Well, if anyone's interested in a bit of a kneesup, I plan on a pilgrimage to the bar during a weekend in early April 96. I'm down in Bournemouth for a function on Saturday night so, since I live in Newcastle which (to Brits) is miles away, I'm taking the opportunity to check out Mark's bar while I'm there. If fellow Levelheads fancy "getting it on" then I'd like to hear from you, or if our overseas friends can think of a poster or momento or something they'd like to leave at the bar (or perhaps I can put photos of the bar along with a review on my web pages) let me know. In the mean time, I hope you had a good Christmas (I spent Christmas back in my home town of Hull, where people drinking in town centre pubs celebrated the birth of Jesus in the traditional way - vomiting in shop doorways and having fistfights). Play Me was also on a single, for Forever Now (the blue one). For the Marcus fans out there: Tales is up for a Grammy for "contemporary jazz" along with other non-jazz bands such as the disgusting Foreplay...the simple fact that Joshua Redman, Marcus Roberts, and Miles Davis weren't even nominated (not too mention they *are* jazz) shows how silly this whole things is... My notes on the on-going Duran Duran conversation: I'm not a big fan, but Andy Taylor is pretty damn good (I think he's working on a solo album) and Warren Cuccarrulo is amazing, he too is working on a solo album. My name is Jon and I am a Software Engineer living on the South Coast of England, near Bournemouth. I first got into L42 by borrowing a copy of A Physical Presence from the local library. One listen to Love Games and I was hooked! I managed to see the band 5 times in all: Birmingham NEC twice (including the concert featured in the Fait Accompli video), Hammersmith Odeon (December '90), Portsmouth Guildhall and Bournemouth International Centre. The last couple of concerts were the best, as they started to play some of the old stuff again, like Mr. Pink. I have quite an extensive collection of L42 recordings, including every UK release since 1985, which is what brings me to the reason for this post:- I managed to get the Resurgence release of FN, and was slightly disappointed in that all the "new" tracks except one have been B-sides on the singles released from FN. The one exception is Time Will Heal (an excellent track). Rob on Digest v96 #1 thought that Play Me was also a new track, but it appeared as an extra track on the UK CD single of Forever Now along with Past Lives. By the way Rob, you're track listing of the UK release of FN is almost correct: Romance is included and the last two tracks should be reversed. That's all for now, Jon. -- Jon Riding E.Mail jon @ stanpit.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Subject: CDWhen? :) From: "J.S. Has anyone out > there had a postive experience with CD Now??? > > Cheers.. > Joel I've heard CDNow horror stories, but the worst treatment I've ever gotten from them was in their inability to get two import CDs that I've tried to order. I've recently gotten L42's "Early Tapes" CD, Boon's solo album on CD, and Mark's solo album on CD, all from CDNow. Each took about a week and a half to get to me after I initially ordered them and only cost me about $20 a piece. If you get this stuff from Audiophile, you're going to PAY. Whether they had it to me in two days or not, I'm NOT about to pay $30-$40 for ONE CD from anyone, be it Audiophile or one of the thousand other online CD services which charge TOO DAMN MUCH for import CDs. Back when I was interested in trying to pick up a copy of the Japanese version of FN, I checked Audiophile for availability...I think the price the guy told me was in the neighborhood of $40... that's ridiculous. Especially when I already had the UK RCA version, which only cost me $17.99 at a local Tower Records. NO TWO SONGS are worth $22. The problem with CDNow is that they're famous for offering import CDs which they have no way in hell of getting a hold of. This leads to people getting ticked off about waiting and waiting for imports...most likely because CDNow waits 30 days before breaking the news about not being able to get a certain selection. If you order an import from CDNow and don't have it within two weeks, odds are you're not going to get it, not from them anyway. If there's one good thing about Audiophile (besides their quickness) its that they know their product. The guy I talked to on the phone knew all the ins and outs of all the Level 42 CDs and solo CDs that they were offering. I think its just too bad that they charge so damn much for their stuff...c'est la vie! Just my $.02 worth... Toodles! ------------------------------ Subject: Hello... I'm a bit new! From: "smashie @ dircon.co.uk" Date: Sun, 7 Jan 1996 17:44:47 +0000 Levelheads hi! I'm a newbie to this list so here's a quick intro: I am David, 21 years old, radio producer/student, bass/keyboard/guitar player living in London. I got into Level 42 between Hot Water and Something About You, progressing through World Machine, Running in the Family and Level Best... and subsequently going through the older albums (which led me onto a further love of jazz-funkers like Herbie Hancock). At such an impressionable age (fifteen) I was wandering round record collectors fairs getting hold of all the twelve inch singles I could afford - with my greatest acheivement, a 'The Sun Goes Down' one-sided white label for three quid. Now I'm out in the big wide world I can satisfy those cravings for white labels and imports. No I haven't ever visited Joe Daflos (although I grew up in Dorset so why I didn't get a ferry across to the IOW I'll never work out) and yes I can do a couple of Mark's bass lines on my bass... but it's not quite time to give up the day job! I have just one question at the moment (although I'm sure loads will follow) - what does Mark shout at the beginning of the Pursuit of Accidents (on the Pursuit of Accidents album)? I'd love to hear the answer - and look forward to reading future digests! ****************** smashie @ dircon.co.uk ****************** ------------------------------ Subject: Misc Prince's Trust stuff, etc. From: flanagan @ mwci.net (Pat Flanagan) Date: Sun, 7 Jan 1996 11:18:28 -0600 I've been busy the past few days, and am just catching up, so I'm sure there may be a few already covered or dead topics here. Sorry. >Arcadia "So Red The Rose" on CD Yeah, it came out a stretch after the LP, but no new music. It's a shame, as I kinda liked the Arcadia album, especially the single version of "The Flame," which I used to play incessantly on my old college radio show. >blond guy with the great voice I believe that was John Farnham, whose only real notice around here was "You're The Voice," a fantastic song which was thoroughly demolished in a remake by Heart. >I recall reading something at the time in a musicians' mag that Clapton >had immense trouble playing the Running In The Family riff, so perhaps >his bored expression comes from him mentally sitting that song out. Really? Now, I'm not a guitar player, but even I could play that riff. What's wrong, Eric, not so God-like anymore? Actually, I agree with whomever said that he always has a bored expression on his face. Guess I've never been much of a Clapton fan. >(Bad lyric - "Ice ice baby, Vanilla Ice ice baby...." - Ice Ice Baby - >Vanilla Ice) Well, for all the slogging (most of it well deserved) that the Iceman got, I still think "Ice Ice Baby" is a masterpiece. I'm not joking. It was and still is a great dance song. I feel the same way about a couple of Milli Vanilli songs, too. If it never came out about the lip synching (and who REALLY cares about that, anyway -- they weren't the first to do it, and won't be the last -- I got the album for the music, not for the two dudes) you'd still hear a few of the songs played in dance clubs. Ok, I'm done with the off topic stuff... Here's an on-topic question. When Boon left the group, he continued with the lyrics for the Staring at the Sun album. His publishing credit is listed as "Rag Ruby Red Productions Ltd." Anyone know where THAT name came from? I'm stumped. I ordered a Little River Band CD and the Level 42 Fait Accompli video and both arrived within a reasonable time and my credit card was not charged until the orders (they were sent separately since the video was out of stock) were actually shipped. I have ordered FN+4 from them since I cannot find it in Toronto. They said to expect a 4 week delay so I won't get bothered until a month has passed. Many of us who grew up in the instant gratification generation forget that not so long ago, we wouldn't have even been able to find out about such releases easily, let alone get hold of them at reasonable prices! Rob, you responded to my last letter, saying... << As far as I'm aware, "Time Will Heal" and "Play Me" were the two tracks no one had ever heard before the Resurgence release. >> "Play Me" was released on the CD single of "Forever Now". I did put down a misnomer there, the Japanese release did have "Learn to Say No" and "Past Lives" as bonus tracks. "Time Will Heal" is the new song on the UK Forever Now album. (FN +4, CD now) The entire listing of the Griffin Release (according to GriffinMusic) is going to be.... Forever Now / Model Friend / Love in a Peaceful World / Romance / Billys Gone / One in a Million / The Sunbed Song / Talking in Your Sleep / Don't Bother Me / Time Will Heal / Learn to Say No As you see, it really isn't the original UK version with the two bonus songs, since it is missing both "All Over You" and "Tired of Waiting". Nor is it the new UK version of Forever Now, since it is missing "The Bends", "Play Me", "Heart on the Line", and "Past Lives". This is looking to me like the palest version of the album. By the way, Rob, your tape was excellent. A fellow engineer has it right now, and will give me his opinions. As soon as I get it back, I'll email you our concensus. P.S.
