First, "Heaven in my Hands" comes to mind. When I hear the intro keyboards, I cringe. However, the guitar work is great. The whole song sounds like L42 on speed. Now take "The Sun Goes Down". When I hear that intro, I'm primed for the rest of the song. I especially like the extended mix. Ditto for "Hot Water". The whole song on "The Remixes" is excellent. The horns are simple but effective. One of my favoritesI! I really don't care for the intro to "Love in a Peaceful World" but once Mark starts singing, I forget about it. The rest of the song is great. I tend to listen to all my CD's in the "shuffle" mode. That way, I don't anticipate any particular song. How many of us listen to the end of one song and your brain automatically starts on the next one? Being surprised on each new track puts a new twist on the CD. For those truly devoted fans, you may wish to catalogue the songs in your head as they are played and then try to figure out, with one song to go, the name of that last song. I can't honestly say that I don't like any entire song. Each one has an element that I like. I agree that some of the choruses are tedious to listen to and some are downright awful as one writer noted, "nails on a blackboard" but then the song comes back to a verse or instrumental section, and it's redeemed. I also think that familiarity goes a long way in this matter. I have six "compilation" CD's. On The Level, On a Level, Level Best, Turn it On, The Remixes and The Remix Collection. Numerous songs are repeated on these discs. If one were to put these on their 5 or 6 CD changer and press shuffle play, you could conceivably hear the same title 5 or 6X (now everyone is going to look to see if there is a common song on all six - I'll leave it to the fanatics) Could one of the reasons be for not liking a song too much is because it's overplayed? Now, if anyone is still with me, does anyone know, and can name the source of how they know, who says the word "WHAT" after Mark sings "Tell you something" on the song "Hot Water" on the "Remixes" CD at the 3:15 mark? It sounds too low for Mike. It goes, "Tell you something, "WHAT", music is the key to set me free". Date: Fri, 04 Oct 1996 09:02:29 -0500 Hey Mike (and everyone else on the digest!)- Sorry, no word from Jeremy yet. He said that he was going to have those albums burned and on their way, so hopefully they are! On the other hand, I'm trying to get allt he kinks worked out of the DIGEST CD-R machine (HP-4020i). With a bit of luck, I'll be kicking out discs this time next week! Once again, anyone interested in getting the fantastic digest only album, As Years Go By, please drop me a note (mailto:Zaphod @ HUB.ofthe.NET?subject=AYGB). Later! Zaphod Loz- I'm still looking into that MO for you. Richard Smith- please drop me a note. Everyone else- you guys are cool! ;) ------------------------------ Subject: Thanks! From: maarten gorter Date: Fri, 4 Oct 1996 18:29:40 +0100 (MET) Thanks to John Venzon for all those compliments on the DAT tape with Physical Presence tracks I send him... Indeed, the records are still as new, and my brother was kind enough to copy the tracks to DAT. Everyone is scrambling for a copy!!!!! WRT the next disc, may I ask a question, not sarcastically I am genuinly interested in the answer. Why include the three tracks left off the CD for A Physical Prescence? I cant understand why anyone needs these widely available tracks on CD? Surely its far better to include rare mixes and songs on a CD rather than Live stuff PARTICULARLY as Crockfords record label is seemingly only interested in releasing live albums. ie we'll have plenty of live stuff coming anyway. Heres an interesting fact. Seven years was recorded in a basic form in 1989, BEFORE Level best! But it didnt make an appearence until Guaranteed. This just goes to show that its hard to tell when a song was written/recorded and its not always right to say it was written in the year before the album was released! See you tommorow.................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Skipping/FAQ From: Daniel James Organization: Statistical Sciences Date: Fri, 04 Oct 1996 09:39:57 -0700 This part was sent out yesterday, but failed to appear... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, Winston and Lolita, I think you've started something here... I tend to agree with your choices of songs to skip, except for Two Hearts Collide. IMHO, it's the only song on the album that brings back that look & feel of the old Level 42. I also like Over There, but it's certainly not one of the strong points of the album. If there's a song on the album that I skip, it's probably Man. I know it's a good jam, but it seems to carry on. The live version from the flip side of TCOY is even worse, did they sound dead or what? I'd say my list would be: The Chinese Way (of course--I hear Pat whispering something here...) A Pharoah's Dream (Of Endless Time) Dance On Heavy Weather (Good song, but the intro makes me ill) The Chant Has Begun Running In The Family The Ape Model Friend Judgement Day I Feel Free ----------------------------------------------------------------------- > You have to realize how many times just ONE question is answered. > Maybe, if these people asking questions would go to the FAQ page and > then if their question still has not been answered, ask it on the > digest. Well, I agree with this, however I think the FAQ may need to be updated a bit. One of the most asked questions these days seems to be about the B-Sides disk, and perhaps some mention of it should go in there. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel James - Database Administrator djames @ statsci.com DAPD Div of MathSoft (formerly StatSci) (206) 283-8802 x284 ------------------------------ Subject: I'm back - y'all miss me?! From: mm95 @ worldonline.nl (Mighty Maomoondog) Date: Fri, 04 Oct 96 21:38:01 GMT Hey everybody (or at least, those of you who remember me)!!! I finally managed to get an e-mail account of my own. I needed one since I no linger could use the one at the university. So: I'M BACK!!!! Well anyway, in my absence I got tapes of all the solo work (Boon, Mark, Mike) and I like all of the albums. Some people seem to dislike Tinman but I think it's pretty good - especially the song 'Knight'. 'Influences' is excellent, of course and so is 'Changes'. By the way, in Mike's song 'Lovely Day' he sings about some guy whose 'story of glory started in 1942'!! Is this a coincidence or what! But this has probably been noted many many times. Well, I won't make it too long. I just read the past few Digests and 1. I would also subscribe to a Talk Talk Mailing List! They are brilliant! 2. I have an idea for a live disc. How about mixing all its tracks 'together' so it'll kinda sound like a concert. By this I mean only mixing the audience's responce (i.e. applauding, yelling, WHISTLING). This would be better than constantly fading in and out. That's it for now, glad to be back! -- "he thought of cars and where where to drive them but there there was no one no one" (c) 1995 Blur The Mighty Maomoondog (MM95 @ WorldAccess.nl) ------------------------------ Subject: CWYH remix / least fav. tunes From: Roberto Vargas Date: Fri, 04 Oct 1996 21:41:29 -0500 Ok, here's the low down on the "Lessons In Love (The Shep Pettibone Remixes)", which includes the CWYH remix. Lessons In Love (Shep Pettibone Remixes) CN 1985 (Polydor POLSXD 123) Side One - Lessons In Love (12" remix)7:48 Side Two - I Sleep On My Heart 4:04 - Can't Walk You Home (remixed by Mark King and Jerry Boys from an original recording by Nick Launay) 4:12 Side Three - Lessons In Love (Dub mix) 5:45 Side Four - Wold Machine (remix) 5:39 I'll keep my eye out for any more copies, Loz has first dibs on a copy. BTW I just saw another one at a local record convention, this last weekend. I didn't bother getting it, 'cause I'd just bought one, sorry guys! On another note, here's my list of least favourite L42 tunes. * The Chineese Way (Sorry, but the song just irritates me, I like the recent live versions though!) * The Chant (After a while it just sounds a little thin, you know what I mean?) * Guaranteed (I think the song could have used another verse!) * Tired of Waiting (I find it just drags a little.) Anyways, I just want to ask if there's going to be another Levelfest in New York or any nearby city any time soon. And if there are any L42 fans who live in Montreal, drop me a line (it's kind of lonely over here!).
