussive. (Huh?) Well, if you listen to "In The Dead Of Night" from the first UK album, those words will squirt out of your piehole. Bozzio was amazing with UK as well. The epitome of prog-rock. Well, besides Genesis' Lamb Lies Down. And ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. And Gentle Giant's... Jeezus I can ramble. I'll shutup now. -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: Byrdman's "Play Me" List- The Remixes From: ByrdLvl42 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 10 Jan 1997 20:31:20 -0500 (EST) In a perfect world we all agree, and I certainly do want to bite the hand that fed me (After all, Mike42 was the first digest fan I spoke to, and was the inspiration for the upcoming Denver Level Fest), but I had some disagreements with his choices (as I'm sure others may have had with my list). Here are my Siskel & Ebert-esque reviews (Siskel & Ebert-esque review: One where the opinion really has no expert basis other than the fact it is given by one who enjoys the medium. Also where critisim is given only to display varying tatses) MIKEY42: LESSONS IN LOVE (Long Distance Relationship song) I first heard this track while on holiday in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Every time that I made a phone call to the USA, I heard this series of EEENNKKK's whilst it was connecting my call, it remided me of the synth at the beginning of the song, as I was calling up an 'old' friend, but to no avail they weren't ever home. BYRDMAN BEST LONG DISTANCE-RELATIONSHIP SONG "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" also "To Be With You Again"- Here are two song that show Boon's melancholy poet's heart. It was once said that to be a great poet, one must suffer for his art; in Boon's case, his dues must have been paid with a ballon payment type interest. The older her gets, the more sorrowful his lanmentations get. Someone gimmie a hanky. MIKEY42: HER BIG DAY (Movie Soundtrack) I felt this should have been the lead song for the film with Hugh Grant, Four Wedding and a Funeral. Or Mariel's Wedding, but Abba must have bought the rights for that film. If you change your mind....! BYRDMAN: BEST SONG TO PLAY AT A WEDDING RECEPTION "Her Big Day"- Its a great laugh of the song in a rented tux and a bunch of your buddies playing backup (try it...). Not only will it get Granny dancing, and Dad grinin' (after all he's paying for it all ("Deep inside her Father's happy/Perfect irony...")), but, like "Wooley Bully", and "The Chicken Dance", its an infecteous little dancable hit. I can't play this song without humming the entire bass start to finish. Ow! MIKEY42: GRESHAM BLUES (Ireland's finest hotel) Makes me want to watch the Glasgow Rangers lose at football, while in Dublin drinking a nice ale in a small, quaint pub! BYRDMAN: BEST TAG SONG FOR A RADIO BLUES SHOW "Gresham Blues"- Which is how this song came into my heart. I was doing a campus radio show (1989-90) of Jazz and Blues, when I only went by the name B-man (I've since grown up to a full name!). Has to be their SECOND Jazziest piece (See "Byrdman's "Play Me" List for #1). Also, it kicks the snot out of that crap they play at the end of "Fraiser". Maybe if we sent some sheet music...? MIKEY42: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF (Bummin around sort of song) As Mark was quoted, this song makes all of us seem quite materialistic and quite like a pack of twerps during the 80's with our walkmans and sunglasses at night! Can I have that Swatch in the window, it will match my OP shirt! BYRDMAN: BEST BUMMIN AROUND SORT OF SONG or WHAT TO DO WHEN IT SNOWS ON YOUR DESOLATE MOUNTAIN PARADISE "The Pursuit of Accidents" and "Heathrow"- Slap, Slap Slap (Goes Mark on his Bass), Tap, Tap Tap, (Goes Mike when the funk hits his face). These two make want to clean my apartment with CD remote in hand to keep repeating the tracks. Or, more likely, do my Bevis dancing bit (Slap, Slap, Slap, Ugh, Ugh, Ugh!!!) MIKEY42: FAVOURITE CONCERT (That I was at) That's not hard since I only went to TWO shows, Royal Albert Hall, mainly for it's impact! BYRDMAN: BEST CONCERT Have a heart on a guy, will ya? I HAVEN'T SEEN A LEVEL 42 CONCERT!!!! Leave a dying dog be! MIKEY42: FAVOURITE L42 Band Member: Like I would tell everybody BYRDMAN: FAVOURITE BAND MEMBER Ain't it obvious? Now, some NEW Catagories: BEST PERFORMANCE BY A SUPPORTING BAND MEMBER "Annie McCaig" & "Wally Badarou"- To win this award all Annie had to do was do a gig pregnant; to tie with Annie all Wally had to do was be the "Ghost" in the "World Machine". Annie has the voice that helped make "Tears for Fears" great, and helped Mark "find his falsetto". Wally has the musical sense that applies both solo and with groups. Riddle me this, caped crusader, without Wally the music seemed missing something (Staring At the Sun), but with him the music seemed to full to need anything else ("Something About You", Forever Now)? Hummmmmm????? BEST COMEBACK SCENRIO Our boys at NORAD, down at base LEVEL 42, has developed a macro computer simulation series (the "Deep Thought" strategem) that has ran several hundred million comeback scenarios. (Not that they should have need to comeback if the record companies ever get off their duff and give L42 the marketing they deserve.) Here is the best of what our American know-how came up with : "The Hollywood Shuffle"- Lets face it, SAY is not only the best L42 song, it is one of the most memerable songs of the eighties, and a powerful ballad in any era. The type of "Stand By Me" ballad that is bound to warrant a re-make. If one is done, chances are it will be done for movie soundtrack (as all new music seems to make its way down this path). With the right movie, this song can be billed with the movie (remember the whole deal with E. Clapton's "Change the World" for J. Travolta's "Phenomena"). Of course it will become a hit again, and the door opens for a new U.S. tour and album (labeled "Strategem"? (those who know can laugh quietly to themselves)). BEST REASON WHY MARK KING SHOULD WIN "BASS PLAYER" MAGAZINE'S "BASS PLAYER OF THE YEAR, 1996" Two words- SELF TAUGHT! More to come on Monday. I gotta run to take my driving test. (In the snow no less.) I'm buying LAW this weekend, as well as The Remix Collection. More news from Byrdland as it comes. And a very big THANK YOU to all those who have written in the past week. I promise I will write back as many as I can this weekend! Till then...
