Mark 909 King, I cant believe someone else has heard of this! I went to great lengths to get hold of this music. I now have it all on tape, althoug i may add its awful. Many moons ago in some interview or other Mark said he often spent time in his studio making 'House' music. I thought it wouldnt be unheard for him to release it on an independant label and then I heard about Mark 909 King. I have listened to the music many times and there is no hint of this being Mark,in the music or on the cover of the records! So Sorry Luigi, once again I was one step ahead, any more questions? Of course let me know if you want tapes of this music. Also yes, I will ask Crockford about this issue. Talking about rarities as we were. Of Course there was a big hype amongst fans because Polydor were penned to release a rarities album in 1992. This was scrapped when 'The Remixes' didnt do too well(what did they expect at 15 pounds a CD thirteen pounds a cassette'. However I suspect tracks on any rarities album would not be B-sided. There is a difference between a rarities album and a V-sides album! B-sides invariably came from singles which were released in their thousands. Rarities like, Micro Kid-promo only mix was only found on maybe 5000 white label promos at a very maximum. So what do we choose Rarities or B-sides. A rarities album should included the hard to find promo mixes not found on general release items and also unreleased demos and other unheard tracks, this would more than likely have to done with the full cooperation of Polydor and RCA. Even I dont have many original copies of rarities. ie I have 'The Sun Goes Down' promo mix on a one sided white label, Overtime ED-lorimer mix on a one sided 7". Journey To The Powerline on the A side of Elite Dazz 4 but thats not really Level 42. Heaven In My Hands promo only mix on Staring... promo Cd's. Other than that all the extremely rare tracks I have are on tapes ie, Micro Kid promo only mix, The Chant Has Begun (Powermix edit) ETC ETC ETC. A B-sides album would be more feasible if we were to it off our own backs. I dont think the legality is important. After all, look at 'The White Funky' or 'Zurich 1983' or even the classic 'Lessons In Live'. They were all bootlegs and sold all over the world, even by reputable dealers. So, heres my B-sides list. Instrumental Love Forty Two Foundation and Empire (Parts 1 and 2) Wings Of Love (remix '81) Cant Walk You Home (Extended version) Three Words As Years Go By At This Great Distance Beezer One The Return Of The Handsome Rugged Man Freedom Freedom A Gogo Well, they are the essential B-sides that every fan should have. A rarities album would be a whole different list. Obviously my list would be a very rareities album. Bye. If so, is it possible to >play a CD-R in a conventional CD player? I know you can play a >conventional CD in a CD-R drive, but is it vice versa? We're talking about CD-R, which is what you need to record a CD - but when the CD-R is done recording, you pull it out and stick it your average CD player, or your computer's CD-ROM drive or wherever. it's a normal CD-ROM or Audio CD, depending on what you put on it. And you can make audio CDs or even your own compilation CDs with CD-Rs; you just can't copy an audio CD drectly from your CD-ROM drive to the CD-R. You have to copy the songs to your hard drive first then copy them to the CD-R. My name is Sean and I'm new to the list. I'm 20 and have been a fan since the age of 12. I would like to know if anyone has the Live at Wembley tape and if so could I possibly get a copy from someone. I've been looking for this for years. A note to everyone, you might wanna try looking thru a magazine called Goldmine. There are tons of rare and bootleg CD's and vinyl. Sometimes they have Level 42 stuff. One place that does in England is called Esprit. They're excellent to deal with. Oh yeah, I found the Forever Now cd single the other day and I'm in love with those two extra tracks "Play Me" and "Past Lives". Excellent songs. I also found "True Colours" CD in a used bin at a store for $4!!!!! It's an import with an extra song "Our Hero" that goes for over $20 now!!!! What luck. Thanks everyone. ------------------------------ Subject: posters From: "M.D. Robins" Organization: the University of Greenwich Date: Fri, 8 Mar 1996 16:17:15 GMT Hi all, Just a word on posters. My sister did have a Running in the Family one once, it was a bit minimal, just the four members in a small box, with most of the poster all black, and the red and yellow box on top. We ordered it from a company ad in Smash Hits, which is a crappy British teeny magazine. When Level 42 were in their Top40 hits phase, Smash Hits hated them, thinking them far too old and proper a band, preferring instead boy-wonder, image based acts of questionable ability. But this was all ages ago. I doubt they'd still have the posters, even if they have similar or the same advert(s) Worth a try, I suppose. L42 also did had the RITF pose, ( the one being debated on the digest t-shirt debate at the moment ) which was made into a poster for a jeans company ( " we invented denim jackets " MK on the Night Network interview 1987 ) I saw it in a local clothes store but despite offers of bribery and prolonged pleading, they wouldn't give it to me. I think it was Levi's, but don't quote me on that. So for what it's worth.... What RITF CD booklet was THAT photo in? Are you talking about the one where Mark's bending over with the headless bass? I have a big version of that photo, but it's in B/W. Though, that brings up the interesting idea of hand-coloring it in Photoshop, which would look great on a t-shirt... (Though the boys look kind of nerdy in that photo, what with cuffed flood jeans and stiff denim jackets that look straight off the rack with no break-in period.) >Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid about the legality issues, but I think it is a >legitmate concern. I remember a few years back listening to a Queen Latifah CD that had some production and writing done by Mark "The 45" King. This was back when vinyl 45's were still in production, so that was my best guess as to the nickname. Maybe he's renamed himself. My first impression was the Roland 909, which, coincidentally, was noted by Eric at the bottom of the message. I'd be surprised if there is any connection whatsoever. I think it's just another guy with the non-so-uncommon name of Mark King. Personally, I know three Mark Kings, but none of them are connected to the group. It's called "A Show of Hands". It's awesome!! There's no other instrumentation other than bass and voice/vocal. Also, no overdubs! From: mixmaster @ mistral.co.uk (Mark Hughes) Date: Fri, 8 Mar 1996 22:33:31 GMT Dearest all ! T'is Mark Hughes whom is saying HI for probably the 2nd time ! Firstly, sad to hear that Daniel J who chats to my daughter a lot thinks that the recordings of Guaranteed are not all that brilliant .. I was at the Crystal Palace Bowl concert when they performed the set and it was fantastic ! I did get really badly sunburnt on my neck and head but didn't seem to notice until AFTER the boys had finished strutting their stuff .. Hello to anyone who was actually at that concert - Squeeze were great too - agree ? I used to DJ and I have encountered Mark 'The 45' King who was an artist who released a very successful dance record called the '900 number' which was a fairly mundane song which was excellent for the dancefloor but not extremely boring to listen to .. the same as Mark '909' King ?? Oh, hang on .. Daniel - can you write to Sam re : records she has for sale ? As for the T-shirts, just let me know when and how much !! < slobbers and foams at the mouth > CD - EXTREMELY illegal !! What do people feel about bootleg CD's in the context of the guys NOT getting paid for royalties - ie the infamous 'White Funky' live bootleg ?? IF we do go ahead - FREEDOM just HAS to go on the CD, both the A&B side about a dealer copy of SITL that I came across a while back which had a 12" by 12" ACTUAL photograph of the band - Mark wearing a 'mask' style t-shirt, Mike wearing a paint-splattered t-shirt , Boon wearing a b/w striped jacket and Phil wearing a t-shirt with chinese writing on it. Inside the clear double-sleeve is notes about the dealer price of the CD <5.25 UK pounds!> .. dealer display pack mentioned too .. and notes on appearances on TV including Channel 4 programme 'Whatever you want' .. does ANYONE have any clues about this item ? Lastly - thanks to TERRY ROSS who has been mentioned before - the lifeline for info with his paper fanzine until they split up .. Regards, Mark Ps. I'll go now .. ------------------------------ Subject: Compilation and stuff From: Sean Kane Date: Fri, 8 Mar 1996 19:38:00 -0500 (EST) Hi All, I think I've got to agree the best way to go would be through official channels for the list CD. I don't really have any rarities to risk, but I've had enough other things lost or wrecked in the mail to just as soon not try it. As for tracks for the CD, I'm still so far behind on building a regular collection that I don't have too much of an opinion on what whould be best. It's all new to me (and yes, it's a great feeling to hear something new by L42!!!) It's great to hear the Crockford news too... Thanks Loz! On the poster question, I picked up a True Colors poster back in my first year of undergrad, about 6 years ago, from a traveling poster sale. It's beaten up, but still nice to have. My girlfriend actually though I went to Germany to see them. Wouldn't that have been nice? One last note... I managed to find a copy of the Prince's Trust concert CD, with just the one L42 song on it, for FREE! It's used, but plays fine. Probably wouldn't have been worth much money for a live SAY, but it's nice to have. TCOY, Sean
