From: Amanda K Paulette Date: Sat, 20 Jan 1996 17:44:08 -0500 (EST) Hello all, Sorry for lurking for the past couple of months, as I have been playing the poor, put-upon grad student role to the hilt (voluntary servitude: gotta love it). I will try to keep this short, but I'm not guaranteeing anything: 1) I apologize for the trouble with the T-shirt designs (which are, by the way, long gone) that people had with the Marvin server. I didn't mean to leave the list hanging, but you know, stuff came up. And it could be better. (If it's of any use, I'm taking a Photoshop class this semester and I need a project, so I'm trying to think up something cool. If it involves L42 and could be used for T-shirts, I will certainly let y'all know...) 2) Speaking of problems with servers, I'm going to try to alleviate the problem by moving my homepage to http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~apaulet (again, I can't guarantee that it will work any better; I have some choice things to say about Clemson's computing services, but this is not the time or place). It's going through total overhaul, but it'll be much cooler, I swear. 3) Pat, are you the one who introduced the term "twee"? If so, I hate you. It's my new word and I get funny looks when I use it, and excessive eye-rolling when I can't say exactly what it means. (But it just sounds soooo cool...) 4) Re: Spewing venom upon Alanis, Hootie, Blues Traveller, et al.: Being stranded in South Carolina (state motto: "Oh, yeah, _Hootie_ had been playing here for years before they got big..."), I can _really_ appreciate their overexposure. But honestly, just because VH-1 needs to pull in the (*cringe*) Gen X crowd, it seems unfair to blame it on the artists. C'mon, Hootie's about innocuous as they come. But I think some folks here are bitter that our boys never achieved that level (_NO_ pun) of attention. But if they had, would we have been able to converge here, congratulating ourselves in our superior taste in music? Kids, lighten up! You'd prefer hearing Michael Bolton at every turn? [My $0.02 on Alanis, as I have just listened to my roommate's CD: yes, the yodeling gets a little old. I'm sure she's trying to distance herself from her bubblegum past. The lyrics aren't all terrible, but once the yodeling got to me after song 9. I felt the emotion was a little forced towards the theatrical, but again I ask, would you prefer some overblown, pseudo-emoting phony like Mariah Carey?] 5) Re: 80's music is so much better than 90's music Don't get me wrong, there's a fair amount of tripe on the airwaves today, but are we talking about the same 80's I remember? The decade that pelted us with Tiffany, New Kids, Debbie Gibson, Belinda Carlisle, Wilson Phillips, Paula Abdul and (a-hem) Milli Vanilli? (And please remember that I was in England from `83-`87; for benefit of Brits on here, remember 5-Star? Be honest, did you just cringe?) If I had it to do over again, I would round up all my friends' copies of "Thriller" (I was the only kid in the neighborhood without any Michael Jackson memorabilia), burn `em, and encourage everyone to get on with their lives. Okay, last one... 6) Tell me this, y'all: As it looks like I have been awarded a year-long research assistantship through IBM (I'll be staying in Clemson, tho; Grrrr...), I would like to reward myself. I've been itching to order "Forever Now," so tell me yea, nay, either way. I'd really like to honestly know how it sounds. So take care y'all. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.-- --Amanda :) (Ahhhh, I feel much better now having de-lurked.) ------------------------------ Subject: Screen Saver? Ooh, can I get one of those?! I'm a latecomer to the list and I missed out. :( Also, still waiting for Forever Now from CDNow. They sent me Thomas Dolby (Aliens Ate My Buick) which I ordered from them at the same time... I may be forced to buy a video soon, as I never had MTV in the 80s and consequently have never seen any of their videos nor any of their concerts. Damn, I'm deprived... If anyone can get it for me, I will send the cash and >postage for it. Please let me know. I've seen almost all of their albums available locally (in South Bend, IN), EXCEPT for Standing In The Light. My poor old vinyl LP version is wearing thin from being played too much, and I want to get the CD, if I can ever find it (I know, it has tinny audio quality). Good luck, Lol. >And Wow! What a list of 80's bands! Truly impressive. You forgot Joe Jackson, >as many have. Also the Romantics and their one hit. The Romantics actually had a number of hits. I assume the one hit you're referring to is "What I Like About You" (you really hold me ti-eeeet). But don't forget "Talking In Your Sleep" (where have I heard that song title before...). Also, re: Joe Jackson, anyone else have his "Jumpin' Jive" CD from 1981? IMHO, his best album, even though it's all cover versions of old 40's big band numbers, but it's STOMPIN'. >You know what 90's music is? It's 80's music with a different lyric track. I WISH it was that good. To me, the 80's were a decade of MUSIC. I'd just ASSUME listen to that same MUSIC with different lyrics. >I especially dig the sports shits with "Level 42" in giant block lettering on >them. AAhhhhhhhhh, you mean "shirts", right? HAW HAW HAW! Actually, I think I had sports shits once after a particularly rough game of football (that's American football for Brits, not soccer (which, by the way, is the TRUE name of the game played with a round white ball and two goals). >Re: the 99 dollar Guaranteed Live shown on CDNow, I don't have it either (as >I may have mentioned before but I know none of you memorize everything I say) >and I was wondering if anyone ever bought it from CD Now and it ever actually >arrived at your home. I have a copy of it, and it's a great performance. As a prelude to the Bad Song Lyric of the Day, I'd like to apologize for possibly not having the lyrics word-for-word correct. See, I've only heard the song a few times on VH1, and it's so laughably bad, that I end up missing the exact lines, due to my frantic guffawing. I'm also not sure of the song title, but it's gotta be one of the worst song lyrics of all time. Someone help me out with the title. Speaking of bad music, anyone else heard the new "Life" album by Simply Red? Now, they're one of my favorite groups, but this album sucks sport shirts. It's one of my favorites, period. More than any other song on that album, I think that's the link between Running in the Family and Staring at the Sun. I'm not sure why they chose not to release it and to go with the funked-up version of Tracie instead. Back when I bought my copy of Staring, right as it first came out, the sticker said "Including the singles Heaven In My Hands, Take A Look, and Two Hearts Collide." Subsequently they changed that to include Tracie instead. They even went as far as to have Tom Lord Alge do that Two Hearts Collide remix, undoubtedly at the same time that he did the Heaven In My Hands remix. Question: does anyone know if he did the Tracie remix, too? ------------------------------ Subject: level video From: JNSMITH @ msuvx2.memphis.edu Date: Sat, 20 Jan 1996 11:21:46 -0600 (CST) Hey guys! From: Fabfriday @ aol.com Date: Sat, 20 Jan 1996 11:17:23 -0500 Well, I'm glad you were all impressed with my 80's New Wave list.... Like many of you said, the 90's music scene is getting dull, and the 80's music sounds just as new today as it did then... In fact, 90's music IS 80's music with bad lyrics as one of you pointed out..... I'm thinking of creating an 80's New Wave Web site if there is enough interest, and if anyone would like to help, let me know..... We need to let LEVEL 42, and all of those other forgotten bands of the 80's live on.... Also, I've put together a 20 Volume 80's retrospective from CD to Metal Tape for some friends, and could make some more copies for those of you who are interested. They include all the bands I mentioned, plus more.... Most of the songs are out of print, but I found them all on CD imports...... From one fan to the next.... PS: Any Human Leaguers looking for the out of print Romantic? or other HL albums, e-mail me... I can get them to you (A few copies are around here). PS2: Same goes for the L42 fans, I can get a hold of some out-of -print imports for L42,,, ------------------------------ Subject: The list is in... In one room they have two walls of individual tv screens all right next to eachother. The screens feature various shots of concerts, album covers, artists and news of that particular era. All these scenes roll continuoulsly to the present. In the end, one set of screens shows a giant mosh pit (from the last Woodstock show I think) with this heavy grunge/guitar music-I think it's Primus. On the other set of screens is Bill Haley and the Comments in concert, and they're steppin' right in time to the grunge/guitar stuff! It's pretty wild. Tho' no L42 anywhere, the Hall of Fame is really a neat place to see. Funk/Soul is represented pretty heavily by George Clinton/Parliment. Theres no way the place could satisfy everyone, and alot of groups are underepresented but its definatly worth seeing. Talk to ya later.
