My understanding about Netscape is that it will format messages with a wrap at column 72, and this is a fixed position. They say that a future version will allow you to override this, probably by a setting in the win.ini for you win folks, or in my case, in the X*Resources for the Unix version. > With so many musicians on this list, wouldn't it be cool to create a > cassette collection of some of our best 'original' songs? Now there's a band that should have gone Mega-thingy. I > picked up a promo-only (vinyl) album when they called themselves > Huang-Chung and was fortunate enough to see them live... You know, Points On The Curve _was_ available on CD (I have a copy). It's long gone now, of course. I never got to see them live, but they were a fun band. I remember "Wait" as being one of my favorites. Eric Writes: > I also favor The Golden Age of Wireless! It reminds me of some of the > nostalgic "futuristic" stuff at Disney World! Geez, Zak... should I > casually "mention" again how my copies of Dolby's CDs are _different_ > than most others?!?!> Well, there were so many different versions of the records, it's hard to keep track. My favorite is also The Golden Age Of Wireless, and there's _many_ versions of that. There was the original EMI/Harvest vinyl version. (Both initial UK and Amercian releases were the same, I think.) My memory is cloudy on this now, but I recall the record being re-issued in the US at least two times, both with the GAOW "magazine" cover on the front and revised tracking, with the "final" reissue having "She Blinded Me With Science" and "One Of Our Submarines" (both songs came WAY after the album was recorded) included. I own the original EMI/Harvest vinyl release, which on the cover has him standing in a room wearing a suit, and features "Leipzig" and "Urges," two tracks that were later (unfortunately) deleted. I also own two CD versions, one Capitol (US) and one EMI (UK), and not only are they different from the original vinyl, they are different from each other. They look exactly the same, have the same track order as each other, (not the same as the vinyl) and have very similar play times, but they're not the same. The EMI CD has a shortened "Blinded By Science" on it, but has longer versions of "Airwaves," and "Windpower. The EMI CD most closely matches the vinyl in terms of which versions of which tracks are on it, with the one exception that the vinyl has the shorter version of "Airwaves." The original vinyl, by the way, has a COMPLETELY different version of "Radio Silence" on it. Are your versions further different from these, Eric? I'd be interested. ..."I read the papers... every word..." -Jeff [Mine are the standard US version, but they're signed by the man himself... I got to interview him for about an hour in 1989 when he gave a lecture at the univeristy I attended. I also have the cool 12" vinyl single of Dolby's Cube/Googooplexus:Cube Create Caviar, but unfortunately I didn't have it with me for him to sign. I also have a recording of our interview which I ought to dig up. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Dirkies From: Jeff Grous Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 11:02:02 -0800 HAS ANYONE HEARD FROM DIRKIES LATELY? WHAT?? Brmfon Domme. WHAT?? From: John Venzon Date: Fri, 13 Dec 96 10:04:58 -0000 Brighton Dome! Can't you understand what I'm saying? No, the recording is so bad... The Mighty Maomoondog I thought Crockford said we couldn't get into trouble making cd's like > this if we only used stuff that has been released or aired on a tv or > radio show. I really don't think that any radio station would ever > broadcast the Brighton Dome show, because of its poor sound quality. > So, why use it? This is a very good question. My feeling is not to use it, but I didn't know if there were those out there who felt the 'historical' value outweighed the inability of understanding anything they were singing. Heck, I NEVER got to see the boys live, let alone the next to the last show! So I say toss it, but what do the rest say? John V PS There may be a chance we'll use an unreleased live track, but the majority is of stuff that was on the radio (live broadcast) or previously released. Caution to the wind? ------------------------------ Subject: Crockford and Etc. From: Mikey42 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 13:05:13 -0500 Hey Guys, Don't worry about material on these CD projects, like I said before, if you have a copy of something, whatever it is, it is 99.9% probablity that it is second hand and has been released in some form properly. Crockford is more interested in what Polydor/RCA is releasing than the fans, as he knows that we treat the material with respect and do not plan to make money of our favourite band! I think he will be mad if we don't send him one though, cause he really enjoyed the first disc AYGB! John V: Do I need to send you remixes that I have for the remix disc, or would you rather wait until the LIVE disc is complete? Hey, I understand about the Brighton Dome gig, I just thought that some people would like to hear it, but for a CD project, I would agree with you! My singing wasn't that bad was it, John? OK, OK, so One in a Million is out of my range! Loads of LEVELFEST info will appear next week, so keep a close watch....a few surprises will be revealed next week!!! All the very level best for the holidays! Mikey42 "On the first day of Christmas......!" [Even though Crockford seems to condone our CD projects, I still don't think we should flaunt our plans (both past and present). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Crockford owns any rights to the music, so what he says doesn't really have any bearing on whether or not Polydor (or the boys, for that matter) would allow it. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Cover 42 and Bruce's Suggestion From: Bill Wilson Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 11:06:52 -0800 Hello! Bruce has a good suggestion, and I would be willing to do it, but I have a question for y'all... It took me a long time (like 3-4 months) to get the last one all shipped out. It was because I could not afford to buy all the tapes at once... so here is my question, would you be willing to send me $1 for the tape? As for Bruce's suggestion, I am including an original song from Mike Payne on the next Cover 42 tape, so we may already on our way... anyone interested in a tape of original music? lmk, tcoy Bill ------------------------------ Subject: Cover 42: Level With Me From: Bill Wilson Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 11:09:45 -0800 Well, we are getting close to the next tape and i decide to make my labels early this time, but found out that i am stupid. I deleted all the names for the last tape, so i need to build another list... so here is the announcement: Everyone and Anyone who is interested in getting a copy of the forthcoming Cover 42 tape, please send me some mail with your address. when you do reply, please mention whether you would be willing to pay $1 for it or not... thanks and tcoy! bill Bill Wilson billw @ xpense.com ------------------------------ Subject: Bits From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 11:48:17 -0800 To Jason: You're welcome.. ----------- I was listening to "Hamburger Train" off of Primus' 'Pork Soda' CD the other day and I though to myself that this track could be fabricated into a long lost early piece by Mark King. I could even envision a young MK thumping away at this than Les Claypool. For those who have this particular CD, tell me what you think... (My name is Mud..) ----------- I have to correct something I believed I said awhile back. When I lived in England several years ago, I think I said that I saw L42's Live at Wimbley on BBC 1 (or BBC 2) TV with a simulcast on BBC 1 (or BBC 2) radio. For some reason, I was under the impression that this was actually live. Well, a couple of weeks ago, I ordered the L.A.W. 87 video and finally got around to watching it this morning. I saw stuff in there that I didn't see on the tele in England. I was just blown away by MK's (too brief) bass solo! They also played 'Livin' it Up' too which was not broadcasted. Obviously, what I saw in the UK was edited. What a wonderful discovery! ------------ I'm still waiting for Beavis and Butthead to 'review' the video 'Something About You'. When they do, I'll have the scoop. ------------ Monday, December 16th, is the birthday of Ludwig Van Beethoven. I celebrate this day every year by playing some of his music on my stereo or by playing some of his piano works on my piano. Can someone clear this up? Lolita, it's true. I used to have that performance on video tape. I still may have it actually. It will certainly take me a long time to try to find it. The thing that I remember the most was that Phil's hair was a little long on top and it looked like he just woke up from a deep sleep in the tour bus before hopping up on stage. They sang Something About You. As I remember, the appearance was early '86. I think Marilyn McCoo was the host at that time. It could have been Dionne Warwick and then again, it could have been the incomparable Rex Smith and his red leather iron on pants. It's OK, but not anything like the Live at Wembley video. Besides the fact that Staring at the Sun wasn't my favorite album (and there are several tracks on LAW), all I can hear on some of the tracks are Gary Husband's gosh darn cymbals!!!!!! So distracting. I always wanted to hear To Be With You Again live, but it's just not as emotionally charged as I hoped it to be. As always, anything done by Level 42 is good, but this doesn't reach any higher. Plus, we don't need another version of The Chinese Way! Hope I'm not complaining too loud. The Guaranteed live video disc is great, so I know there's still good stuff out there.
