Virtually all known cases of "bronzing" to date were caused by a defective lacquer formula on certain discs pressed by PDO around 1989 and 1990. PDO are in fact repressing some out-of-print titles in order to offer replacements. Your best bet if you have a bronzing disc is to contact PDO directly; contact info is in the rec.music.marketplace/collecting FAQ as I mentioned a couple digests back. On The Level is the second disc in my collection to exhibit this problem, which means that a whopping 0.118% of the discs I own are affected. I'm not losing a lot of sleep over the issue, to be honest. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------ Subject: Twee Revealed From: flanagan @ mwci.net (Pat Flanagan) Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 13:47:46 -0600 >3) Pat, are you the one who introduced the term "twee"? Actually, I first heard it used by Tom Jones, one of my idols (no sarcasm intended, I'm for real here), when he was talking about how so many bands today are more style than substance. I think his words were something like "I don't need to poof my hair out and where all kinds of fluffy clothing. It's all so twee." I would say the meaning of "twee" is the same as the meaning of "precious" when used with sarcasm. >5) Re: 80's music is so much better than 90's music >Don't get me wrong, there's a fair amount of tripe on the airwaves today, >but are we talking about the same 80's I remember? I like the Children Say video as well... It has a very "Happy" feeling about it; however the Gould's are conspicuously missing, hmm... However, I think that Something About You is one of my favorite video's ever. It's very rich in texture, I mean, it's got a bit of complexity that Music Videos rarely even attempt. Lot's of little things to notice the more you watch. Some of the little things that I like are: Mark gestering to the stranger asking if he has a cigarette, the confusion in the Cab as the train is inside the tunnel, not to mention just the overall flow of the video (and the 'scream' as everything melds together). ------------------------------ Subject: Our lads in Toronto From: "Friesen, Alex" Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 13:01:00 -0500 Our lads in Toronto 96/01/22 12:30 Cliff, as far as I know L42 only played Toronto twice (yes, I went both times). The first time was for the World Machine tour and was - I have been told - the first North American gig they did as Level 42. They wore sweats on the Massey Hall stage and did an unprecedented four encores. The second time was the Maple Leaf Gardens gig you mentioned. I had freebie tickets for that one. I sold the drum tech a new cable hi-hat for Phil earlier in the day and he gave me the comps. I ordered FN the day I could prove its existence (a mere one year after it was released). I paid CDN$40 for it. Ouch. Ever notice that, from a distance, The Ape and Fashion Fever sound very similar? ...Alex... Just signed myself up to the list so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a Brit who's now living in the US (Soccer - the real name for Footie? Pah!) and am terribly depressed now that the band has split. I became a fan at around the time The Chinese Way was released. I only managed to see the band perform live once. This was in Cambridge, UK in 1993. Fortunately they performed twice in Cambridge that year (at the start of the tour, which I missed, and the end of the tour, which I saw). My biggest regret is that I didn't get to see them more. I have just placed an order for FN+4 having read about it through the list - I would never have known about it otherwise. I purchased the RCA FN in the UK just before I relocated to the US. Has anyone heard of the track "Can't Walk You Home" ? (At least I think that's the correct name - I don't have the tape with me so I can't confirm it). I discovered a tape with about 4 tracks on it way back in (circa) 1987 which was an import to the UK! It had the above mentioned track on it, plus a few others (Lessons in Love, I think). Anyone heard of it? Regarding Standing In The Light, its still quite easily available in the UK (I just bought it on CD at Xmas) and as I go back to the UK a couple of times a year, I'd be willing to get Level42 stuff if people requested it. Having read the list for a few days now, there do appear to be mention of some tracks I've never heard of by the band. I'm not an absolute die hard fanatic in that I don't feel I must have every single remix of every track, but I would like to have the tracks I'm missing completely. I'll mention them in another post sometime, but if someone would be willing to put them on tape for me you'd warm the cockles of one old, slightly depressed fan. Catch ya later. I was at home in Ireland over Christmas and had the hardest time trying to locate THE album, I tried Virgin twice, HMV etc. etc., I still came up zilch. Perhaps the easiest thing for me to do is to send a cheque to some one either here or the U.K. (Loz?) and you could send it over. Tell what the CD and shipping is in sterling and I'll do the rest. The trip home was brilliant, aprt from the cold (I'm currently living in San Francisco). Saw old friends, nursed a few hang-overs and generally had a great time. Rob Steen!, are you looking forward to going back home? next month I believe ?? see your folks, friends etc.? and of course that magnificent bass of yours, the Alembic Series II.... hoo hoo!! From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 11:02:38 -0500 Why does it seem like here in the states, we never get the same versions of albums that they do in Europe or Japan? Why didn't we get the same World Machine album they got in the UK? It's not just Level 42 either, so many European albums are different from the US versions... Now I understand the thinking of only giving us the most "Radio Friendly" tracks, but why chop up a great album and send it overseas? Another question. Why do record companies discontinue albums so quickly after their release, especially once they've established themselves on the charts? It's almost like they're giving us a limited time to buy albums. The worst record company of all in this regard, has to be Chrysalis. Almost half of their catalog is out of print already in the US, and they never back the artists that are still in print. So here's my idea for all the record companies.... Make one really great version of an album, and sell it everywhere, and keep it in print for more than 2 years so we don't have to spend $30 to get it from Europe..Or $50 from Japan. I also have another, more costly suggestion; :-) I used to work at a label design company; I was the electronic prepress guy. I still know everybody there and I'm friends with the current prepress guy. What I'm saying is that if we all really want some labels, I can get them mass-produced at cost, which really isn't very much. All I would need is some good, clean artwork, (I can scan some myself, if I have to), and money and snail-mail addresses from anybody who's interested. I can do all the negatives and stuff where I work now. If people are interested, I'll call for pricing. The labels can be however many colors we want them to be (more colors = more $$) and we can have them done however we want any shape, any size, we can even have them done transparent with the adhesive on the face, for putting on the inside of your car window. we can do bumper stickers, little round stickers, whatever. If I get at least a few requests, I'll check it out. It won't really be worth it price-wise if only a couple people want them. TSonoi kind of inspired me; (thank you) I'm only doing this in case there's a huge demand for L42 stickers. Unfortunately they're not free; but they won't be too expensive either. the cool thing is that we can design them. On another note, I can also get t-shirts done. Again, I can use any art from anything, as long as it's decent. I work at a graphic design/prepress house right now, and I have access to all the equipment I could possibly need. So there's a possibility for t-shirts...if there's interest, let me know! Sorry to take up so much bandwidth; I just thought I'd offer those services, since they're there. :) Zak ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V96 #23 From: Elson Trinidad Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 03:38:54 -0800 (PST) > Subject: We're only human... > From: GVermette @ aol.com > Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 18:04:44 -0500 > > Hi Folks! > > TTrudell, Mark says "We're only human after all." at the end of the > "Something About You"video. As some of you may know, these types of messages are shady attempts at advertising, and rarely come from a legitimate email address. For all I know, this person may not exist. The list has gotten several messages of this nature in the past, but I'm usually quick enough to delete them before they get distributed in the digest. Since I'm still in the proces of relocating myself to a new apartment, though, I haven't been able to log on to my machine as frequently as normal (worldmachine.com is currently at erics.parents.house.com). Again, I apologize for the spam! 2. About the "clunkiness" of L42 videos that someone mentioned a few issues back, isn't the video for "My Father's Shoes" also a concept video like "Micro Kid"? And how about the vid for (I think) "Take a Look"? This is the one that they talk about in Fait Accompli, with the cool zoom shot on Mike playing piano in a bar. 3. Just got FN+4. It rocks totally. The sonics ARE much better, and the extra tracks are well worth the price. Other than "Tired of Waiting", which ironically isn't on FN+4, there's no reason to get the RCA release, IMHO. 4. new Level 42 Homepage. What's the deal with this? I suppose I don't have a problem with _more_ material being available on the web, but does it have to be fractured across different sites? Well... that's about it! -Eric -- Eric J.
