I was first introduced to Level 42 in 1986 (at age 11) when seeing the video for "Something About You" on MTV. I borrowed World Machine from my local library, expecting the rest of the songs to be boring. I was wrong. My collection so far includes WM and Level Best. Standing In The Light is supposedly their best, but I'm not ready to pay $40 for an import. Here are some questions I've been pondering: 1. Why do "Hot Water" and "The Chant Has Begun" appear on both True Colors and World Machine? 2. Who writes what? The credits are confusing. On Level Best, "Children Say" is credited to Mark King alone, but on Running In The Family the lyrics are credited to one of the Goulds. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #98 From: pfpd @ pobox.com (Pat Flanagan) Date: Sun, 7 Apr 1996 14:55:46 -0400 (EDT) >Anyway, I have further reservations about Mark in Genesis. I would think that Chester Thompson, the EXCELLENT drummer who accompanied them on their live tours, would probably be in the running for becoming a full-fledged member of the band. He's been their live drummer since the late 70's, if I remember correctly. From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Sun, 7 Apr 1996 21:31:33 -0400 (EDT) Folks, for some bizarre reaons, I blew away all 1996 digest archives before issue #96. I was able to restore 1-92 from a backup, but am still missing 93, 94 and 95. If anyone has these in their mailbox, could you please send them to me at ? His go at acting in "Something About You" and "My Father's Shoes" was quite nice, he's always said (Sir) Laurence Olivier is one of his idols. > Saw a new STING concert on VH-1 last night and there was Dominic Miller > playing guitar right beside him..... So it looks like he'll be touring with > STING.... I saw a bit of that, I *think* it was an older concert, you can tell by Sting's hair-line. But, yes, I'm sure both Dominic and Vinnie are wasting their time and talents touring w/ Gordon. > I always just thought it was a pun on "The Pursuit Of Excellence" myself. Or, maybe during writing or recording the song "TPoAccidents" someone goofed up, but it made for a great part of the tune, you know, those happy little accidents. so they were in 'pursuit' of such things... The thought of Mark having anything to do with Genesis is disturbing, unless Bill Bruford re-joined on drums and they re-named the group and NEVER played any Genesis tunes... > January 1988 Modern Drummer Interview with Phil Gould Would anyone like a > transcription? Does everyone already have one? It already is at The Homepage, but thanks. Here's a new release that ties into our little Level 42 family: Warren Cuccurullo _Thanks To Frank_ Warren is ex-Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, and current Duran Duran guitarist, he's quite amazing. His mates on this album are Nick Beggs (Chapman Stick & bass) on 6 tracks (one of them live) and Pino Palladino bass on 5 tracks (Pino played bass on Mike's solo _Changes_, therefore the tie-in). The drummer is the brilliant Vinnie Colaiuta on 10 of the 11 tracks (Warren's bro is on the live track). Vinnie cooks on this album, stunning work, which makes me sick when I know he can do this, but instead hangs out with Sting. For you drummers, pick up this album. Guitarists, Warren is great, he gets great sounds from his 'axe'. Very prolific. On the bass side, as usual Pino and Nick lay down some serious bottom, but they unfortuantly don't really 'go off' at any point. All the tracks were recorded on 1-3 takes over 2 days, giving it that "live" feel King put into _Influences_. All in all an album well worth checking out. The best release of the year, so far. Any questions, feel free to write me. I would like to also mention a big "thank you" to Zak for getting the whole t-shirt project off the ground. --jay Copied from letter by: Level42-request @ worldmachine.com (Level42 Digest) ------------------------------ Subject: Even more replies from the CD info people!
