From: djames @ statsci.com (Daniel James) Date: Tue, 30 Jan 1996 11:56:08 -0800 (PST) Hello All... Thanks to Brent Koon who graciously sold me an extra copy of Forever Now [-2+4/sqr(5)+arc(1.794)e+05], errr the Resurgence version. I was honestly not that impressed with the first listen. Remembering that I went through this with Guaranteed when I first got that album and shortly loved it, I've kept listening. Wow--I really like this album now. I think it's just taken a bit to get used to the sound of this album; really some interesting stuff on here. From the folk sounding "Don't Bother Me" to the 'as techno as Level 42 gets' sounding "Learn to Say No", the wonderful texture of "Romance" and the bassy Sunbed Song, there is really some great work on this album. I look forward to the RCA version which is on it's way! Thanks again to Brent, and thanks to all of you and to this list for making me aware that there was a new album available. I heard more than a year ago that it was coming out and I kept checking and checking with some of the stores in the area, but nobody had heard of it (or of Level 42 in some cases I'm sure). I also can't wait for Mark's new album to come out at some point in the future! -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com StatSci, a div of MathSoft, Inc. I would like to say hello again to everyone on the list! I used to subscribe when I was a member of AOL, but now I have left that godforsaken ripoff and have a true internet provider. What a difference! At anyrate, I have comments on two things. First, I am looking for the video Guaranteed Live. Does anyone out there have it? I would be willing to pay for any trouble it would be to make me a copy. I just cannot afford the $90 some-odd that it would cost to order it. Please e-mail if this would be possible. Two - perhaps I could trade with a copy of the new Toto album "Tambu". I purchased this thru CDNow! and it is a complete new album released in Japan with 13 new songs! Lineup includes Steve Lukather, David Paich, Mike Porcaro, and Simon Phillips taking over drums for the now greatly missed Jeff Porcaro. This album is VERY funky, and has some great songs. Please let me know if anyone is interested in this, and it is great to be back! ******************************************************************** * There's an angel standing in the sun, and he's crying with a **** * loud voice... I got this letter when I once bought the 12" of Micro Kid; it was hidden in the sleeve. 26th March 1984 Dear Music Director, I am very pleased to give youz advance notice of two major events in the life of top English band LEVEL 42. 1) They have recently signed for the USA and Canada to A&M Records. 2) They will undertake their first tour of the USA in May 1984. LEVEL 42 have made three albums for Polydor Records UK, none of which have been released before in the USA and Canada. They are one of our top groups in Britain and Europe, selling very well in UK, Germany, Scandinavia and Holland where they have regulary been seen in the Top 10 album and single charts. What they are best known for however is trheir superb live performance, featuring the superb singing and bass playing of their leader Mark King. If you need a bag for them, they are rock-funk ! A&M Records will shortly be releasing their third UK album, titled "Standing in the light" and the first single from it, "Micro Kid". We have great pleasure in sending you an advance copy of the British 12" single of MICROKID which was produced by Larry Dunn and Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire. No doubt A&M will soon be in touch with the album, which ships on April 2nd, but we hope that the 12" is both to your taste and suitable for your station (its hard to keep right up all the way over here!). Lastly, to any of you who may remember me (I used to manage Bram Tchaikovsky and I recognise some of the names on this mail-out list) I'd like to say hello again ! We at Polydor UK are anxious to keep in contact with you as we have many new and exciting developing UK acts (like Fiat Lux, Flesh for Lulu, Lloyd Cole and Orange Juice) that you might like to get directly from us. If so, just let us know. You will see from the attached Date Sheet that Level 42 are playing your city, Yours sincerely, Richard Ogden, Head of International, Polydor UK LEVEL 42 DEBUT TOUR OF USA and CANADA May 16th BOSTON - Paradise Ballroom 17th PHILADELPHIA - Ripleys Music Hall 18th WASHINGTON - The Wax Museum 19th NEW YORK - The Ritz 24th CHICAGO - Park West 25th DETROIT - t.b.c. 26th TORONTO - Concert Hall 27th MONTREAL - Spectrum Dates from 20th to 24th MAY will be confirmed shortly. The only song I'm not crazy about is "A Physical Presence". It's not that I dislike it, it's just not at the top of my list.... FAB ------------------------------ Subject: Hot Water From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 11:07:48 -0500 Being that most americans have never heard of Level 42, I find it as my job as a DJ to introduce them to the group... When it comes to the radio, all of their songs are catchy enough to attract the "brain-dead" who only know the top 10 artists on the radio. These people are not entirely to blame for their lack of musical knowledge. Fact is, radio has been reduced to a handful of acts and that's it. Dj's don't explore the Top 200 or bubling under charts. Hell, they don't explore anything. So, as a dj, I pride myself in exposing new and unheard of acts to the masses. Soon I will be in commercial radio doing the same... Sure, everybody has heard of REM and thinks they are the only group in the world.... Or thinks that the only dance music comes from the Real McCoy. Or that Boys II Men can sing the only ballads.... They change their minds when I play good L42 songs... And I've never seen people dance better to a song than Hot Water.... It's a shame that radio has become so lame....... Check out the size of Tower Records CD selection, (tens of thousands) realising how it represents only a fraction of the World's great artists... Then notice how radio, plays perhaps 10 to 20 of those artists. "The machine stops..." FAB ------------------------------ Subject: Worldmachine.com mail problems From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 14:35:24 -0500 (EST) Folks, I finally just got resolution to a problem that my service provider was having with delivering mail. FYI, for anyone who sent mail to any address @worldmachine.com in the past few weeks and had it bounced back, this problem was caused by my provider's mail machine having a date of 2036 A.D. (as opposed to 1996!) They've corrected the problem, so things should be smooth sailing again. PLEASE let me know if you experience any more problems with bounced/undeliverable mail from worldmachine.com! I agree totally! I also really wish those instrumental performances from Physical Presence were available on CD, and since I don't have a turntable, anything that's only on vinyl (eg all those remixes and many B-sides) are not accessable to me. A rarities album is a great idea! I just e-mailed Resurgence with my wish list for a "from the vaults" CD. Their e-mail address is: rob @ vprint.demon.co.uk Now, I don't know how many of you have heard the first rule of lobbying, but basically, "EVERY LETTER COUNTS"! Here in Canada, our members of Parliament consider anything more than 10 letters on a single subject a LANDSLIDE of public opinion, since each of those letters counts for many more people who didn't bother to write! So, even if only 20 or 25 of us wrote letters to Resurgence, saying that we wanted a "from the vaults" album, I bet we could get one rolling! I even suggested to Resurgence that they could interactively develop the tracklist by writing to our newsgroup. OK, that's it. Don't you think it'd be COOL to have a Level 42 album on the market with "special thanks to the Level 42 Digest members" on it? Fire up your e-mail programs, and let's get this thang goin'! PS If you like, send a cc of your mail to Resurgence to me at: jeremy.theal @ utoronto.ca I will keep track of the number of requests, and the requests for each song. If we don't get response from Resurgence, then I'll have a record of just how many people mailed them. Then, I can "remind" them just how many people want this album! I'm glad to see this group is still alive and kicking! I was really disenchanted with the post-breakup sound of the band and was discouraged enough to stop buying. However, I've been told recently that it's actually quite good, so, I'm back!!! :) I used to be the biggest fan of all time (heard that one before huh?), but it's true! How many guys can say they've pumped L42 at L.A. IASCA sound off's? Well ok, I was judging not competing but I still got lots of flyer's for shop shows! The thing's that caught my hear about the band's sound was the sophistication, complexity, and thoughtful attention to lyrics, most of which are written from a the standpoint of a man's heart, broken or otherwise. I said "Too cool! A band for a hopelessly romantic guy like myself!" and I was hooked. :) I was kind of alone in my excitment except for a couple of close friends. I've made a few convert's though so I'm trying! Ok, my bio, I'm 30, male, live in the Los Angeles area, work in the software field, and love good music and enjoying life in general. You only go around once, so let's do it properly! :) I'll be listening.... Gabe ------------------------------ Subject: Duplicate goodies ..
