Although I've been subscribed for the last few months, this is my first message to the list because I've been diagnosed as being clinicly lazy. My name is David Goodall and I've been a (devoted) Level 42 fan since my Dad used to play The Pursuit of Accidents in the car stereo, back in '82. Since then I've been hooked. I seen Level 42 play only twice, The Staring at the Sun tour (Hammersmith Odeon) and that fatefull night at the Royal Albert Hall on October 14th 1994 - yes I too saw Lenny Henry, Simon and Marcus!! For those that were there that night, I think it's a shame that: a). The sound quality wasn't that great (or was it just too loud?) b). Nobody knew the words to the 'We'll Meet Again'. But it was all worth it (of course) just to see Marks LED festooned bass sweep onto the darkened stage. Excellent. Well, thats it for the moment.... Cheers, David (Society against Societies against Mail Signatures). ps. did anybody else see Mark King on 'Pop Quiz' last year? He was the team leader - which won, by the way. Although one of his 'questions' was to identify the song 'I feel free' - hmmm... pps. Yes, the track 'Easy' by Nick Kershaw is great - especially the bass playing! -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: mmmmmmmmm From: Laurence Green Date: Sat, 17 Feb 1996 12:52:00 PST Hi All, Well aren't I lucky! I have just got hold of 1) Wings Of Love 81remix, mmmm isnt this good. 2)Barcelona and 3)the extended version of Spirit Free from the CD single...Oh yes Cinderella you shall go to the ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please dont inundate me with requests for these but if you want a copy send a tape to: LOZ Green, 110 Abbey Lane, Sheffield, S8 OBQ England. Of course if you have some rare tracks to swap that would be great, but I now have all the released mixes including Sun Goes Down and Micro Kid unreleased promo mixes. I am only looking for demos and promo mixes. Someone was asking about Mike and what He's doing. Well, he's just moved house and Crockford is expecting him to start making some demos in a month or so, which of course I will be asking Crockford for copies of!!!!!!!!!!!! Boon doesnt say what instruments he played on his album, he lists the keyboardist and a couple of others and the states the everything else was done by him! Did Boon play Sax on Instrumental Love? I heard somewhere that he didnt! Bye...................................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: A just a quickie From: Amanda K Paulette Date: Sat, 17 Feb 1996 13:17:00 -0500 (EST) Hello kids. Can't stay long (it's halftime in the UMass-Virginia Tech--go Hokies!-- game), just need to mention a few things: 1) Many kudos to Zak for his T-shirt design. Yes, I too think it's slightly busy, but if this was a first attempt is was quite good. But about getting these beauties printed up and the possible prohibitive cost: does anyone know about getting them, like, laser-printed or something to that effect? Is this a good process? Anyway, there are a bunch of companies that apparently do this and have Web pages, so that's just a suggestion. And I might give a design a whirl if I get the time (God willing; I'm trying hopelessly to design Web pages for a Shakespeare festival that was just dumped in my lap yesterday. Oooh, that could leave a mark...) 2) I got my copy of "Forever Now" a week and a half ago (who do you think you've not heard from me in that time?) Could this album be any more perfect? I am soooo loving the whole album, especially "The Sunbed Song" (altho it had to grow on me), "Love in a Peaceful World" (this song could have gone Top 10, I swear) and "Learn to Say No" (I positively cannot sit still when it comes on). In fact there is _no_ song that I dislike. I'm seriously considering buying another copy: one for home, one for work. Alright, that's it. Game back on. Both are good, but FN is so much >richer in every aspect - (melody, vocal harmony, song structure) and of >course is much more professionally produced. > >Think about this: If you were a band who came out with a pretty good first >album, then spent years and years working in studio after studio on album >after album, touring the world, improving songwriting skills, all of that >culminating in a truly magnificent album like FN, how would you feel if >people still preferred your early effort? > >In other words, what's the point of all of those years of improvement? > >Just Wondering, TT I happen to prefer the older albums, mainly because of the instrumentals which Level 42 seems to have abandoned on the later albums. That's not to say that the vocal songs are bad, they're not, but I think it is nice to here them play without hearing some of the less than good lyrics on the last album (holy grail, what does he mean?). It's interesting to see that 4 of the instrumentals are in the top twenty of the song poll, and their first album is the number one album. Another favourite band of mine, Mezzoforte, about the same age as Level 42, still plays mostly instrumental tracks, and they are good! But back to the issue, I remember reading that Mark said that nowadays he didn't just play away on the bass as when he was younger, but he usually plays more when they're playing live. Anyway, that's what I think I miss a little on the later albums, they are very polished compared to the earlier albums, but they miss that something, but when they're live, it's something else. Of course, I prefer the faster songs, so my favourites on Forever Now are All Over You and The Sunbed Song, but mainly that album has many "slow" tracks. Now I'm beginning to wonder what I really meant to write, and if it got through, anyway, I've finally ordered the Forever Now Resurgence release plus Boon's album. I must be the last on the list to do so, but better late than never. I also pestered them about a rarities album, keep their mailbox full with request and hope they dig out something really great! I was also thinking of ordering Jakko's albums that were mentioned here some issues ago, does anybody have anything to say about them? Phew, this must be the longest entry I've ever made. Regarding the t-shirts designs, I'd love to have Mark's bass strings (real ones) blended into some nice picture, a little like the end of the Guaranteed live video where they've put the camera down the neck of the bass while Mark is playing the bass solo (it's a black and white part at the end I think). PS. Does anyone have really large pictures of Level 42 that I can use on the desktop of my PC at work, something like 1024x768 or bigger. Now I'm using Zak's T-shirt design and some pictures I've snatched from Synth's L42 page, but they look a bit small on my screen. Pat, does your screen saver work with Windows NT?, and how big are the pictures? Now, I guess you're all tired of waiting for this to stop so here is the history of my life: No, just kidding.
