Well, mr. Roland Gould wrote the lyrics and the music was written by Mark King and Phil Gould. At least, that's what the inlay of my True Colours tape says. Strange though, that the lyrics of MH are not included in the CD-booklet, huh? As for people not liking Gary's drumming - I also happen to believe that Phil's drumming suits the Level 42 style better, but I also know that Gary is an excellent drummer. I mean, on the albums he has worked on everything sounds just great (you're right, At This Great Distance is a truly magnificent song) but when he plays older stuff that was originally recorded with(/for?) Phil he doesn't sound as good. Hey hey! I am one of those lucky people who have the 'Limited Edition Interview CD' of My Father's Shoes. Pretty funny interview, I think. Quote: INTERVIEWER:Mark, you've been together for over ten years now, bla bla bla... MARK:What, me personally... have I been together for over ten years...? (Oh well, never mind) One more thing about My Father's Shoes. Last week I visited Maarten, who is also a member of this digest, and we both came to the conclusion that they should never have released My Father's Shoes as a single. It is a pretty good song and all, but not hit material. I think that they (as in the RCA people) should have done with Her Big Day the same thing as what they did with Tracie. Speed it up a little, make a few excellent remixes and voila: a hit is born. But that's only my humble opinion... any comments? Also, if you are looking for a good cd where Mark plays, look at the Midge Ure solo stuff. Mark played on about half the songs on "The Gift." I've never heard of the guy, but I have yet to see anyone who >looks as much like Mark. I've been a BIG fan of both Mark and my super secret lookalike for years. I noticed it the minute I first saw Mark. I even showed a picture of Mark to my dad (who also likes Level 42 and Tears For Fears -- he's a cool 55-year-old), and the first words out of his mouth were, "Jeez, that guy looks just like ___________________." Lolita brought up "True Believers." I've always like this song, both from a musical standpoint (what a FUN bassline to play! -- not TOO difficult, not TOO easy, and a great one to impress your friends with) and from a lyrical standpoint. Great commentary on the "TV Preacher" phenomenon. Off-topic: Go see Eddie Murphy's "The Nutty Professor." I saw it last night and laughed myself silly. A LOT of fart jokes (which is still ok), but overall a great movie that should definitely revive his career. He's great in it, and so is Jada Pinkett. It has been over 6 months since I'v read this excellent digest. I really missed reading your discussions about the best band ever, but finally I'm back now with my own internet-adress at home instead of the university. I'm Ernst-Jan van der Hee from Rijswijk, Holland, 26 years old, a fan since 1987, favourite album Forever Now, favourite song "Freedom Someday" (incase you wonder). I just read the latest news letters and it striked me that some of you are talking about a b-sides cd. It just happens that I produced one for myself. This is my track-listing (with thanks to Maarten Gorter -> geef me je email-adres even door!) : 1. Forty Two (12'') 2. Foundation and Empire parts 1 & 2 (studio version) 3. Micro Kid (12'') 4. 88 (live) 5. Standing in the light (12'') 6. The chant has begun (powermix) 7. Can't walk you home (12'') 8. The return of the handsome rugged man (12'') 9. Turn it on (live) 10. Mr. Pink (live) By the way my favourite of the "rarities" is Freedom (Thunderthumbs and the toetsenman) I'm looking forward to discuss the music of Level 42! Bye, Ernst-Jan van der Hee ------------------------------ Subject: Strange sounds in songs From: jeremy.theal @ utoronto.ca Date: Mon, 1 Jul 1996 13:15:23 -0400 I can identify with the "strange unidentified sounds in songs" thing... I think it's all a trick of an individual's mind, though. This is probably why different people hear different things, and it probably has to do with what one's mind is conditioned/programmed to hear or be listening for. For example, in Michael Jackson's song, "Keep it in the Closet", I swore that the gloved one was saying my name, numerous times in the song. When I finally looked a the lyric sheet, I realized he was saying "dare me..." not "Jeremy..." I was kind of relieved, since the nosejobposterchild said "Jeremy/dare me..." in a very salacious, erotic sort of way, and it was NOT turning me on! Now I should use the disclaimer that in the above example, I thought I heard things in that song because I was "conditioned" to hear my NAME, NOT because I was wishing that Michael would seduce me!!!! (just so you're all not worried.... anyway, I think I'm too old for him... I'm 23! OUCH!) Uhh... Ooops. I didn't mean it that way. Let's see, how can I salvage this comment. What I should've said is that he's playing a SynthAxe on most of the album, and in his case, it makes his loudish whiny sound even more whiny. Okay, I'm generalizing about the his whiny sound--I do enjoy some of his playing, but the tone he's using with the SynthAxe (at least on this particular album--Atavacron for those of you just tuning in) is nails-on-chalkboard sounding to me. It sounds like something inbetween a guitar and a violin only in this case it doesn't work (otherwise I'd probably start going off and rambling about Jean-Luc Ponty whom I do like). Anyway, sorry for sounding like such a prude--I don't think the above comments have rectified that at all however... :) Okay, on another note, I scored this weekend. I visited a used record store where I found (in fairly good condition) a copy of Starchild (remix)/Foundation and Empire pts1/2 with the zodiac looking sleve (which is not in as good of condition as the record itself). Then I headed south to pick up a copy of Influences for Lolita and found a copy of Live at Wembley!!! Kewl. I'm fairly impressed. I like some of the transitions they did, even though you can tell many of them are not the same as they were live (they did a good job with the editing though). The sound quality is good, and they left in some of the audience interaction as well as the introductions and so on. This seems to be rare in live albums. They usually chop off anything that isn't pure music (which I think is a shame). IN this case,, they left on enough extraneous stuff to give it a good feel. The album's about 76 minutes long though, so they would have had to drop off a song to get a bass solo in. I agree with the double album idea as well. Live albums are usually *only* bought by fans, so why not make it a double? > good luck trying to find the cd in the States. I bought mine > in dec '87 and it has Mark from the "it's over" video on the > cover (!). I have some contacts in Holland that can hook you > up, if you want. I bought the vinyl in '85 and also the "I feel > free" 12 inch (b side "There's a dog") Hmm, there's a store here in Seattle (Soundwaves in Burien actually) which tends to carry more than the usual amount of Level 42 -- I bought mine there and they said that they pretty much always carry at least one copy of that. This is the one with Mark holding his chin with half of his face in the light, and half in a purplish-darkness. > [Carl, you're the only other person I've ever heard of (besides me) that's > got the US release of Influences with that cover! Anyone else here have > one?!?! -Eric] I don't, but a friend of mine (who was the person that told me that he had a solo album) does, so I guess that'd make three. Lolita--your copy is not the one with the "It's Over" cover--I didn't particularly like that cover anyway. > What bothers me about that song is not the congas, but that opening > synthesized horn line which brings to mind Asia's "Only Time Will > Tell" and Europe's "The Final Countdown." I'm really scared that you can even remember who Europe is. I never noticed the congas before, but I think they're nifty--they don't bother me at all. > I was wondering if someone agree with me that the songs written > by Mike are particulary great. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that I prefer his songs, but I'm definatly very fond of his music. Do you have a copy of his solo album? If not, I'd suggest running to your nearest web browser and order a copy from one of the online dealers (or Audiophile Imports if you want to throw away good money--that's where I got mine ). > my copy has him in Levi jacket and white > pants crouched near the base of a tree as he looks wistfully into the great > American West. Guess you haven't seen the "It's Over" video then 'cause this is a shot right outta that. > "Who's got a nice baloon there?" I always thought he said "Boon's got a nice balloon there" but then I haven't watched this in a long time, but I dubbed it onto cassette and have listened to it in the car alot, so I don't remember if Boon was anywhere even near a balloon at this point or not! I think i played it (yes, with my bass- alembic) 5000 times. Everybody is right about the stanley clark tunes. Its funny , i noticed it years ago, but couldn't find anybody to share my enthusiasm. There's a lot of strange things with the song Hours by the Window. In the end of the song it sounds like the technician is falling asleep and pushes the volume-knob of the lead vocal; " i couldn't KNEEL TO PLEASE THE GOD etc" this is a big remix mistake. I think you only hear it on CD not on vinyl. About the conga's on HIMH. I tried to rebuild the drumtrack on my home-sequencer. The conga's always annoyed me, but then i learned that they give the track a certain tension and drive (because the rest of the drum track is quite straigtforward). In one of the previous digests i asked if anyone of you guys and girls has any knowledge of a track called 'pop against racism' a benefit thing where Mark is singing (i think it was british- mid 80 ties).
