This sounds to me like one of the old-style 'Laughing Policemen' booths that you find at on the piers of deserted old seaside resorts. For US/overseas readers who may not be familiar with the traditional British 'Laughing Policeman', it's in a similar vein to the fortune teller in the movie 'Big' - ie. a bust of a figure in a booth which, in this case, laughs if you insert money. Not exactly what passes for entertainment these days but from an era when these were fun- that's what makes this reference so accurate, clever and poignant. The overall mood of the song: of desolation and emptiness is summed up by a single haunting and eerie sound which on its own means little but included within the context of the song immediatly paints a picture of a "...in a seaside town, when the shutters go up... etc etc" - the town is now behind the times and bereft - the crowds which once gave the town life have moved on and now the town, with its now ironic tourist paraphernalia, seems sad, isolated and moribund. This represents very clever and, as I've said before, mature writing, creating more from less - in stark contrast to the bubblegummy "Level 42 Lite" mentioned recently. I have always really enjoyed that song, and it has long been one of my favorites on World Machine. What about The Machine Stops? When I was younger I hate A Pharo's Dream (of Endless Time) but I have come to appreciate it as time has gone by. I must also admit that I REALLY didn't like the entire Physical Presence album and for the LIFE of me I dont know why. As l42 fans go I am a bit of a purist for the earlier stuff. What about "You Can't Blame Louis?" Kind of a wierd song lyrically, but a good song I think. Opinions? NEIl ------------------------------ Subject: HELP!!!!!!? From: matthew rice Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 12:58:24 -0600 I've relocated to New Mexico recently and haven't read any of the digests for the last 2 or 3 months. A couple of burning questions: (private e-mail answers preferred) 1) Who is coordinating the purchase of a CD-R for the digest? I would like to talk with them. 2) My cd "On the Level" is bronzing. There was an address published last year on the digest to write to for a replacement. Can someone who has info about this send it to me? 3) During my two or three month absence a CD or two was produced by digest members. Anyone with info about ordering one of these cd please e-mail me. 4) What is the difference between the FN +3 and the other two (FN & FN +4)? VINCE - I live close to Albuquerque. We should have a New Mexico levelfest. Anyone interested e-mail me. Matt Rice mtr12160 @ statsun4.byu.edu ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Uh, whatever. Jules ------------------------------ Subject: MIDI setup From: Tae Hong Park Organization: LG Electronics Central Research Lab. Date: Sat, 27 Jul 1996 09:59:49 -0400 Hello, Good morning/afternoon/evening, whatever it may be at your end of the world. I can imagine that there are musicians on this list... Does anyone know what kind of MIDI setup L42 is using while on tour? I have seen some of their concerts and vidoes but couldn't get a good view of the equipment they were using to "sync" with MIDI sequences. It is my understanding that Mark King plays on top of a sequenced synth bass, I guess to boost the low frequencies to give a more dynamic and 'bassy' sound since he uses thinner(i.e lighter) strings than most bass players which gives you that twanging slap n' pop sound. Mike Lindup also use a lot of keyboard sequences as it would be impossible for him to tacke all the keyboard lines by himself live, unless he's somehow 'multi-tasking'. I have not seen any headphones or the like when they play on stage. Has anyone any information on this? Thanks -- Tae Hong Park, Engineer LG Electronics Central Research Lab. I got it a little while back and it is a very creative musical achievement with excellent vocals. I should emphasize that it is a very *individual* album, so anybody wanting a surrogate Level 42 album is SOL. (It would be unfair and too limiting, to expect that of a creative artist anyway) And to our friend Tjeerd in Holland (he jochie!), the Chant could qualify under protestsongs, eventhough that term usually applies to Robert Zimmerman and the like. I like it ESPECIALLY because after it was released in Holland (following the highly succesful Hot Water) it became "de meest geflopte plaat van het jaar". Loosely translated that means the record that BOMBED the hardest this year ;-] Zak, thanks 10E6 for the offer. I'll get in touch to work out some details. later, Carl //////---- *********************The Answer is 42********************* ----////// (cmueller @ silicon.csci.csusb.edu) (cmueller @ inland.net)
