Top five records: 1. True Colours 2. Early Tapes 3. A Physical Presence 4. Staring at the Sun 5. Standing in a Light Top ten songs is more difficult but: 1. Man (live), but regular version is great also. 2. Floating Life 3. Hours by the Window 4. Seven Days 5. It's Over 6. Over There 7. Sandstorm 8. Almost There 9. Love Games 10. Gresham Blues There are so many songs that are great especially if you listen to them in the context of their album. People may not be able to respond because its such a hard choice to make and depends on what they feel like at the time of responding. ------------------------------ Subject: LOZ From: Laurence Green Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 13:35:42 PST Hi Everyone, I phoned Crockford yesterday and we talked for a little while. It seems that things have been progressing slowly with the band. Mark has now finished his album and he is hoping to have signed up to a major label in the next 2 weeks. Obviously I will keep you informed. Mike is about to move house so he isnt recording at the moment. Paul expects Mike to start recording some demos as soon as he settles in his new home. The new RCA album 'Forever Now' is progressing extremely badly. There are now further complications with the tapes and Mark has not yet finished the bass lines for all the songs because 1)he is not contractually obliged to any more for RCA and 2)why should he after the ay they treated the band and 3)he hasnt had time in between recording tracks for his solo album. Paul says it may be over a year before this album is complete. That was about all I found out so if Mark is succesful his album may be out in the not too distant future. See you soon..........................................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: rarities From: Laurence Green Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 15:44:04 PST Hi All, I thought Id drop a line with my reccomendations for any possible rarities album: (12 tracks) 1)The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up) (promo remix) found on 12" 1 sided white label promo only. 2)Micro Kid(promo mix) found on UK and US promo white labels 3)Overtime(Ed-lorimer mix) from Royal 2 promo 7" 4)Running In The Family(version with different lyrics) unknown if studio recording exists 5)Mourning(suspected unused track from Elite sessions) 6)The Happening(suspected unused track from Elite sessions) 7)Night Train(song Andy Sojka had on dictaphone, may have been destroyed) 8)Instrumental love(B-side of Elite dazz 5 and poldor version) 9)Foundation and Empire parts 1&2(from B-side Starchild) 10)Heaven In My Hands(promo mix) found on various 'Staring At The Sun promos 11)Wings Of Love('81 remix) found on 2nd Wings Of Love 12" 12)Freedom Of course unreleased songs would be preferable to the ones I have listed, as you can get hold of these tracks above (except from three of them, but I know someone who has heard the song 'Night Train') Bye.....................................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Zak's t-shirt design From: Vince Mora Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 16:56:46 -0700 (MST) Colin Campbell writes: > What Level 42 rarity would you love to see on CD? Definitely through a Web page of some kind. I think Eric's hangout is better suited, but if he would rather not, I'll put it up on the L42 Homepage. What say you, Eric? So after looking for a while I gave up and collected movies. Can I assume that the collection is finally on laser disc? I bought the Arcadia, Kajagoogoo, and Missing Person's discs but then I got out of it. Do we have a list of the available disc's? I'll lay out a leader here and say that I might be persuaded to makes tapes for the more helpful subscribers *wink* and I have the good equipment too! Regarding favorite L42 songs, well, it's hard because there are so many and 90%+ are smashingly good. Off-hand I'd say Kansas City Milkman is one of my fav's. Lying Still, Leaving Me Now, Something About You, Lesson's in Love, are fav's also. Oops! See, the list grows! I'd better stop now.... Gabe ------------------------------ Subject: brit funk compil. From: perenoel @ altern.com (perenoel) Date: Fri, 2 Feb 96 02:14 GMT hi to everybody, G yesterday i bought a CD named brit-funk compilation "keep movin' on". you can find the level42 wings of love uk dance floor mix and many other bands like: light of the world with the hit "swingin'", beggar and co "help me e out", incognito "north london boy", linx "you're lying", central line "walking into sunshine", freeez "southern freeez", junior "mama used to say", shakatak "easier said than done", atmosfear "dancing in outerspace", direct drive "time machine" and i-level with "give me". all these titles are really funky and i just wanted to know a few things about some of the featured bands. i like incognito, i have the "tribes vibes scribe" and "inside life" but these albums are from the 90's and the excellent song on this compil. was made in 81 so if somebody could give me a quick discography i'd enjoy it very much, i'm talki talking of the 80's discography of course. all the tracks on this compil were made in 80, 81, or 82 !!! bluey played also in freeez and light of the world for instance(this was ment mentionned in the booklet) another band i like and i discovered from this compil. is "shakatak" i don't really know this band but i liked this first song which looks like jazz funk, mezzoforte for instance, can somebody give me more details ?? and to end ths, i just wanted to say that there's another volume with another level42 track on it, the "love meeting love" track (i don't remember if it's a remix ve remix version or not, 'cause i haven't bought it yet :) but i think it won't last long till i 'll do it :) bye bye levelhead fans . perenoel jack. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: FIRST Time From: Smashie Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 00:14:21 -0800 ANDY42 @ aol.com writes: >I was wondering if I was the only person here who has experienced an >almost euphoric rush when I heard some of Level 42's songs for the first >time. It's like I knew I had hit something good. I rarely have that >sort of rush with other bands. Yeh! And the strange thing is you just desperately want to share that rush with somebody and they always end up saying "it's ok. Nice tune" or something and you're like "nooooooo... that's not the idea!". For some reason, I never got that initial rush from Guaranteed or Changes. Love them now - but for some reason they needed a couple of plays first. I guess it was the development Mike and Mark made after Staring At The Sun. Just a thought. See y'all. ------------------------------ Subject: Poll Stuff From: ncc1701d @ iaccess.com.au (Cliff Gorian) Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 19:31:03 +1100 Hello all, Thanks to everyone who's mailed me so far - the response has really picked up. However, a few issues have been arisen. (1) Submissions from friends, family, pets, extraterrestials.,,,, Personally, I don't have a problem with people submitting entries on behalf of other people. All L42 devotees welcome ! All I ask is that each submission have an a name (any name) to help me manage the entries. I'm sure L42 fans are beyond falisfying entries - bribery is a much more efficient technique ;-) All offers welcome ! (2) Format of submissions. A whole variety of entries have been submitted, which I'll try to cater for, but I thought I'd better re-iterate what I was originally intending. Ideally, a submission should include your top 10 songs (ranked from 1 to 10) and your top 5 albums (ranked from 1 to 5). The ranking enables each song/album to weighted so that your first preference is given more merit than your last preference. For example, the song you rated #1 scores 10 points, #2 scores 9 points,...,#10 scores 1 point. Other variations have been submitted, and this is how they will work: i) a single favourite song/album nominated Equivalent to your #1 ranked song/album, so scores 10/5 points ii) less than 10/5 songs/albums nominated Assigned points as per a full top 10, with #1 ranked song/album scoring 10/5 points iii) songs/albums nominated but not ranked. Some people have found the ranking bit really tortureous, so if you don't want to rank them then don't. A standard submission of 10 songs involves the awarding of 55 points in total. If you don't want to rank them, then the points will be shared equally for each song (i.e. 5.5 point per song). Same deal for albums (3 points per album) (3) The value of the poll ? Primarily it's for a bit of fun and debate. Yes, favourites/preferences change with time, even moment by moment. The poll is not a matter of life and death - you wont be forced to have your nominations irrevocably tattooed on your forehead - though by all means felt tip pen them on your bum if you like ;-) There's a thought ! What would be an appropriate song to tattoo on your rear ? "Lasso The Moon", "A Kinder (Brown) Eye", "Tired Of Waiting" (for those of us suffering constipation), "Take A Look" (for the exhibitionists),.... Also, even though the digest provides a lot of good info, it can be a bit of a one way street. The poll gives everyone the chance to contribute, even if anonymously. Well, actually I know who you are, and I enjoyed "chatting" with everyone who's responded. That's it (I hope) - did I say I was going to keep this simple ? What I fool I am ! Ciao for now, Cliff
