From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Sat, 23 Nov 1996 08:14:37 -0800 This goes out to Laurence Green: When I read your letter in Digest #328 I said to myself "That's me!" The exact same thing happened to me back in 1987. I was married to a girl that I thought was the one for me. Little did I know that she was not really happy. In fact, it was around Thanksgiving in 87 when she called me from her parent house to say that she didn't want to be with me anymore. She said that she never really wanted to marry me and never loved me. The world as I knew it came to an end. I know it must be harder for you because your relationship lasted four years whereas my former marriage lasted 18 months. It's OK to feel the way you do. I know those L42 songs you mentioned really hit hard, especially "It's Over". Man, my heart goes out to you. After a few relationships, I have found the right person and I am remarried. I'm not going to sit here and say how you'll get over it and you'll find someone else and crap like that. Life really sucks......... Hang in there. Its magic name is L42. You should listen to the song sang by Mr. Lindup on the Starring at the Sun album. (I don't remember the title but you'll find I'm sure) It's been a drug for me many times in my life. I think that something has lost a couple years ago when Phill and Boon have been left the group. The rest have had to find a new way to go on and it's sounded a little bit strange for the FUNKY fans. On the other hand I guess they've won a lot of new fan who didn't really know the music they played earlier. From that matter I agree. If I were fat I'd play one of the albums realesed before the splitting up for lose the weight. Tim wrote: > Jazz/Funk band? How so? They sound as Pop Rock as Human League. Another thing...exactly what is FUNK? > Is the main, repetitive music in "Hot Water" Mark's bass, Mike's > Keyboard, or both. If you listened to the stuff they've done earlier you would probably understand the difference in sound(look for ie. 'Mr.Pink' or 'Almost there' to clear this problem). The FUNK means a style based on a type of arrangement by 4/4 signature where the rhythm and the bass lines define the basic sound, the other instruments by following that make the whole 'picture' richer. Looking at JAZZ/FUNK parts, the integrity of harmonies and arrangement could be more complicated without leaving the rhythm based environment. The "Hot water"'s basic sequences comes from Mike's computer while Markus plays a very similar pattern with the benefit of slappin' style and these get cool together in fact. Amen! I don't even live on the West Coast, but the two times I went to Southern California in the past few months I made a couple of trips to the Bass Centre. I bought some gear (of which they have much). My only complaint was a lack of lefty basses, but that is a universal problem not limited to the Bass Centre. I loved the store, though, and the guy that is moving back to England is the one that waited on me. Very friendly and helpful to a bass novice such as myself. Any bass player visiting LA has to go there - you won't be disappointed, and it's right off the freeway which makes it easy to get to. It's true that they will ship anywhere; I asked for an instructional book they didn't have, and they ordered it for me and shipped it for free within two weeks. Also, anyone interested in the Jaco instructional videotape, they have a couple of copies, and I think they sell them for $40. Probably worth it, I'm just too green on the bass for it to do me any good. I would call and order it if I were more advanced. > They have an autographed picture of Mark King there on their "Wall of > Fame," I think it's been mentioned before on the list. The first time I went to the store I went with Carl Mueller, and he actually asked the guy if he would be willing to make a copy of the Mark King picture and give it to Carl. Needless to say, he said an emphatic no. Too bad, because it's a cool picture. Oh well. I suppose during my trip to the UK next spring I'll have to visit the original Bass Centre in London. Lolita P.S. Happy Birthday to whoever is actually celebrating one. =) =) =) ------------------------------ Subject: (blushing) From: "Eric J. This has been going on (obviously) for a few years now, and somehow Elson and I always find a way to prompt a big list to-do about this "Day that will live in infamy....." (ominous voice trails off). HOWEVER, it seems that mister JT Crazylips has beaten us to the punch this year. Well, thanks Jeff =) And before any mailboxes get flooded (or spammed, as the case may be), "thanks", I'm a year older, although obviously not a year _more_ modest. Well, let's see. What else. I don't really have any Level-musings for the day. Sorry. -Eric -- Eric J.
