From: Jason Bell Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 14:34:45 -0800 I think it's fair to say that Digest #366 didn't contain the 30% of Level 42 info that Joe had informed us about. What it did have was an 80% battering about Joe. And who said that Digests+Email never made a difference. Digest #366 was big, so big that Netscape Mail read it then lost it. Cheers ! Right 1996 is nearly over, a big thanks to all who have supported this Digest and what input I have put into it. The Web page is nearly done, just a few final touches. Happy New Year (including Joe P.) Jason Bell (and Bass Corner, Will where are you ?) (xdr44 @ dial.pipex.com) ------------------------------ Subject: What's that all about? From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 06:35:47 -0800 I'm sure I'm just reiterating what a lot of folks said yesterday, but I was a bit taken aback by Mr. Parrington's message. As a number of people have pointed out, I don't recall seeing his name at the top of more than one or two messages, and I've been on the digest a little short of two years. I suppose that I count as one of the 'dozen or so' people who post regularly, but that doesn't make me any more or less of a digester. That is the point. So what if people lurk? You lurked! Which goes along with my next point. You chastise Loz for teasing people and bragging about being in contact with Crockford, and say that you are also. Well, as Elson said, where is _your_ info? Unless you are giving up the goods, I suggest you leave him alone. Throughout the course of his tenure on the Digest, he has annoyed a number of people at one time or another, but it has all been resolved and we realize how much he has contributed to our knowledge of what is currently going on with the band. Many people contribute in a lot of ways to this digest, and not just by posting. Quite a few people coordinated to put together the CD (I helped write the liner notes), Zak made shirts, there have been countless Levelfests, and many other activities have originated from here. People have been turned on to other bands, many tapes have been made, and many friendships have been forged (Winston and I met here, and I count him as a good friend now). If there are tangential discussions that bother or offend you, SKIP THEM OR UNSUBSCRIBE! In your day to day living, at a cocktail party for example, have you ever been held hostage talking to someone who offends or bores you? What do you do? You either tune them out, alter the conversation or walk away. Same goes here. We have had threads about favorite keyboardists, bassists, other bands, etc. and the reason they occur is because someone is interested in them, and nine times out of ten it is more than one person. I agree that sometimes it goes too far, but the thread usually dies out by itself. I personally am not into Thomas Dolby, but I skip those messages, which solves the problem. To be honest, I think that if every single message was _solely_ about Level 42, it would get boring. I love the band as much as anybody, but it is refreshing to read about other things every once in a while. It is akin to eating only salty food all the time; sometimes having sweets makes you appreciate the salty stuff more. One other thing: yes, it is annoying to read five responses to the same question, but you know what? There is no such thing as a dumb question, because if one person is asking it, there are probably ten other people who would like the answer as well. Just like your teacher used to say in grade school. I would agree that people should check the FAQ first, but if the answer isn't there, I don't begrudge them asking. Lighten up! Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Live at Wembley (CD vs Video) From: The Bassman Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 15:26:43 +0000 (GMT) Greetings folks. Amanda - you wanted to know whether it is worthwhile buying the "Live at wembley" CD since you have the video. I would say a definite YES. OK, I admit I'm a L42 fanatic so will buy anything with their name on it. The CD and the video are two entirely different events. The video is from the running in the family era, whereas the CD is a different show from the 'Staring at the sun' tour. If you like their live stuff, I would call it a must. However, several people have commented (myself included) that the mix is a bit dodgy (cymbals too high in particular). What I would like to see is a video of the "Staring ..." tour. OK, it was the first live show I saw them in - but the music and lighting rig were fantastic. I have yet to see a lighting rig as effective as theirs on that tour!!! TCOY, Mark. Wow! That was one helluva digest we all received yesterday. I bet worldmachine.com wants to take a holiday after sending that digest to 457 recipiants!! (51Kb each). I guess I might be called one of the (slight) lurkers as I don't often post to the digest (although I read most of what is sent). I am quite happy with the content of what I have been receiving thanks Joe. Sure, some things interest me more than others. I'll start to read it - if it's not up my street I'll skip onto the next article. Mind you, that doesn't happen too often. As for just a few hardcore contributors - that's fine by me. There are people out there who know more on the subject than I, hence they will be able to contribute more. I'll just chirp in when I've got something to say. ** Thought for the day ** If all the subscribers posted on a regular basis (assuming we all had something to share in the field) this digest would collapse under the volume of postings. I would have problems keeping up with HUGE digests as they would take too long to read. Also, if each is 50Kbytes long, I would have to be very careful about exceeding my mail storage quota. Ten of these beauties and I start to enter sinking sand!! (Yup - I only have 500K of space!!) Well folks - A happy new year to y'all. TCOY, Mark. I contribute every once in a while, and I don't ever remember seeing you make any kind of contribution to the digest + it's what you/we make it. I'd like to thank Loz for all his information and hard work. Keep it up. Signal to Noise ratio: I don't mind if people contribute information Not pertaining to L42, in fact I welcome it. (Unless we start solely discussing sub-orbital thermodynamics and it's effects on electromagnetic propulsion systems; something I don't know much about). I borrowed the Jaco Pastorius 'Birthday' CD from a friend. Man, he certainly could play the bass! Just wondering-it would have been an interesting band if Jaco, Jakko Jakszyk, and Michael 'Jacko' Jackson got together... I just bought 'Level42, The Remix Collection' (Conniseur Collection). Not sure if I like it yet. Tower o' Power - I borrowed their new 'Souled Out' CD. Didn't like it as much as their T.O.P. CD. (Everyone should own T.O.P.) Tony B - nice Christmas tree! I miss Tucker. He had some funny quotes. I have some to contribute, but they're on my work PC, + my work PC really did croak and hasn't been fixed yet. All the reply posts have said it pretty well, so I'll just say this. Don't go away mad, Joe, - just go away. ------------------------------ Subject: Parrington's Reply From: pattonse @ plu.edu Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 13:30:28 -0800 (PST) Okay folks, the moment you've all been salivating for. Assuming Eric Hansen has some scrap of conviction and responsibilty to post this, you will read the following comments that I have addressed special to each of you that replied, or should I say attacked, my post. In the end, all I can say is there is about 9 of you that need to get some sort of life. You were all too ignorant it seems to grasp what I was saying. Did you think I was just going to sit back and listen to all this bull this morning and NOT reply? It appears that this is in fact not a Level 42 Digest, but rather a nesting place for insecure unintelligent people (those of you who don't apply, excuse me) to feel some sort of pseudo family atmosphere that obviously they are not getting in *real* life. No wonder the Digest sucks. Just look at the quality of folks that post on it: __________ ELSON: A good sign that I will have to move my IQ down a few notches to communicate with someone is when they use words like "Homeboy," "Dude Chill," and "G." Read my post again and show me where I said we should talk about, or I talk about Level 42 ALL DAY. Then, once you've found where I said it, please post it for me, so I can see your dillusion myself. From all the Digests you get, it appears the explanation for your lack of facts lies in the fact you spend *way* too much time on the net. Or as you would say "surfing the web dude!" Like awesome. Cowabunga! ____________ JASON: If you think I need to put up posts in order for my complaint to be valid, then you must be a subscriber to the MTV Choose or Loose bull too. Your hostility, a long with the others that responded venomously, help prove my point that in some parts of this country, groups of select students were deprived of being taught reading skills. Probably a goverment cover up. I have founf (typo - found rather) that when someone can't deal with another person's opinion they have to attack the person and his or her viewpoint, rather than state their own. Much like the Darwin nuts that feel the need to make fun of the Jesus fish. It is sick and venomous, and shows an empty person. Yes, all that from a bumper sticker? You bet your ass! ___________ NIGEL: Loz publicly displays his dirty laundry, so I therefore have the righ to say it smells. Second, you want gossip, buy an Enquirer. But I, like you, am seeking that happy medium on the Digest. So stop swinging the pendulum of what I am saying. Read it again and stop putting words in my mouth. ______________ DIRKIES: Please don't cry censorship. I don't believe in it under any circumstance. That is not what I was writing. Read it again. I'm talking about common sense and consideration. _______ LOZ: Suffice to say it appears I kicked you hard in the mental nuts. Your sarcasim shows your maturity level and your grasp for dealing with the facts laid before you, as opposed to personal attacks and assaults as a response to facts you can't defend. I NEVER insulted you. Go back and read it again. I said I was tired of you teasing (you figure it out) with info and hearing your persoanl gripes. I read your posts because you have GREAT info, but to hear the endless pity parties for your relationship situations get redundant and annoying. Just because I am not the Planter's Part Mix like you (NOW i'm insulting you), doesn't mean I love Level 42 any less. I guess I just have a life and a woman to go with it. If you spent less time with Crock and complaining and teasing and rambling, and more time with your relationship, you might actually have a wedding to make boring. How is that for a poor sense of humor? Also, I said that my communication with Crockford dates back to 1991. It doesn't mean I have a hotline with him now. I stated, if you could read, that I can call him up too. I bet you drive him nuts. One call or fax, and I could find that out quick. As far as what good things you do post, I try not to pick corn out of terds. My suggestion is to find an adult and have them read you my post again. __________ SEAN: Everyone should take notes from you on how to write a disagreeing, but respectful and well thought out reply. And again, I didn't write you folks for a reply, rather for you guys to have something to think about, agree or disagree as you may. _________________________ CHRIS: The Digest becomes diluted and unfocused when the majority of it's content is not about, in some way, Level 42. _________________________ JAY: Once again I shall say LEARN TO READ. I never hinted at this being a contest between Loz and me for info. I merely stated that if he wants to give info, give it, don't taunt. And also that I can get info from Crockford too. I did not say that as Na ne na ne boo boo. Only a baby would it infer it as such. Rather, I was telling LOZ that when he is not at liberty to say something (that he knows), then don't tell us. It's like some kind of power game. I like Wang Chung and Simply Red too. That's why I go to their posts on the web. ______________ JOE: Sad to think we share the same name. As I have told nearly everyone before, READ what I posted, not what YOU think I posted. And for the 42nd time: whether I post or not does not make my point less valid or woth thinking about. Once again, here is someone that defends Loz, because he gives good info. What if he didn't? What his tangents be less justified? Also, I never said ONLY Level 42. Go back to grade school and learn to about reading comprension. Finally, funny how you deem it so important to check back at when I have posted before. Get a life! Geez. And I was more than justified to complain about endless ramblings of people that were in a furor over what would be on the next disc. I simply said that everyone should calm the hell down and relax, since EVERYTHING will eventually be bootlegged onto a disc. But hearing everyone go back and forth for *so* long was so annoying. So pleaseq, don't bean idiot and generalize past, present, or future postings of mine. Learn to read. Therein the answer lies. ______ ERIC HANSON: What the hell is your problem? You are the administrator here. Try showing it by being objective, impartial to what someone might post, and DO NOT insult me by calling my post "a brewing masterpiece." That was out of line and shows me you have alot to learn about the tact and responsibilty your job entails. Your sarcasim reflects badly on the Digest and your abilites to be mature. You have indeed shown your True Colours. Funny, once again, how you justify Loz because he has provided info that is worthwhile. How fickle. Finally, I have over 300 cds in my collection. And dig this, not all are Level 42. But this Digest is called the Level 42 Digest. But instead it is a blurry remnant of what was something worth it's weight. Thanks to your expertise and choices, it's all but in the sewer. _____________________________________ EVERYONE: It leaves me in awe to discover that those of you that responded spent less time listening to what was said, and then decide to accept it or not, and spent more time verbally assaulting me. Those of you that did should "look into the mirror again." READ THE POST AGAIN. I called no names to specific people. In the case of Loz, I merely stated that he should stop the teasing and relax on the personal side. But little did I know that in fact there are people on this Digest that pop in for gossip, unrelated matters, personal relationship updates and verbal assaults. There are those of you that were looking *so* forward to my reply. Sick. And a sad reflection but a great explanation for why you love this Digest so much. Meanwhile, my goal was to help point out some things, take them or leave them, and to help make the Digest more Level42ish, rather than Level42youish or me-ish. I guess for me to relate to some of you, I would have to have the "laptop" mentality where I have very little of a real life, and find friends and comfort through a bunch of information highway strangers that I will never meet. Once again, my theory that the majority is ALWAYS wrong shines brightly. don't shadow the genius, standing in the light I'll make you understand and there's no need to be defensive, when there's nothing to defend Joe ------------------------------ Subject: CD Banzai info, uses for SAY video From: Katie Livingston Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 15:48:52 EST Happy New Year, one and all! Someone asked whether CD Banzai is reputable...I ordered two items from them a while back, and got one of them immediately. The other is out of stock and hard to find. They (actually, it seems to be a "he", a guy named Rene' who runs the outfit) didn't charge my credit card til after the first item shipped, and only charged me for the one item that arrived. My sole complaint is that it can be a bit frustrating to find out the status of your order. Rene' isn't the quickest at answering e-mail, so it's better to phone. CD Banzai doesn't have all the items in stock that are listed on the web page; when you place an order, Rene tries to get it from the publisher. Don't be fooled that the long out-of-print 12" by Some Famous Musician will soon be yours just cuz you see it listed on CD Banzai's web site. It appears that if Rene' can't find what you ordered in 6-8 weeks, you won't get it, nor will you get e-mail telling you that you won't get it. Your mileage may vary. ObLevel42Content: I was looking at video projectors last week, and needed to "stress test" them to see how they handled sudden shifts in color. I hit upon the the perfect clip -- the Something About You video! It changes from near black and white (train scenes) to vivid color (the tartan suit, the MG, Cherie's pink and purple clothing), and has some funky chromatic shifts (the train station at the end). It was fun watching the salesman try to calibrate the projector ("no, Mike's turtleneck should be more of a goldenrod color...") while listening to the song. Best of all, the salesman was unfamiliar with the band, so we ended up watching most of Level Best there in the showroom. I think I made a convert! Now, if only he'll knock the projector price down a little... Cheers, Katie ------------------------------ Subject: Switching lead singers From: HighwayHamster @ webtv.net (Glen Hambly) Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 17:22:30 -0600 I'm sorry, I don't remember to whom this response is directed as I discarded the digest before I decided to respond, but who says a band can't switch lead singers? I can think of several successful bands who have had no problem in showcasing the vocal talents of more than one singer: Queen, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Toto, the Doobie Brothers, Kiss, and, of course, The Beatles. I'm sure there are dozens of others. The notion that the songs Mike sings are anything less than legitimate is unacceptable. My 42 cents worth. Happy New Year, Levelheads!!!! Yeah, 12 string basses are impossible from a technique standpoint (I don't think we'd ever find Mark with one), but in some cases THE SOUND... If you haven't seen King's X live you really are missing something. Doug's 12 string creates an enormous foundation. These dudes are amazing - beautiful harmonies, great sound from only 3 guys, absolutely NO sequencing for you purists! I really like that album (just titled "King's X) with "Germany" - what a stomper that tune is. Gotta see 'em in a good room tho - a couple of times I saw them in less than ideal acoustic settings and it took something away from them. They were brilliant at The Sting in New Britain Connecticut, but kind of muddled at The Strand in Providence. -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: its LOZ From: Laurence Green <106265.1665 @ compuserve.com> Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 15:02:13 -0500 Hello everyone, So, a new year I wonder what it has in store for level 42. well firstly thanks for all the messages of support regarding Joe's somewhat unexpected posting, it was certainly a shame and left the year on a very sour note needlessly. However, not trying so be cheeky or clever I think that being as Joe has contacts in the press and speaks with Paul we should at least expect some relevant input from him regarding the group from now on. and I for one will certainly welcome any fresh sources of input regarding the band'. Some people asked why I couldn't just ignore Joe, the answer is that I have spent a great deal of my time writing letters to the digest and I do get upset when some people, far from appreciating me seem to think that my input is negligible. I certainly don't write to the digest to further my ego that would be pointless, in this environment I am just a collection of one's and zero's and whether I am a popular binary number of a loathed binary number isn't really important, furthering interest and knowledge in level 42 is important well to me anyway. Joes letter was certainly bitter and unwelcome but let's put animosity behind us and start the new year with a smile, I for one certainly won't stop finding out new information and won't be changing my style, although you may notice a change because I now dictate my digest. I certainly won't be telling people how they should write their digest although I seem to remember when I was a new member I asked for more level 42 based postings, realistically most letters are about level 42 and its fun to talk about other things and set up a real community because let's be honest if we can't share problems and become friends then the digest might as well just be six or seven of the most prolific writers compiling a weekly magazine of information and sending it out which seems to be what Joe wants, but it's not what I want, nor most members from what I read. Having said all that it is a good job really that all 460 members don't write every day otherwise reading the digest would take an age. Right, on to level 42. I have a copy of the original artwork for running in the family (it's a photo copy of course) it includes the cardboard cutouts of the group seen in the running in the family video, I wonder if anyone else knows about anyway original artwork. I am aware that for staring at the San there was a generic sun type symbol that appeared on both promo CD's and the promo LP and some other promo stuff I have from that Album. but this was dropped shortly before released, any help would be great. From: "Anthony Burns" Date: Wed, 1 Jan 97 06:44:44 UT Think that 1997 will be no better than just a slightly improved rehash of 1996? Well, attitude means the difference so many times in so many ways, here's an example of how things will get better in 1997. First, some simple background. I live in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, where over 2 million people live in quiet desperation for a guilty verdict!!! (just kidding). For years I've been scouring the racks at Tower and other stores for any clue of hard to find Level 42 CDs. There's always a copy of Running In the Family, Level Best, or World Machine but I have never seen a hint of Forever Now anywhere and Staring At The Sun is considered a bonus find. Well, I happened to be walking along Westwood Boulevard in West Los Angeles today and stopped into Wherehouse to check out their used CD rack in a feeble attempt at succor... Well, there was a copy of Forever Now on resurgence sitting there waiting for me to grab it. I did and couldn't believe my good fortune in finding it. Hah! That was only the beginning. A few blocks up the street there is a used record shop called Rhino Records. In the used CD racks they had a copy of both Standing In The Light and Staring At The Sun in very good condition (both boos and cheers to whomever let those little gems go!). I'm thinking this is weird! How could it get any better? It did in spades. A few blocks further north, there is a massive book/record store called Borders. After perusing the shelves for the printed material I was looking for, I meandered upstairs to check out their CDs. I'd never been up there and was pleasantly surprised at how many CDs they actually had. Around and around I went until I stumbled into the rock section. Might there be any Level 42 here? I found the label and saw there were about 8~9 CDs there. What did they have? Well, to my immense shock, there were 4 more copies of Forever Now just sitting there waiting for some deprived soul to buy them and take them home to a loving CD player. 4! There isn't 1 copy within 20 miles of my home and I run into five at two different stores in less than 2 hours. Not to mention there was also a special remix collection that looks like it might be a major find. Attitude is everything. If we keep our heads up and make the effort to the word out, there is little doubt we can do something about the veil of secrecy that seems to hang over L42. Make a tape and turn on a friend. All it takes is a TDK tape and some good salesmanship!!!! For people who know Los Angeles, borders is between Santa Monica and Wilshire Boulevards on the east side of Westwood, just north of a 7-11. Questions: Where is Gary Husband from? Where is Phil staying now? France? A CD is "supposed" to hold 660 megs or 76 minutes of music, but Forever Now is 78:01..... any explanations on that? Does Phil Gould have dual citizenship? Where is Boon's Home Page? Any updates on the Mark, Boon, Wally collaboration effort? Sincerely, Anthony ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #366 From: Norm Kuk Date: Wed, 01 Jan 1997 01:11:37 -0800 ELSON: GOOD SHOW!! ------------------------------ Subject: Not just Level 42 stuff.. From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Wed, 1 Jan 1997 01:16:09 -0800 Happy New Year! OK, my wife and I took a much needed weekend in Kansas City on the 27 of Decemeber and on one of our walks through the Plaza, I stopped in a record store and gravitated to the 'L' section. Lemonheads...Levellers...ah, Level 42. Hey! Here's the 'Live at Wimbeley' CD that everyone's talking about! Plopped my sixteen bucks down and listened to it on the drive back to Omaha.... Hmmm.. not bad.. I think I like the 'Live at Wimbeley 87' disc better. I should probably say that there is no CD of this, of course, but I dubbed the hi-fi audio tracks of it onto my minidisc player so that's what I mean by 'disc'. The "89" version lacks drive and balance. I think it's due to the recording of it. It's very difficult recording live because of mike placement, reverberation, audience, and other acoustic headaches. Want to know what I think of the Digest since a certain 'digester' feels this computer rag gets away from the subject near and dear to most of us? 1. It's fine. Perhaps from time to time, non L42 subjects brought forth here tend to consume large portions of bytes, but music is music. The L42 sound is as unique as any other kind of music and it's nice to know that we also enjoy a large variety of sounds. If I want to talk about what Mozart thought of Beethoven when he first played for him in 1787, I should be able to do so. Sure, it has nothing to do with the L-band but maybe it DOES! 2. Even though this e-newsletter is dedicated to our non-Liverpool quartet, there's only so much you can say and sometimes bringing up other "related" topics can raise new insight and awareness of the band and maybe even in YOU! 3. This 'Digital Daily' contains info that anyone can utilize to his or her own benefit. I've come to learn about all kind of information about all kinds of information.
