From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 08:36:33 -0400 (EDT) In honor of Mr. Tucker Hass' arrival this Saturday, we're going to have an official Beantown Levelfest. We'll be meeting in Harvard Square at 4pm at a newsstand called "Out Of Town News". The definite attendance list so far is Tucker, Bruce Conrad and myself. Anyone else who's interested should email me (eric @ worldmachine.com) to RSVP - we don't want to ditch anyone because we didn't know that they were coming! Preliminary plans seem to include shopping (lots of great new/used/vinyl shops in the area), eating, drinking, and listening to live music (lots of all of these!) I *know* there are upwards of ten subscribers in the Boston area... c'mon out of the woodwork! -Eric -- Eric J. Of course I've forgotten his name, but it > was John something, McLaughlin maybe... :) That would be Bobby McFerrin. John McLaughlin was the guitarist in Mahavishnu and also has some incredible solo work out there (with Kai Eckhardt on bass - didn't we talk about him a while back?). Now, where are all of you guys hearing this? Sounds like a recording I need to get ahold of. . . Hey everybody, the new Eric Johnson sounds great! And look at the liner notes - Chris Searles and Chris Maresh are on the album - both friends of mine. -Will ------------------------------ Subject: Lefty Bass Problem Solved From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 06:34:33 -0700 Hey All: Thank all of you who e-mailed me with suggestions for lefty basses. My problem has been solved by a fellow digester, Jeff Thatcher (crazylips). He is also a lefty and has agreed to sell me his Ibanez for a very reasonable price. To the person who is lefty but plays righty - you are in good company. Mark King is left handed, but plays bass righty. At any rate, thank you all for your help. From: Cassiano D`Almeida Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 11:28:16 -0300 Hi everybody, just let me introduce myself. I am from the city of Curitiba, in the South of Brazil but now I am living in Sao Paulo. I am 22 and I am a L42 fan since my childhood; (it's not that I am not a kid anymore...). If I am not wrong, L42 never played in Brazil (and probably never will). So, you can imagine how difficult is to be a L42 fan here in my country, where every new L42 release takes months to arrive!...I bought all the L42 CD's I could find but I wouldn't say that I've got a great collection. Here it goes: The early tapes Level 42 The pursuit of accidents True colors World machine Running in the family Staring at the sun Garranteed Forever now Remixes Take care of yourself (single) So, as you can see, there is a lot of stuff that I don't even know that exists. I'd like to know if anybody would have something else to sell to me. I'd love to buy some videos of their concerts and some rare stuff, like singles, for example. Talking more clearly, ANYTHING that you can give me would be just fantastic! To show my gratitude, I could send (almost) anything that you always wanted to know about Brazil (and about Brazilian music) and you never had the opportunity to ask. Feel free to ask me about any kind of Brazilian stuff. Well, I think that's all for today. (Sorry about any English mistake) Bye, Cassiano ------------------------------ Subject: .....I've been working all this overtime From: Mike Wiethorn Organization: Kirkwood Community College Date: Wed, 4 Sep 96 12:50:00 -0500 Hi y'all........ As for the SOS thoughts........Swing Out Sister also had hits with "Twilight World", "Not Gonna Change", and "Am I the same Girl". I play "Breakout" at the club all the time.....people love it. Sure, their lyrics aren't profound...and it's light, fluffy pop....but it's GOOD pop music....no crime in that. At least it's better than wimps like Pearl Jam who blend pop with rock and it comes out sounding like mush. From: NrsngDude @ aol.com Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 16:50:20 -0400 Dear friends, I am pleased to announce that the winner of the Staring at the Sun world-wide contest is Bruce Conrad. His name was the lucky one drawn from the hat!! Congratulations BRUCE!!!!! Anyhow, I just wanted to let all of you know how much I appreciated the effort that many of you put into this fun contest. I had a total of 54 entries, which is quite substantial! Glad it wasn't anymore than that. Whew! Also, I did want to include the four people's entries who took the time to write out the essay. Sorry that didn't work, but I think they deserve a lot of credit and thanks! -- If I decide to make another contest, then their names will automatically be entered. Here's their responses: ======== When I flip a Level 42 disc into the player and KAH-RANK IT UP, I get goose bumps and a shiver up my spine! It doesn't matter what song, I get banged right between the eyes and don't even *try* to stop that leg from twitching to the beat, my friend. HEY YEAH! Well, at least it's less than 60 words!!! -- Marc Dupuis ======== MY FRIENDS LAUGHED WHEN I STRAPPED ON MY BASS... but boy, when they heard me play! They thought I'd had years of lessons, but here's the secret: Level 42! All I had to do was listen to their music, and it gave me the musical keys I needed to become a real "bass monster". "Intelligent music with a groove," I call it, and it's bound to change your life! I know it did for me. For full info, send $9.95 to... --Pat Flanagan ======== _L_oftily composed melodies (by 'loftily', I mean 'dignifiedly') _E_xquisitely intricate harmonies _V_ivaciously vivid vocals _E_ncouraging and inspiring musicianship _L_ively performances _F_irst-rate bass playing _O_therworldly (yes, it's really a word!) and original _R_efined and intelligently written lyrics _T_alent personified _Y_auld (look it up - it's a real word!) and energetic rhythms _T_aintless and impeccable virtuosity _W_hy did they have to break up? _O_h, how terribly I'll miss them! -- Zaron ======== Listening to Level 42 is like falling in love...there is an incredible sense of freefalling into a sensless void of ectstacy. Who could forget that tremendous feeling of joy and bliss? As long as there is Level 42 to listen to there will be a reminder of one of life's most precious moments! --STACEY M. REHN ======== Thanks again, and MAYBE I'll have another contest coming up soon! Take Care of Yourself! The guy in question in Bobby McFerrin. His rather varied career has brought him recently to the conductor's podium of a major symphony orchestra, if memory serves me. For possibly the best a capella album ever recorded, check out "The Voice", recorded live. Just Bobby and a mic in front of an awe-struck crowd. He performs some cover material ("Blackbird" springs to mind) as well as some originals (e.g. "I Am My Own Walkman"). The connection with L42: Um, er, well, they're all very talented. ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: Thank you and no thank you From: "Jay Tracy" Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 19:36:05 -0400 (EDT) Just about all the "thank you"s you'll see/hear on any Level 42 concert will come from Mark. Take for example the _Guaranteed Live_ video where it's just about the only thing he ever says, I think with that show he even rivals the great Ella Fitzgerald with his thank you count ! (you "jazz" people will know when I say that, that it's alot). And on a boring note, for those with the cable station VH-1, there is a special called Storytellers, Sting is featured this month, if it doesn't put you to sleep you can see and sometimes hear our pal Dom Miller. At least I think it's him, being that his hair is always in his face ;-) (relax long-hairs, I have the same hair style as Mr. Miller). ..jay ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #248 From: Xaqtly @ primenet.com (Zak Nilsson) Date: Thu, 5 Sep 1996 00:18:12 -0700 >> >I heard some bass solos by MK, but this time, it has 'alien' lyrics! >> >It is around 3.5 minutes long, and MK plus ML are singing "They don't know, >> >what I know" and "Talking to my baby" >> Sounds like (IMHO) an improvised thing.
