End of story!!! ------------------------------ Subject: World Machine vs. SATS From: LVL42 @ aol.com Date: Sat, 29 Jun 1996 12:11:32 -0400 >So, here are my favourite Level 42 albums in order of preference; > >Running In The Family >Forever Now (Resurgence) >World Machine >Staring At The Sun I would agree with most of your commentary, with a slight exception: I would consider switching the positions of RITF and WM - I prefer WM. But overall, it really is difficult to rank these albums as arguements could be made for each. I do think that SATS is underrated by most. I listened to it a few times recently and found that although most of the songs have the same "feel" to them, none are hard on the ear. In fact, I found myself choosing to hear SATS over FN - but maybe that's because I've played FN constantly for the past few months. Regardless of rank order, I'm thankful for such a talented group that has produced such varied music, all great, and can appeal to such a varied audience. Some respect L42 for their technical ability and some for the great melodies. Either way, I've turned a lot of different people on to them, all with differing tastes in music. The incredible thing is that they all could find some track or CD that appealed to them. How rare to find a band that can be successful in different arenas. Just an opinion...... lvl World Machine ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Nik Kershaw + Mahavishnu From: "Carl Mueller" Organization: none Date: Sat, 29 Jun 1996 17:41:22 -0800 Me again, alright, mister "ptoyer", Nik Kershaw's album "the Riddle" has a (really good) song called "easy" on which Mark plays. Let me know if you can't find it. mister Nigel, check out "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" for some awesome Mahavishnu (especially Michael Walden's drums on "Eternity's breath pt. 1) mister mighty maomoondog (he jochie!), if you like Mick Karn check out some Japan stuff. (Meel me als je wat Hollands wil auwehoeren). mister Pat Flanagan, I stand corrected. Shame on me for forgetting to mention Mark's awesome twangy guitar work on My father's shoes. Does anyone beside me, have the 2nd cd single with the interview on it? By the way, I mailed the '81 show, '91 show and Namm show to John V. and the ol' Winman. Let me know what you guys think. I'm pretty sure the word will get out and all these "me too!!!" messages will start poppin' up ;-] There's more by the way..... Ok, I'll be gone for the week (little trip to Red Rocks, CO, to see Blues Traveler) so have fun and see you in a while. Anyway, I'm waiting for Matt's blanks to arrive in the mail, then I can start whipping these little platters 'o' ear candy off. Have faith, it will be soon. I used to wear >my headphones, hear the sound and yell "WHAT?!" at my Mom wherever she was. > >Anyone else notice strange little things like that in their songs? The worst thing, which always catches me out when I'm driving, is songs where someone drops in a sample from a police siren unexpectedly (not L42 especially). The number of times I've slowed down and started peering in my mirrors trying to work out where the police car is, only to sheepishly realise it was on the tape in my car stereo... There's also a track on Duran Duran's album 'Rio' which at one point has a girl's voice in the background, crying out what sounds exactly like "Neil... Neil!". It sounds just like one of my sisters and used to really unnerve me. Ahh, I agree with you on that assessment, except that the horns aren't synthesized. (Not to my knowledge anyway.) The credits list Steve Sidwell on Horns and Krys Mach on Sax, so I assume they're actually playing that part as it was also done live (see John Thirkell and Gary Barnacle on Guaranteed Live). Well, even us gods make mistakes. My code was shcrewed up and nobody could see the images. It's fixed now, please stop by, thank you thank you. Some of you may be horrified by that, so I'll add that I'm equally horrified that Mark's favorite is Take Care of Yourself (the opening of that song makes me cringe, even though I know he is being funny). 2) Speaking of Children Say, Winston finally got our Live At Wembley CDs on Friday. The pictures are cool, but I'm a little disappointed in the recording. The editing totally sucks - the songs that are obviously omitted should have been included. This may have been worth making a double CD out of, which they obviously should have done with A Physical Presence. Why not? Most likely the people purchasing this will be existing fans, who would be willing to shell out a few extra bucks for a new release by them anyway. Overall I like Guaranteed Live better; too bad there is no CD of that :-(. 3) Eric - the five people I know who own this CD _only_ have the It's Over cover. Daniel James is picking one up for me in Seattle, and I would bet money that is the cover he found. Is that true Daniel? What does the original cover actually look like; anyone? 4) The Chant Will Never End is hilarious! That's a good one! (I obviously don't care for that song either). 5) I think the Song of the Week idea that someone put forth last week is excellent. For the first one I propose....The Chinese Way! JUST KIDDING!! Seriously, I propose True Believers. Comments? 6) Anyone who likes bassists, go get MeShell Ndegeocello's new album, Peace Beyond Passion. She has great basslines in there, and the songs are slammin. Check it out. From: "Lazlo Nibble" Date: Sun, 30 Jun 1996 14:41:56 -0600 (MDT) > 7) Does anyone know anything about a musician named William Orbit? Yes -- there's a full discography available from my web pages; email me if you have any specific questions. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo @ swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------ Subject: Allan Holdsworth From: ben @ flump.netkonect.co.uk (Benedict Poole) Date: Sun, 30 Jun 1996 23:20:08 +0000 Hi all Well, I *saw* AH play with the chaps @ the Hammersmith Odeon gigs, just before Guaranteed came out, and he was good - very laid-back, didn't screech over everything - just cool. I think the guitar part to 'With a Little Love' is one of the finest guitar lines EVER, and is played with almost overwhelming feeling. Send shivers down my spine every time, on what is one of the best songs on the album. This is AH at his best. Moving to the album itself, I find that the title tracks to both Guaranteed & FN I don't care for - too 'predictable,' they kind of epitomise all that is bad in L42 to those not au fait with the band (I've researched this with non-Levelhead friends). BUT the albums themselves (especially FN I think) are excellent. Weird. BTW, on another issue, if you don't much like Gary Husband's style, check out his drumming on 'At This Great Distance' - excellent stuff, and not too 'busy,' a very different side of his musical personality IMHO. (Thanks to Mark Hughes). I am surprised that no one has really commented on this in greater detail. Some real neat Bass work, interesting interviews mainly with Mark, views of Joe Daflo's, Mark's house etc. (seems like there might be some money to be made in this "pop music" game !) However the main thing that stood out for me was the backing tracks used whilst Mark is being interviewed. Assuming these are some of the tracks from the now cancelled solo album, they sounded BRILLIANT. Two tracks were kind of early LVL42 instrumentals but updated with all the professional polish of the later 42 stuff. The other track was a very "aggressive" uptempo Funk/Rock number Kinda "All over you" meets Metalica. IMHO. If this is representative of the Solo Album I can not understand why Mark is going back to the drawing board. Anyway, I know the vast majority of us would die to listen to this stuff ( well may be not actually die...) so let's get a battle plan together and see if we can get hold of this "Holy Grail" Any one else out there have any views on the programme ?? You've just experienced the Cybersensational Smith ! "Now the Time has come to show you how I feel....."
