Zak ------------------------------ Subject: worrying development From: Nigel.Collier @ ncl.ac.uk (Nigel Collier) Date: Wed, 7 Feb 1996 13:17:27 +0000 I picked up a copy of Love Games (amongst other L42 singles) yesterday and, a couple of minutes after I got home from work, the carrier bag containing said records disappeared. I looked around everywhere for it but couldn't find it. A little later I went to the toilet and there it was - I had apparently instinctively taken the records into the bathroom with me...I'm concerned that perhaps my love for L42 is taking on a sexual dimension... The record in question is the 'Weave Your Spell' 12" EP recorded live at Beggar's Wood (I think) in 1982. Love Games follows Dune Tune on the B side and is an absolutely brilliant version (I noticed Love Games came second in the digest poll). If the voters heard this version it might just be enough to see it at number one. Mark must be close to snapping his strings he's slapping so hard and Mike has got the best afro yet on the reverse of the cover. Cost me 3 quid. I used YAHOO! and did a search under IMPORT CD's. There are several other browsers that CD Banzai recomended for further sources. This is where I found MUSIC BY E-MAIL.... Happy hunting........ From the rec.music.marketplace/collecting FAQ entry on "CD rot": The best-known problem is with a larger number of discs pressed between 1989 and 1991 by Philips Data Optical (PDO) in the UK. Due to errors in manufacturing, these discs are slowly turning a dark orange or bronze color, primarily on the label side. This discoloration gradually propagates from the outer edge of the CD towards the center, and can eventually make such discs unplayable. If you have such a disc, PDO will replace it for free. You can contact them at the following address to arrange for the replacement: Dave Wilson, Marketing Services Manager PDO Discs Ltd. (UK) Philips Road Blackburn, Lancashire BB1 5RZ United Kingdom Tel: +44 254-52448 Fax: +44 254-54729 By all reports, PDO have been very accomodating in their response to this problem. If anyone calls in a report on On The Level, please let us know what kind of response you get. Alexander Thomas writes: > So that's it; can anyone suggest, who the destination of this letter is/was?? Lots of promo records come with press releases like this one, some even with 8x10 photos and the like. The idea is to try convince radio people that your band is worth playing; the fact that you found the record with the press release intact shows that the attempt doesn't always work. :-) I'm still not clear on L42's deal with A&M -- were they just licensed for the one album or what? gfield @ esri.com (Gabe Field [ESRI-Redlands]) writes: > Years ago I bought a Pioneer player and planned to buy the L42 > collection, but it was only on video -tape- (Ye-yeuck!). If you're talking about Level Best, it came out on LD in the US at the same time the tape came out. I'm not sure why you were unable to find it; it was no harder to track down around here than any other laserdisc was at the time. Laurence Green writes: > Im sorry to say that I doubt very much that Marks album will be released > in the US. One thing that upset me was that Mark is looking for a major > label to sign his album? Why? Presumably because he wants people to be able to find the album in the shops, which is much harder to assure with a smaller label (as anyone hunting for the Forever Now reissues can attest). Fabfriday @ aol.com writes: > 1) Urban Fascination $32 > 2) Sun Goes Down $32 > 3) Remix Best $44 > > These are listed as L42 albums. I've never seen them before. Urban Fascination is the first album (Level 42) with a new name for the Japanese market. Remix Best may or may not just be The Remixes, but I've never heard of The Sun Goes Down being a full-length (or even a single) anywhere. > In the last Digest it was disappointing to hear that Mark's new album most > likely won't be released here. I still take it somewhat personaly (not the > only one I bet) that Level 42/Mark King/Mike Lindup/Boon just gave up on the > US fans. Oh, come on -- the band didn't have anything to do with RCA giving up on marketing L42 in the US. Those decisions are made by the label, not by the band. RCA chose not to issue Forever Now here because they didn't believe it was possible to make enough money here, and Mark and the rest of the band had nothing to do with that -- I'm curious to know what you think L42 could have done differently as a band to change the situation. Laurence Green writes: > Actually maybe Im being harsh and maybe we're all going on about this a > little, but ONCE WAS enough, we even told her after the first time to stop. "Telling her to stop" won't do any good as the people who are behind this magazine-subscription spam aren't on the mailing list, and aren't even accessable via any of the (forged) email addresses in the message's headers. They will probably keep sending the message to the list every couple of weeks -- they've been doing it to all of mine since last September. (They don't get through on mine, though, because the software used to run my lists doesn't let nonsubscribed people post.) I live in Hagerstown, Maryland, which is a fairly central location in the eastern US. Children would be no problem; it seems that they LOVE L42, based on my own experience with my daughter. ------------------------------ Subject: Urban Fascination From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Wed, 7 Feb 1996 17:00:49 -0800 I'll probably be the fifth person who answers this, but Urban Fascination is a different title for an existing Level 42 CD (I think it's Pursuit of Accidents). I may be wrong on what it is the same as, but I'm definitely right that it is a retread. If you already own everything and you aren't a completist, don't buy it. Standing in the Light...... Can someone PLEASE get this CD for me? Obviously I'll pay all costs. I don't feel like ordering it from CD NOW and paying $30 for it, and some of you said you can get it from record stores where you live. Anyone who can, please send me an e-mail. If I own the Japanese version of Forever Now, and am not a fanatical collector (I own all albums either on cassette or CD, but not many B-sides, remixes, etc.), should I really bother to get the new Forever Now? I paid $40 for the Jap version, so I'm a little hesitant about getting another one. I love the boys and all, but I have to be a little economical. If y'all say it's worth it for someone like me, I will get it, but please give me an honest answer. Lolita
